Mandating Paternity Leave

As the world is emerging, parental roles are experiencing a shift. It is very common to have professional companies and organizations offer mothers paid time off. Typically, this maternity leave is at least six weeks. New fathers, however, don’t often get this same luxury, which is unfortunate. In order for a father to better support the mother of their child and/or personally care for their child, a father should be granted paid paternity leave. Many argue that not mandating paternity leave is serving men and their careers far better than if the policy were to be established. With this, it may result in layoffs because companies would have to fill the financial gap that comes with paying non-working employees, on a paternity leave. Men present can be a great deal of physical and emotional support towards women after birth. About women experience postpartum depression, which is a type of depression that follows childbirth and can be triggered from hormonal changes, fatigue, and mental adjustments to motherhood(Séjourné). Mothers often need the support of their spouse during that time, because it can lead and help mothers or co-parents in their well-being for an easier transition into motherhood. A woman's body goes through a lot right after childbirth both emotionally and physically(Séjourné). Women begin adjusting to the new roles, the new bodies, and the new schedules. So, having their partners around comforts them and helps them feel abler. Having fathers around can also help the stress of the woman because she doesn’t feel overwhelmed with doing everything on her own and can take care of herself while the father takes care of the house and baby. It is not the presence of the father, which is important to take into account, but rather his participation in the care of the baby, so fathers need to be on a leave to participate in helping reduce the risk of postpartum
