The key theme of madness in Hamlet serves the critical roles of the play, serving to depict the chaos and turbulence reigning through the lives of all within the play. Characters portraying both feigned and authentic madness, such as Hamlet and Ophelia, serve pertinent roles displaying the corruption and destruction of the mind when left alone without a guiding figure, most significantly one in the role of a father, and restrained without a chance to speak freely. Shakespeare creates a definitive line between the sane and mad characters within the play, both in dialogue and presence in many scenes. In the dialogue of both Hamlet and Ophelia in the apex of their madness, as Yi-Chi Chen states in his Pregnant with Madness-Ophelia’s Struggle and Madness in Hamlet, “Other than being pregnant in madness, Hamlet’s and Ophelia’s language is also pregnant with madness (Chen 14.)” Through this remark, Chen states that not only is their language sprinkled with puns and dark humor that reflects a meaning underneath a cover of meaningless remarks, their remarks serve to bring about, “the truth that lies beneath the masquerade-like court of Denmark,” each in their own ways (Chen 14.) Hamlet, with his incense towards the marriage between Claudius and Gertrude, serves to utter his disregard towards this relationship in his biting remarks towards both parties. Ophelia, in her utter dismay at the rejection of her love by Hamlet and her father’s death, serves to facilitate her thoughts through the use of madness, speaking her mind clearly on her thoughts on Hamlet’s exploitation of the mind of women, showcasing her sorrow and heavy burden. While the sane merely remain aloof to the sorrows at hand, the mad seek to reflect them in their true light through backwards remarks and sly words. Most significantly, this dividing line between the sane and mad is first seen in the character of Hamlet. Throughout the play, one of Hamlet’s key struggles remains to be his inability to express his desire to rise to action in the name of his father, Old Hamlet, who spurs him to honor his name through revenge.
