• Childhood: o Maya Angelou was born in St. Louis, Missouri. o During her childhood, she lived in Stamps, Arkansas with her grandmother and her brother. o Angelou was sexually assaulted by her mother's boyfriend when she was seven years old. o Angelou’s uncles killed him when they found out about the assault. Although she was the victim of a heinous crime, Maya Angelou felt responsible for his death and stopped talking. o She refused to speak for five years, but she began to love literature during that time period. She read renowned works by Charles Dickens and William Shakespeare as well as African-American authors such as W. E. B. DuBois and Langston Hughes. o When Maya Angelou was twelve years old she finally began speaking again.
• Adolescence: o Angelou went to George Washington High School in San Francisco. o She studied dance and drama at the California Labor School on a scholarship. o Angelou graduated high school at age seventeen and had a son who she named Guy.
• Early Adulthood: o Angelou married Tosh Angelos in 1950. o She studied dance in NYC after they separated. o Angelou heard Dr. Martin Luther King speak for the first time in the late 1950s. She then decided to join the African American fight for civil rights.
 She accepted a position as a coordinator for King's Southern Christian Leadership Council (SCLC). o Angelou and her son moved to Cairo
