The main character, Mark Watney, is the lowest ranking member aboard the Ares 3 mission crew. Mark is both a botanist and a mechanical engineer and puts his skills to work quite often throughout his time on Mars. When Mark and his crew were in the process of evacuating Mars, Mark was hit by debris and was presumed dead and left on Mars. Mark makes the best of his time on Mars with documenting his days with a log. In his logs he uses a lot of sarcasm and humor. Mark expresses his dislike with crude language especially with disco music as it is the only music that is with him. Mark is a headstrong stubborn character that could be considered a risk taker. This is especially evident in when taking apart equipment against the advice of NASA such …show more content…
They are labelled as sols and count up since Mark has landed on Mars. The novel is mostly set up from the perspective of Mark in the past tense as he is writing about his day with the events happening earlier in the day for example when talking about a conversation “I told NASA what I did. Our (paraphrased) conversation was: Me: “I took it apart, found the problem, and fixed it.” NASA: “Dick.”. The book also has a third person point of view put into play when the perspective changes to look at events happening on earth this is evident when NASA is worried about Mark’s mental health “He’s stuck out there. He thinks he’s totally alone and that we all gave up on him. What kind of effect does that have on a man’s psychology?” He turned back to Venkat. “I wonder what he’s thinking right now.” the switching of the perspectives gives the novel more of a modern feel to it. The overall tone of the Martian is humorous and sarcastic and can be seen by both NASA and Mark in multiple parts of the novel. At NASA discussing Mark’s progress a worker said “'I remember when you were shy.'” to which was followed up with “'I'm space paparazzi now. The attitude comes with the job.”. Mark is also very sarcastic and humorous especially when talking about various objects such as duct tape “Yes, of course duct tape works in a near-vacuum. Duct tape works anywhere. Duct tape is magic and should be worshiped.”. The mood of the story is pretty suspenseful as many things go wrong in trying to rescue Mark, and Mark’s expeditions across Mars. Despite all the bad things happening it is miraculous that Mark even keeps his positive outlook on life on Mars as he said “I guess you could call it a "failure", but I prefer the term "learning experience".” which is very surprising considering everything he has been
A major turning point in the authors’ life was when he attended Gallaudet University. At Gallaudet, he was surrounded by deaf peers and signing professors. To him, this was unbelievable. He was no longer behind from interpreters relaying information after it had already been said. Mark expresses this emotional state by saying he is no longer “living in a fishbowl anymore” (pg. 111). At one point earlier in the book, Mark compares himself to someone born underwater having to live in a glass bubble; someone who is unfortunately an outcast from the rest. But with the help of special scuba diving gear, you had the ability to interact and swim with the other fish. Although the scuba gear was accommodating in many ways, it was “heavy and uncomfortable, and as much as it helped you interact with the fish, you never were able to swim like them” (Pg. 44). In order to find out who he
Tension, humor, and foreshadowing are some examples of elements that readers will find in The Martian. In The Martian, astronaut Mark Watney is left behind on Mars. Because of a dust storm, Mark's teammates believe that he is dead and left him behind. The Martian is a science fiction book that gives readers an idea of how people might be able to colonize Mars and gives readers an idea of what space is like. The Martian has an author that self-published his book, and who used humor and foreshadowing to keep his readers engaged.
The movie, “The Martian,” by Ridley Scott is about an astronaut who’s trying to survive on an empty and lonely planet. The astronaut surviving on the planet Matt Damon, also known as Mark Watney. After his crew left him because they thought he was dead during a strong storm, Mark finds himself abandoned and lonely on a desolate planet. Mark try’s to send a message back to earth that he is still alive on the empty planet. NASA puts in non-stop work and fights to bring him back home. In the end, he returns back to Earth safely.
The Martian Chronicles, by Ray Bradbury, is a science-fiction book and was written in 1946. This major work by Bradbury is a collection of short stories relating to Mars or Martians. Bradbury had a clear vision of the Mars in which these stories are set. His vision was one of a fantasy world from the Martians point of view. In this work, the humans from Earth are the aliens from outer space. Bradbury has won many awards including the O. Henry Memorial Award, the Benjamin Franklin Award, the Aviation-Space Writers Association Award, the World Fantasy Award for lifetime achievement, and the Grand Master Award from the Science Fiction Writers of America. Bradbury supported his awards
In Alison Sargent's article, Life on Mars (Hill), she explains how faith and feminism do not easily coexist within a community in Seattle. There is a church known as "Mars Hill Church" in a city full of hipsters, and it is "…one of the hippest, fastest-growing, and most conservative evangelical churches in the nation" (Sargent). The founder of the church is Mark Driscoll, who is also the main pastor. In this church, there is a mixture of pop culture and a strict ideal set, regarding the Calvinist doctrine. This makes for a conservative Christian church with some contemporary and liberal values (Sargent). These liberal values are often "hip", for example the church might have religious services in a coffee shop, or they will have graffiti art
In 1940 a black man was lynched by whites for not addressing a white man as “sir”. In 1942 President Roosevelt sent Japanese-Americans away to camps because of racial prejudice from whites. In 1943 white mobs went around beating Latinos in America. In 1950 Ray Bradbury wrote Martian Chronicles, a book where humans migrate to Mars with no warm welcome from martians. Bradbury wrote his novel during the 1940’s a time where racism was no stranger. Racial injustice was happening left and right in America, which seemed to have influenced his writing. In The Martian Chronicles humans went to Mars to explore it. Eventually they found out that Mars was suitable for human life and began to colonize it. When humans first came many of the Martians were uncomfortable around humans. As the story goes on Martians start to take negative action towards the humans since they aren’t of the same kind. Martians and humans had a horrible relationship to start with but over time it improved vastly, just like white people with people of color in the US. White people were the martians while people of color are the humans except white people colonized POC land not vice versa. Ever since America was founded time and time again POC have been used and abused, which could have been the inspiration for the novel. Bradbury wrote the Martian Chronicles during the 1940’s; a time when African Americans were lynched, Japanese American citizens were sent away to camps, and
Although being stuck on Mars seems like a far-fetched idea to most of us, that is exactly what happened to Mark Watney in Andy Weir’s latest science fiction novel, The Martian. Six days after he arrived on the planet on a scheduled NASA mission, the crew experiences a catastrophic dust storm and leave the planet headed towards Earth. One kind of very big problem, they leave him behind. The novel discusses about his survival on Mars for years until a controversial decision by his crew may allow him to be saved. This book will keep on the edge of your seat and we keep you begging for more.

NASA has been trying to survive on Mars for years, but in this novel, they already have. The Martian is a science fiction novel about Mark Watney, a botanist for NASA, is involved in a mission to Mars, until one day he is left behind on Mars with limited supplies. Watney has to persevere through several challenges to get back home, and try not to die in the process. The Martian is a very suspenseful book written by the interesting author, Andy Weir, who uses humor to counter the drama.
The beginning of this book starts with Mark Watney a mechanical engineer and botanist describing his current situation, how mars missions work and how he managed to get into his predicament of being stranded on mars alone. For some of the basics, he is on Aries 3 the third mission that has sent humans to mars. All of the use a really big ship to get there and back and by the time they get to mars 13 pre supply missions will have sent everything they will need onto the Martian ground.
The rest of Mark’s crew assumed he was dead based on readings from his space suit, so they had no choice but to leave him. Mark knows everyone has given up on him, but continues to try to keep himself alive. What he does not know, is that NASA was able to see him on the satellites and is exhausting all their resources to bring him home safely. At one time or another everyone feels completely alone and forgotten about, when in reality they have family and friends who will do anything they can to help, they just do not see
- I liked how the author gives a close and detailed description of what the Martians look like. - Why do most of the characters not have names? - The Martians were grey. Their color might be a symbol of sadness and despair. - When the Martians kill their first victim, the sunsets and a period of darkness follows.

The Martian Novel should end with Watney being rescued by the NASA team. As he gets on the Hermes, he decides to bring his potatoes back to Earth to observe. The astronaut team was thrilled to have Watney back and they all celebrated the successful mission. As the celebration continues Commander Lewis notices that the Hermes is gradually declining in altitude towards Pluto. She then quickly yells for the others to come look at what was going on. Despite the efforts to prevent crashing, the mission to bring Watney back was unsuccessful. The entire team was stranded on Pluto and terrified of what was to come. Unfortunately, Watney had not survived the crash and his dead body lied on the cold ground. The team only has the potatoes that Watney
In 2035, the crew of the Ares III mission to Mars is exploring Acidalia Planitia on Martian solar day (sol) 18 of their 31-sol expedition. A strong dust storm threatens to topple their Mars Ascent Vehicle (MAV), forcing them to abort their mission. During the evacuation, astronaut Mark Watney is struck by debris and lost in the storm; the last telemetry from his suit indicates no signs of life. With Watney believed dead, and the storm worsening by the second, mission commander Melissa Lewis orders the crew to take off and return to their orbiting vessel, Hermes.
