The shortfin mako shark, also known as Isurus oxyinchus was named in 1810 by Constantine Rafinesque. Its name, oxyrinchus can be translated from Greek by splitting the word into two segments, "oxy" meaning sharp and "rynchus" meaning nose. Isurus can be translated to equal tail referring to the shape of its tail fin. This species of shark is extremely hydrodynamic due to its “sharp” pointed snout, triangular dorsal fin, and large crescent-shaped tail fin. Its coloring consists of a darker metallic blue on the top and a silver/white underneath. The average size for this kind of shark is approximately 10 feet long and 300 pounds.
