Major Problems In Hamlet

Throughout the course of Shakespeare’s play, Hamlet, Hamlet is encompassed by a sea of troubles. His father’s death and reign of King Claudius manifest into Hamlet’s first major problem he has to face. Another problem Hamlet encounters is his relationship towards Ophelia and Gertrude. His third major problem is who can Hamlet trust in such a corrupt world that is full of sinners. Hamlet deals with his problems by doing the following: putting off murdering Claudius, taking his anger out on the women in his life, and confiding in Horatio. First off, Hamlet’s problem starting off in the play is the death of his father and his uncle, Claudius, replacing Old King Hamlet. Claudius has assumed the throne by marrying Gertrude, and Hamlet starts to get suspicious of Claudius after being coerced by the Ghost of King Hamlet. Hamlet starts to develop a plan to find out if the Ghost can be trusted and if Claudius committed killed King Hamlet. Hamlet says, “I’ll observe his looks. I’ll tent him to the quick. If he but blench. I know my course….The play’s the thing Wherein I’ll catch the conscience of the king” (2.2.599–601,606–07). The play within the play is Hamlet’s great masterful plan to cause Claudius’ guilt to be proof of him committing murder. Hamlet’s procrastination in eradicating his problem with Claudius is highlighted during his encounter with Fortinbras. Hamlet maintains, “When honour’s at the stake.
