Figurative language is one the most creative tools in the english language. Salinger models three in particular examples of that stand out the most. He uses these toget his point across. In The Catcher in the Rye, J. D. Salinger uses motifs, symbols, and extended metaphors to convey his idea that innocence can not be prevented.

Saliger uses motifs which allows the reader to understand vulnerability through the use of the hunting hat and estrangement from his surroundings by the migration of the ducks. The hat has dual meanings, one of which is his recurring display of insecurity and the other is his need to be different from the crowd. Holden uses his hat as a security blanket and he shows that best in this quote " My hunting hat really gave me quite a lot of protection, in a way, but I got soaked anyway," (Salinger 213). The hat is a shield for Holden, it protects him from his surroundings, not in a literal sense, but he likes to think that it's covers himself. At one point in the book he gives his hat to Phoebe right after he yells at her and she tells him to shut up, which to him shows corruption peeking in on what he sees as innocent. The ducks in the lagoon illustrate Holden inability to grapple with Allies death. "The ducks. Do you know, by any chance? I mean, does somebody come around in a truck or something and take them away, or do they fly away by themselves – go south or something?" This conversation with his cab driver shows the reader
