The slogan “ Make America Great Again” has been impacting the United States over the past few years causing controversies across America. Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, that started in 2015, promised to “Make America Great Again”. I originally believed that the late 1990s and early 2000s were the greatest time in America. Now that I have learned more about Americas history, I know believe that 1980s were the greatest time in America's history. My definition of greatness did not change, I still believe it means to be superior to those around you and being able to achieve your goals. The economic, politics, and social all thrived during this time. When President Reagan became president in 1981, he introduced Reaganomics. The economic
In Langston Hughes poem “Let America be America Again” he talks about how America should return to the way that it was perceived to be in the dreams before America was truly America. Throughout the poem he uses various methods to evoke the patriotic images and dreams that he feels America should and will eventually be. Hughes states that America is supposed to be a place of equality for everyone including both white and colored people. During this period in time though there was not equality for everyone. Hughes talks about an America where both whites and colored people will have equality in all aspects socially, politically, and economically. What Hughes is saying is that both whites and colored
Trump uses the word “great” to push the idea of American exceptionalism. This provides a newly embraced sense of pride and patriotism that the audience had not felt since. Trump then uses the word “again” to suggest looking backward towards past eras for models that will move America forward to meet the unprecedented demographic, technological, climatological and ethical challenges faced with today. Although his campaign does not specify the details of what era was ‘great’, this appeals to older generations that be post WWII to either the early seventies or early eighties, when middle class incomes rose in lockstep with the wealthy- when one was proud to call themselves American. The word “again” also instills fear in the audience. It implies that America is currently not ‘great’, and changes need to be made. Trump then takes advantage of the nation’s fear. He positions himself as the nation’s hero - the only one who can secure borders, fight off terrorists, and install that ‘greatness’ once again. He boasts himself up as this hero, making his greatness America’s greatness as well. This slogan helps promote Trump as a savior figure, earning his popularity among a scared
Kevin Van Valkenburg’s multiple articles on New England Patriots’ quarterback Tom Brady are unique due to how they humanize a polarizing star. Ever since his breakout 2001 season, where the Patriots defeated the St. Louis Rams in Super Bowl XXXVI, Brady has adhered to the policy of the “Patriot Way,” where players under head coach Bill Belichick and owner Robert Kraft reveal next to nothing to the media and the public eye.
Despite the state of the situation, Americans have developed a unique sense of identity and we can always seem to be optimistic we can benefit change. Whether we create change, follow change, or need change, this identity which brings it about represents all the people, and serves the good of all. The ability to reform, adapt, and recover as an American is unmatched. This theme of a developing identity continues to develop up to modern day and will never stop evolving. With new challenges arising on the horizon, it is our responsibility as the people to never forget our history, as it defines our identity, destiny, and most importantly, what it means to be
“We're not, as some would have us believe, doomed to an inevitable decline. I do not believe in a fate that will fall on us no matter what we do. I do believe in a fate that will fall on us if we do nothing. So, with all the creative energy at our command, let us begin an era of national renewal. Let us renew our determination, our courage, and our strength. And let us renew our faith and our hope.” –Ronald Reagan, First Inaugural Address
Most U.S citizen views America as a country spiraling out of control. There is a sense of fear and prevailing doom as the country faces serious issues such as a growing debt and uncontrolled spending. In the article, “America remains the world's beacon of success, Tim Roemer begs to differ otherwise. Roemer points out that America has a lot going for it, for example,” The United States has the largest and most technologically powerful economy in the world. It is a country full of accomplishments, hope and worth fighting for. This is why America is admired by many and attracts immigrants from all around the world.
“Make America Great Again” implies that 1) America was once a great country that one should be proud of 2) America is no longer “great” nor a country to be proud of 3) America has lost its “great” status due to the changes policy makers have introduced under the Democratic party (specifically Obama) and 4) Supporting Trump will return America to its former glory.
My family has always believed that there is a path set by God for everybody in this world. Personally, I am very religious just like my family. I go to church every weekend and assist with anything for the church. Still, I never believed in the concept that everything is interconnected and happens for a reason. Well, that is, until now.
While reading this article it was brought to my attention that President Trump slogan “Make America Great Again” is not clearly defined. Questions and answers were discussed on the context of this message. “How can greatness be summed up, what characteristic or people are we aiming to please while making America great again and will make America great again and what area will determine America’s greatness” are questions that led to the topic of the discussion. President Trump’s campaign slogan has contributed to people of minority feeling uneasy due to evoking rights to help the majority and well-liked America (Republicans). The article addressed inequalities experienced by “black” people and how the “black” population will react to Trump making
In American history, many events have changed the country; in spite of wars, attacks, and disasters; people still have hope for a bright future.
Written in the first half of the 20th century, “Let America Be America” is a poem that documents and responds to the oppressed state of the United States, in both the past and present. The poem is a plea for a return to the original principles of freedom that our country has seemingly forgotten. Additionally, the speaker sees America as the broken home to oppressed people who have lost sight of the ultimate goal of freedom and happiness. Although America is often perceived as the “land of the free,” Langston Hughes’s poem contradicts this ideology by not only painting a vivid picture of oppression in America but also by providing a desperate hope for the future.
“Make America Great Again” has been plastered across America on television broadcasts, billboards, hats, T-shirts, and other profitable items. This slogan was used not only by Donald Trump, but Margolin (2016) wrote that Ronald Reagan similarly campaigned “Let’s Make America Great Again” in his 1980 race for the White House. The Framers of the Constitution would have agreed with the slogans that Trump and Reagan selected and would have truly supported the way these men have influenced one of the greatest countries in the world.
We live in a very messed up world. Sure, there may be a lot of groups in this world that have intentions of goodness, but those groups are often overpowered by those that intend the opposite. Many groups intend to enstill hate within whatever population is its target audience. A very key part of these groups is their ability to produce propaganda. In many cases, propaganda will persuay people to join their side of the argument. Propaganda is used in democracy as an attempt to control the masses, and while it's not around as much today as it used to be, it's still a very effective tool at doing so. Our current president has used propaganda somewhat to his advantage, even. The catchphrase "Make America Great Again" is one that will be remembered through the ages as a tool to convince the millions that he would
President Reagan quoted from French political thinker Alexis de Tocqueville that “America is great because America is good. And if America ever stops being good, America will stop being great.” Mr. Tocqueville may never have said this but whoever said this is absolutely right. Now that this great nation is under the threat of terrorism we need to show the world that United States is still a great.
For over a year now, I have heard the same slogan over and over, “Let’s Make America Great Again”. This has been the ongoing slogan for Trump throughout his campaign for president but I haven’t really seen anything that has been made great. Have you ever just stopped and looked around, and seen everything around you? Seeing people holding up signs at intersections, grocery stores, asking for help with food, gas or shelter. Have you seen the news lately talking about the weather, particularly the storms, employment rate and the crime rate? This is the main topic that I am going to talk about in my paper. We as a human race need to come together and work as one and stop all these problems that is going on. As a team, we would accomplish
