In life there are many things we have to do even if we do not want to. We might do it to save somebody from an event that could hurt them very much. In the novel Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, George did not kill Lennie for his own benefit, but instead for Lennie’s, because now Lennie did not have to suffer the sadness, punishment he would receive from Curley, and fear he faced when he would accidently kill somebody. What George did was an example of mercy killing because he did it to protect Lennie from all the suffering he would eventually have to face if he had not killed him. Lennie and George moved to Soledad, California and left Weed because Lennie had been accused of rape. On page 42 George tells Slim, “So he reaches out to feel this red dress an’ the girl lets out a squawk, and he holds on’ cause that’s the only thing he can think to do,” explaining to him that Lennie only wanted to feel this soft red dress and did not mean to cause any harm. It’s done so that the person that is ill will not have to suffer any further and find relief and peacefulness after death. They get the option to end their life so that their suffering will end, but sometimes family members choose for them because sometimes they are too sick to decide for themselves. Many people do not agree on this type of death, they see it as a type of murder or immoral. In many other countries it is allowed while in the United States it is illegal because many people see it as a bad thing to do. Mercy killing should be allowed everywhere because people should have the right to decide on their life and not be prevented from it because somebody else sees it as a wrong thing. It stops the suffering they feel everyday of not being like everybody else or being in pain every day. Allowing euthanasia opens up hospital rooms to the people that need them and have a chance of
But if the other outcome is worse, you're obligated/called to do the right/more humane outcome. Most people would agree with this statement in almost every other situation, but when you substitute it into context here it's no different. Many people who have read the book agrees George and Lennie had a special connection/best friends and many say friends don't kill each other. When you take a deeper look at this statement it justifies even more why George did the right thing, and shouldn't get punished. Since they had a special connection, George cared for him so much that he knew the right thing to do is to let him go and die happily, peacefully, with no struggle. Also by someone who cares for him, then someone who hates him, no matter how much it would hurt himself to do it.
In Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck George kills his best friend Lennie. George’s reasoning for this is that Lennie is killing too many people and has become a burden. Lennie does not realize that he is doing wrong by accidentally killing animals and people. George says that he is doing this for other’s benefit when really he is doing this for his own good. This was wrong of George and he is guilty because even though Lennie was accidentally
How can someone save a life by taking a life? In John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men that question is answered by two unlikely friends. Lennie Small has a mental disability and can not tell right from wrong. George Milton takes care of Lennie willingly and tries to make sure no harm ever comes to Lennie. It is the 1930´s and the two travel around together on the search for job opportunities after running away from their hometown due to an accident involving Lennie. They end up finding work on a ranch but drama soon starts. To make a long story short Lennie accidentally killed Curley‘s, the boss’s son, wife which end up with a mob hunting Lennie down. Curley leads the mob hoping to cause Lennie to have an egregious death. George makes the decision to take Lennie’s life before Curley does to make sure Lennie dies fast and peacefully. There are people who believe George is in the position to be punished for what he did, but if they look at all the circumstances they would understand George‘s actions are condonable. George Milton is justified in the killing of Lennie Small because he saved Lennie from facing the wrath of Curely, he stopped Lennie from causing any more harm, and he acted selflessly.
Oftentimes, we must sacrifice the most important things in our lives for the greater good. This idea happens in John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men. In this novel, two migrant workers, Lennie and George, arrives at their new ranch to earn some money. Lennie is a mentally disabled man, who often gets into trouble. George takes care of Lennie, acting as a parent for him. Both have dreams of living together and owning private property. But their dream gets ruined when Lennie accidentally kills the owner’s daughter-in-law. Before anyone finds Lennie and torture him, George decides to kill Lennie himself. Here is the excerpt from this scene:
During 1929, the Great Depression became the event that shook America. People lost their jobs, which resulted in unemployment and homelessness. Hobos and “Okies” tried moving to California did not accept the jobless migrations because they feared their opportunities for success would be lost. In Steinbeck's novel Of Mice and Men several characters experience cruelty because society outcasts them. These characters include Lennie, Candy, and Crooks. Of the three characters, Crooks has the least opportunity for success because he's African-American and handicap.
In the book, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, there are many human and animal deaths all throughout the book. The most significant death was when George went against his will and killed Lennie. Lennie’s death was unjustified since he was never given any opportunity to make up for it or to just run and get away. After Lennie killed Curley’s wife no one could trust him and with that the workers on the ranch believed it was Lennie’s “turn” to die. Over the course of human history there have been many unjustified deaths leading to no charge against the assailants. Such as, death row, self-defense and euthanasia, these types of deaths are all unjustified and there are many reasons to authenticate it.
“And George raised the gun and steadied it, and he brought the muzzle of it close to the back of Lennie's head. The hand shook violently, but his face set and his hand steadied. He pulled the trigger.” George has just killed his best friend (Steinbeck 106). In John Steinbeck’s 1937 novella Of Mice and Men, George Milton and Lennie Small are a pair of pals that travel across California in search of work in the 1930s. With Lennie’s simple-minded thinking, he runs George and himself into trouble which costs them their job. The pair finally settles at a ranch somewhere in rural California after getting chased out of their last job. After a while, the inevitable happens and Lennie does something that does not look good for him, which causes men from the ranch to go chasing after him with the intent of killing him. Lennie flees to a nearby river where George meets him. To spare Lennie from the mental suffering of people always getting frustrated with him and criticizing his mistakes, George takes his life in an act of mercy.
It's been four months, the doctors don't know what else they can do. You don't want to accept it but, she tells you to. Your daughter, your own flesh and blood, pride and joy, is begging you to stop the pain and suffering with her big cloudy doll eyes. In the novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, one of the main characters, George, had come upon an unthinkable situation, where he best friend, Lennie, murders the wife of Curley. George faces the decision to weather let Lennie live, and suffer from Curley's vengeance, or to end Lennie's life permanently, and save him from suffering. The novel makes it clear that mercy killing, the act of putting an animal or human down painlessly without suffering, is a human way to show compassion towards
In the book, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, George and Lennie are migrant workers. They have to move around a lot because they run into many problems due to Lennie and his disability. George made a promise to Lennie's aunt that he would take care of him. They travel everywhere together and George cares for Lennie. At the end of the book, Lennie kills a ranch worker’s wife and a group of the ranch workers hunt Lennie down. George goes with them and finds Lennie, before any of them could and kills Lennie. George killed Lennie because he probably would have suffered a painful death. There is dispute over whether George committed murder or if what he did was considered Non- Voluntary Euthanasia. “Euthanasia is the practice of intentionally
Defend or challenge the notion that George's act of killing Lennie was one of kindness
In John Steinbeck 's classic novella, Of Mice and Men, one of the predominant themes that govern the story and characters in the book is friendship. One of the ways in which friendship plays a large role is in the area of mercy killing, which affects the main characters as well as the supporting ones. The two major mercy killings that occur in the book are those of Carlson 's killing of Candy 's old dog, and of George 's killing of Lennie. In both of these examples, the killer kills the other out of mercy and love, not for the usual motives of hatred, rage, anger, etc.
The mercy killing was an act of friendship between George and Lennie. The poem has a different job for a friend. The poem states,” You will always be there for me” (Wilks, line 26). According to “Always There” a friend has a job to always be there for you by your side. That is a different view from Of Mice and Men where the friendship has George doing what will keep Lennie from suffering even if it means losing Lennie
Banning a book is an attempt to remove or restrict materials based upon the objections of a person or group. According to the American Library Association, there were 275 books that were challenged in 2015. One of them, Of Mice and Men, has been banned all across the country for its references to racism, use of foul language, and its perceived endorsement of euthanasia. The first charge towards Of Mice and Men is the apparent racism that the novel portrays.
Murder or Mercy? When someone a person genuinely cares for is in deep trouble, that person would go to great lengths to help them, no matter the consequence. At the end of, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, George was morally justified for killing his friend Lennie because other people were looking to kill Lennie. Killing someone who suffers from a disease that is usually incurable and painful is called mercy killing. George does exactly this to his mentally illed friend, Lennie, who murdered his coworker’s wife.
When George finds out he knows that Lennie will be “lynched, beaten up, and probably be killed in a slow, painful way”, which means that he is in a great deal of trouble and it’ll cost him a ton of pain, he also knows that it is only a matter of time until Lennie ends up hurting another person. So to save Lennie from any pain George ends up killing him. He knows that this is the best thing for Lennie, because it will end up protecting him from any future trouble and now Lennie can’t hurt anyone
