This poem does not have a set pattern, for example the first stanza has five line, the second, fourth, and six stanza has eight lines, the third stanza has two lines, the fifth stanza has seven line, the seventh stanza has four lines. The rhyme scheme is ABCBB, ABCBDEFG, AA, ABCDEFGF, ABCBDEFE, ABCD. This poem does not repeat and words or phrases.
In this poem it uses alliteration. Such as stanza 1 line 3 poison’ and preening. Stanza 2 line 5 buying and big. Another figurative language in this poem is imagery. In stanza one it says “some clichty folks dont know the facts poison’ and preening puttin’ on acts”. I think it's saying they trying to be like everyone also they being hippocrates.
The theme is to work all week and have fun on the weekend. Maya Angelou working hard all week then on the weekend she get all spruced up and laugh and dance. I think this poem shows happiness and relief. The reason why I said that is because as she works all week she finally feel relieved that she don't have to work until the next week. Also that she can hang with her friends on the weekend. It says I quote “folks write about me. They just can't see how I work all week at the factory. Then get spruced up and laugh and dance and turn away from worry with sassy
In this poem there is a lot of figurative language. One of the biggest types of figurative language used in this poem is irony. The irony in this poem is how the mother wouldn't let her child go to march because she feared her child would get hurt. Instead she sent her child to church because she believed it was a safe and sacred place but ironically the church ended up being bombed. Another piece of figurative language that is very effective in this poem is imagery. The way the poem is written helps me create images in my head for example, "She raced through the streets of Birmingham." I can imagine her running around desperately, looking for her child. The metaphors and hyperboles in this poem also help with the imagery, for example, "...night dark hair," and "…rose-petal sweet." These metaphors make me think of the girls smoothly combed black hair and her fresh and beautiful rosy smell. A hyperbole that had a huge effect on the tone was, "But that smile was the last smile to ever come upon her face." This hyperbole really helps me understand the effect of a tragic moment like this and how it can completely ruin

Louis. The man who assaulted her was her mother boyfriend, who was later found dead. He was “kicked to death” the same night of the incident (Bloom 3). The incident concluded with five years of silence for Maya (Eller, 2). Maya’s rape incident was compared to the suffering of the African American community in the South during the 1930’s and 1940’s. Edward Eller, an assistant professor of English at Northeast Louisiana University writes that; “Just as the child had to give in to her rapist because she has no choice but to endure and survive, the blacks had no choice” (Eller, 2). The fight for Maya to fulfill her American Dream of finding a home, and being accepted into American society goes hand in hand with the fight for civil rights for the African American society. Eller states that Angelou’s voice through her literature showed African Americans that they could overcome racism and segregation; “Because Angelou shows us we can do more than endure. We can Triumph” (Eller, 2). Young Angelou along with the blacks in the South were looking for a place to call home, together they searched for a place where they belonged, were they fit in.

When I first read this poem, I was overwhelmed with conflicting emotions. Maya Angelou depicts herself as a fighter that will never give up, no matter the circumstances. She has obviously faced some difficult situations in her life that should have stopped her but she continues to triumph in the face of adversity. In this way, I am inspired to continue pursuing my goals. I also felt discouraged and disgusted, mostly because of the types of obstacles that are described in this poem. It is symbolizes the obstacles that many African Americans faced in the past as a result of the abolition of slavery, racism and inequality. The discouraging part of this poem is that some of these very inequalities and injustices still go on today. So, while this poem illustrates strength,
