“Today on my first day as an adult, on behalf of the world’s children, I demand of leaders we must invest in books instead of bullets.” This quote was said by Malala Yousafzai, a young woman who in her teenage years was an advocate for education and peace, and still continues to make a significant impact on the world. Malala and two other people, Easton LaChappelle and Louis Braille, are proof that teenagers can make a meaningful difference in this world. Malala Yousafzai was born July 12, 1997 in Mingora, Pakistan. Malala attended a school founded by her father that allowed girls to join. Even in her early years she became an advocate for girl’s education, and she in September 2008 even gave a speech condemning the Taliban’s attack on school girls. This is a very brave and daring thing to do; she spoke out against the Taliban. She inspired many people with her courage, and she continued her support for education. Because of her ongoing defiance of Taliban control and her passion for peace and education, in 2011, Malala got death threats from the Taliban. Then, on October 9, 2012, she was shot on the bus on her way home from school. She was shot in the left side of her head, and was left in critical condition. Teenagers are often seen as impulsive, easy to get in risky situations, and intellectually unstable. This is somewhat proven, “…the front cortex, the area of the brain that controls reasoning and helps us think before we act, develops later. This part of the brain is still changing and maturing well into adulthood.” So, teenagers are more likely to be bad decision makers.
