Introduction
Mass incarceration is a serious topic within out country. The main issue to be addressed in this paper is the mass incarceration and it’s effect on the individual, as well as their families and communities. The United States has the largest number of men and women behind bars than any other country. Also, because of the excessive incarceration rate, many prisons are over populated and lack resources and support to help the inmates.
This lack of service within the correctional institutions creates an increase possibility to reoffend, once released.

As stated in the beginning of this paper, I have always been aware of the “favoritism” in the justice system but this has help me develop a more logical understanding of it. I have also come to realize that my brother was apart of that favoritism because he is white. While writing this paper, I’ve experienced many emotions. Those emotions ranged from sadness to confusion to anger. The readings brought about many sad feelings because the mass incarceration and lack of resources from the system effects more than just the individual, the damage also has major effects on the families and communities of these men. It also made me think about my own child and how I would feel if she had to go without her father for an extended period of time, simply because the system is set up to make African American males fail. How do you explain to a child that their father has a longer sentence because of their skin color? It was heart breaking because children and families need these
