She was a person who never stopped believing in what she thought or knew was important to her and other people of her race and gender. There were many things that happened in Obama’s life that caused him to write. Things such as the segregation happening in the U.S at the time, his broken home and his feelings towards his absent father.
“You don’t make progress by standing on the sidelines, whimpering and complaining. You make progress by implementing ideas.” This quote relates to Shirley Chisholm because even though she was a women and African American, it did not stop her from becoming a congresswoman. Helen Keller says, “I slip back many times, I fall, I stand still, I run against the edge of hidden obstacles, I lose my temper and find it again and keep it better, I trudge on, I gain a little, I feel encouraged, I get more eager and climb higher and begin to see the widening horizon. Every struggle is a victory. One more effort and I reach the luminous cloud, the blue depths of the sky, the uplands of my desire,” (243). This applies to everyone because you have to fail before you can succeed, and these two faced some tough challenges but they powered through them and accomplished there goal, which was getting an education. I was born and raised in Haiti and moved to the United States in 2006 for a better education. After completing middle and high school, I decided to attend college. Because I came from a poor country, I am always motivated to strive for greatness. I grew up seeing people struggling and from those circumstances it is embedded in my head that I will not stop reaching for success. Attending Claflin University was the start on my successful journey.
The president, Barack Obama gave a speech at Howard University commencement ceremony. Speaking to the graduating class about the need to keep pushing for change he gave the students at the historically black university advise on how to shape your own future and to always strike for better. Unlike Langston Hughes, Maya Angelou devoted her life to inspiring African Americans to do whatever they wanted to do no matter what other people said. She also wanted to inspire people. Her poems Phenomenal Woman and Still I Rise inspired not only the African American people, which is was intended to, but the whole world including men. Like Hughes, Maya Angelou did not think that one day she would be reading one of her poems at President Clinton 's inauguration. But she did think that she would inspire young African American writers that they too could become wonderful writers in a white society. Angelou is hailed as one of the great voices of contemporary black literature and as a remarkable Renaissance woman.
Maya Angelou has inspired me in more ways than one, and I had to write about her. When Maya speaks people listen. She has this wisdom that only few have, especially when life wasn’t always great. She turned tragedy into triumph, and helped others in doing so. So, Maya has proven too many women, especially black women that you succeed, even if you have had a child in your teen years. She’s proof that with determination nothing is unattainable.
When I think of influential people, especially those of African American descent, so many names flash through my mind but my main inspiration would have to be Madam C.J. Walker. Many know her as the first female, of any race, self-made millionaire in America. While I may not a business major, I still draw much inspiration from her story. She was the first free-born member of her family and was raised in the Jim Crow South. She literally spent half of her life doing back breaking work by washing other people’s clothes seven days a week and only made $1.50 each week. She came from next to nothing but that didn’t dampen her spirit or dreams. Women, especially black women, in the late 1800s into the 20th century had few options to make money and their opinions were overlooked by the males that dominated society at the time. While women today are not nearly as oppressed as during Walker’s time we still have mountains to climb to obtain the true equality so many women crave.
Grew up on the Southside of Chicago, earned degrees from Princeton and Harvard Law School, married the man she loved, became the first black woman to be the First Lady of the United States, improved civil rights for people of color, and changed the face of feminism; these are some, but most certainly not all, of the accomplishments of the same woman, Michelle Obama. She is overall an inspiring woman to so many people that have had to struggle in life. She has done everything in her power to help those people lead a life of justice and equality that they otherwise, had been prevented from doing. Michelle Obama has achieved things most others with her upbringing could only dream of. She used her achievements to give those people a better chance. Michelle Obama has become an extremely important figure in America because of her inspiring advocacy for women, girls, and people of color, and she was doing this far before she became the first lady of the United States.
