In 2035, NASA astronaut Mark Watney, a botanist and mechanical engineer, has been left stuck on Mars after the crew of the Ares 3 mission were forced to evacuate from their Martian habitat (in Acidalia Planitia due to an intense dust storm with high winds. Watney was impaled by satellite dish during the evacuation and believed dead. His injury are minor, but with no way to contact Earth, Watney must rely on his own skills to survive. He begins a log of his experiences for those who might discover it long after his death. Watney begins growing potatoes in the crew's Martian habitat (or Hab) and burns hydrazine to make water. NASA discovers that he is alive when satellite images of the landing site show evidence of his activities; they begin working on ways to rescue him, but withhold the news of his survival from the rest of the Ares III crew, on their way back to Earth aboard the Hermes spacecraft, so as not to distract them. …show more content…
He receives instructions on the radical modifications to the MAV that are necessary to reduce its weight and allow it to intercept Hermes during its flyby. The modifications leave a large hole in the front of the MAV, which Watney is directed to cover with Hab canvas. During launch, the canvas patch tears, slowing the liftoff and leaving the MAV on a course too far from the Hermes for Watney to be rescued. Lewis develops a plan to intercept the MAV by firing Hermes' attitude thrusters, then speeding up to get closer to the MAV's velocity by rotating Hermes so that it is flying backwards and blowing a hole in the front airlock with an improvised sugar-and-liquid-oxygen bomb. Beck, the Hermes' EVA specialist, uses a Manned Maneuvering Unit on a tether to reach Watney aboard the MAV and carry him back to Hermes. In a final log entry, Watney expresses his joy at being rescued, reflecting on the human instinct to help those in

The date was December 13, 2016. We had a game in West Dubuque. We lost that game by 10 points. It was a bad loss and a game that we should have won. After the game a player on my team was in the locker room. The varsity guys were in there too. By this time I had left with my parents and heard about what happened in the locker room a couple days later. The varsity guys put a couple of Western Dubuque women's practice jerseys in the freshman's bag. Later to be found by him. Instead of going to the School and turning them in. He decided to keep them and hide them in a sliding drawer. His parents found them and confronted him about them. They made him turn them in. When he told the story to the Athletic Director he refused to

Towards the end of the 1930s, the United States government was preparing itself to progress from one despondency to another. Because the Great Depression was nearing its final months and the threat of becoming involved in the European war continuously intensified, it was decided that substantial amounts of energy, along with an ascending budget, was to be focused on developing military boats that could haul soldiers from ships to open beaches. In New Orleans, Andrew Jackson Higgins was known for manufacturing Eureka Boats, or shallow-watercrafts that assisted in the exploration of oil and gas throughout the Louisiana bayous. After many failed attempts Higgins was able to adapt his design

The ending of a novel can be evaluated by the reader in several different ways, however to properly analyze the work is to further explore the logic of how everything has come to be. The ability of the author to show the reader that the ending is reasonable from the preceding action and the character’s nature is what should truly be examined. Not only is the ending of The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz both happy and unhappy, it is logical in the sense that it follows logically from the climax of the novel all while the character’s have been constant throughout, except Oscar. Oscar, the protagonist experiences a life-changing transformation that leads to his untimely death. However, the ending is convincing because of this

Waking up in the morning, going to sleep at night, and doing what one loves in between, is what success means. That, to me, encompasses being able to help people and possibly save lives as a career. There is a nobility in succeeding in certain areas one cares deeply about. Having the ability and capability to protect and serve is a strong desire within me. Developing my education, in order to further my success something that I perceive as a crucial aspect of being able to do what I love. Attending Endicott is the first step in this journey of mine.
Wampum is traditionally beaded strings and belts which were and are used as mnemonic devices to recount historical events and agreements (Fadden & Thomas, 2006). Throughout my research a common misconception was addressed that the Haudenosaunee did not use wampum as currency, as monetary value was not established prior to contact. Though it was valued, as it was recognized to take a considerable amount of effort to make said belts (Fadden, 2015) Making wampum a key component in initiating, establishing, symbolising and recording different types of relationships between Nations. Accordingly, it is used across many different people including Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee (Ojiig, 2015). Each nation has its own belts and teachings, for this paper we will be focusing on the Haudenosaunee teachings and traditions surrounding wampum. They can all be described as a “Cultural tape recorder” (Hill, 2016), as they capture the essence of a story and make it easier for the story to be told when the belt is there as a physical reminder. People who kept the knowledge of the

Introduction: Throughout the book of Into The Wild Chris McCandless is known to be a wacko reckless idiot, and is also known to be courageous and heroic. However does a courageous person go out into the wilderness knowing that the outcome will be fatal? People viewed him from different perspectives and also have broad range of opinions of this young man. Some deemed him to be incredibly dim-witted or a man that simply just followed his heart. Evidence shows that Chris McCandless is actually a mix of both. The first opinion that described McCandless was brainless, idiotic, and extremely foolish. Many passages from Into The Wild can support this outlook.
