Then, a year later, in 1940, when the Sharps accepted the offer to return to Europe again, they would face the dangers that they had previously evaded. Once more, they left their comfortable and privileged life in Massachusetts and left their two children behind.(Source C; pg. 1) Unluckily, it was too hazardous to operate in Paris, because it had fallen to the Nazis and France was half occupied. Consequently, the Sharps ended up operating in Lisbon and Marseille, where the areas were safer. (Source B; pg.1) One of the perilous choices they made was freeing a renowned, German, Jewish author, named Lion Feuchtwanger escape. Feuchtwanger was on the Nazi’s “most wanted” list, making it unsafe to help him. In order to smuggle him, Martha Sharp had …show more content…
Their role in the Holocaust played an important part in not only saving lives, but inspiring others to be upstanders and take action for what is right. After learning about the Sharps, they showed me how to be an upstander and how I can provide support for the lesser community. Also, they showed me that any normal girl or boy can do anything, as long as they try, work hard, and have the desire to accomplish their goal. Most importantly, everyone can learn to show integrity and do the right thing, even when no-one is watching. With all the bullying around me, I should make an effort to change how I react, rather than being a silent witness. By being an upstander at school and at home, it will lead me to have virtuous morals and always be kind and helpful to others. Any of the choices I make will eventually impact someone and inspire my peers to make a difference. As for the Sharps, The powerful and courageous sacrifices they took is what defines them as upstanders. Not everyone can risk their life to go to war-torn Europe and save the lives of others, but Martha and Waitstill Sharp’s legacy prove that all future generations are capable of being as courageous and noble as they
As the movement to break ties with Britain continued in the colonies, loyalists spoke up and made it clear that they opposed independence. Anglican minister Charles Inglis cautioned that declaring independence from Great Britain, with its powerful military, would do nothing but cause bloodshed (Doc A). He wrote that because the British outnumbered the colonists in war with their immensely strong army, there would be “ruthless war, with all its aggravated horrors.” Inglis’s views on independence also were influenced by his role as a member of the Church of England, and therefore his loyalty to the country. A writer from Pennsylvania anonymously shared his stance on the act, showing how their country’s growth was due the protection and security
After 1815, a women’s status in society was shaped both by the “market revolution” and the “Second Great Awakening”. The “market revolution” was a drastic change in the nation's economy through transportation, education, legal reforms. Examples of these reforms would include the creation of canals, roads, railroads, and the technology needed to commute between places, an increase in teacher wages, school terms, and curriculum, and the spreading awareness of massive movements such as the temperance, abolitionist, and prison reform movement. The “Second Great Awakening” was a revival of religious spirit that attracted social minorities, such as women, African-Americans,and native Americans, that produced many new sects of Protestantism, such
During the 1790 the country was split up over the rise of political parties. There were the federalists led by alexander hamilton and the democratic-republicans led by Alexander Hamilton and the democratic republicans led by tomas jefferson. The federalists and democratic-republicans have different views on many things, including the interpretation of the constitution, strong parts of the nation's economy and if the alien and sedition acts were important to have in our country.
What if you were in a country where you were forced to overpay on everyday items, but were not able to change this in any way? If you would feel angry, and frustrated, then you would have sympathized with the American colonists in the mid 1700s. America had grown tired of being taxed relentlessly because of the heavy payment of the French and Indian War. One-sided acts and laws such as the Intolerable Acts and the Stamp Act treated the colonists unfairly. Thoughts drifted toward rebellion, and the people were empowered by acts of defiance against the British. The Boston Tea party and the speech by Patrick Henry made the Brits pass more laws and acts, causing an uproar in the colonies. Many unreasonable laws and acts of defiance led the country
It is the middle of the in 1778, there are men everywhere, cots full of ill soldiers, and smoke filled huts. Half of the population is sick and the soldiers have almost no fight left in them. There are few men with spirit left in the camps at Valley Forge. Thomas Paine states, “These are the times that try men's souls”, and as the men walk around injured, bleeding, frozen, and starving you do not only see hunger and pain, you would see what looked like poverty. Tattered clothing draped on the backs of the worn out soldiers, and starved, skeleton resembling bodies. Even though these harsh times will show the true colors of man, some are boasting with the red, white, and blue of patriotism. While innumerable people believe that there is almost no fight or spirit left, the soldiers that stay have hope to win this war. If I was a soldier at Valley Forge, I would stay. I would continue to
Prompt: Evaluate how and why the antebellum market revolution and Second Great Awakening affected the evolution of women’s role in the family, workplace, and society in the years 1815 - 1860.
As James Monroe was elected president, the Era of Good Feelings began and was characterized by cultural and economic nationalism. As a result of the War of 1812, the U.S. created a protective tariff in 1816 to prevent British goods from taking away American business. Protective tariffs were a part of Henry Clay’s American System which also included a national bank and internal improvements, however the plan was halted when the Panic of 1819 occurred; an economic disaster in which unemployment, banks closing, and debt increased. Monroe was a Democratic-Republican president but the Supreme Court was lead by Federalist chief justice John Marshall whose decisions consistently favored a
In 1763, the British and the colonists emerged victorious from the Seven Years’ War after the signing of peace terms at Paris, granting Britain a colonial empire in North America and an end to control of North American lands by the French and groups of Native Americans. These similarities did not last long, however. On October 7, 1763, Parliament passed the Proclamation of 1763, prohibiting colonial settlement west of the Appalachian Mountains, a frontier which the colonists believed they could explore after defending and securing a New World empire. This angered the colonists, and their bitterness toward their mother country would become significantly stronger over the following twelve years leading up to the inception of war with Britain.
It is time for war with bullets flying pass you. Will you continue and try your hardest to win your country’s freedom or not. It’s the year of 1777 at George Washington’s winter camp, Valley Forge. I chose to re-enlist because of three reasons, the first reason is healthy men, like me are needed. I also need to think about others and help win this war, unlike others who don’t think about others. The Congress Committee is also finally starting to listen to us soldiers, they are doing their best to provide us food, like meat and some clothing. These are the three main reasons why I have chosen to stay.
Why would you fight the war for texas? The Kansas-Nebraska act replaced the Missouri compromise in 1854 after congress repealed the Missouri Compromise. The Repeal led to a mini war because the north Was not okay with the repeal. Why did Texans fight the civil war? Texans fought for the civil war, because they wanted to protect slavery, their love for Texas, and protect states rights.
There was more of an economic effect of the global flow of silver from 1570-1750 than socially. It greatly affected the trade world because China would only trade in return for silver. It also made South America a major part of the world trade system. The flow of silver caused inflation. Inflation happens when the price rises faster than the wages. Silver also widened the gap of class sizes in the Ming Dynasty.
The American colonists were justified in waging war and breaking away from Britain. In fact, they had every right to fight against the British. They were justified because of unjust laws and a parliament of tyranny.
George Washington and the rest of the soldiers need you at Valley Forge even though we all are suffering from illness. This all started on “December, the year of 1777”(Doc. A). That is when we had first arrived at Valley Forge and how all this have started. We are “not far from Philadelphia which is 18 miles away”. Will I quit and give up fighting? When I state the word ‘quit’, the correct meaning that is used in this situation is either you’re going not going to re-enlist after the time is up. There are both many valid reasons to re-enlist and not to. But, I have chosen to re-enlist. After all, us getting here in the first place is what we had signed up for. I did not come here to give up just yet.
Mansa Musa is one of the well known leaders as well as the richest person who ever lived but he practiced Islam. Because of this he needed to make his Hajj from Mali to Mecca. He also had other motives he wanted to do along the way.
It is true that non-elites are not wealthy and royal as people of higher social classes are. Yet, comparing these two documents, the non-elites lived a life of social mobility obtaining merit status, gaining freedom, and allowing inheritance. Observing the documents, the non-elites live a life that satisfies them. They have land that they can farm, own cattle’s and obtain servants in their own household. Although their status is not equal to those of the wealthy. Non-elites can move up the ladder by obtaining merit status. In the first document, Mentuhotep was an orphan who inherit fortune from his relative. He could build his own home and have kids of his own. Although it was rare and uncommon, it happened for Mentuhotep who was very fortunate. Looking at the sources for document one, Mentuhotep can afford someone who was literate and able to craft a Stela. As you observe the figures on the right, they were his servants.
