There is no denying how our environment develops how we act and react in certain social parameters. As I started to look into what I wanted to accomplish during this week’s paper, I noticed how conformity is all around us, especially in the military. Now, we must not confuse conformity with compliance. Kenrick, Neuberg, and Cialdini (2015) note the difference between the two: “conformity involves changing one’s behavior to match the response or actions of others, to fit in with those around us,” and “compliance refers to the act of changing one’s behavior in response to a direct request” (p. 179). The conforming behavior is that when the member(s) arrive(s) into the conference room, they will observe who the highest ranking member in the room is and match the behavior displayed by the senior-ranking official. This behavior will match one of three scenarios upon entering. The easiest conformation is when the senior-ranking official is already sitting down. Here, the member(s) will do exactly what is natural and sit down as well. However, if the senior-ranking official is standing, the member(s) will find the chair they wish to occupy and prepare for the meeting, but continue to stand next to their chair where they will engage in conversation until the highest-ranking official sits down. The scenario which identifies the most conforming is when the lower-ranking member(s) are already in the conference room, and a senior-ranking official walks into the room. Once the observation is noticed by the member(s) already in the room, they will all stand to recognize and show courtesy to the higher-ranking official. Again, once the higher-ranking official sits down, all others can resume their previous behavior and sit down as well. With the three scenarios, it seemed the conformed behavior would occur regardless of the relationship between the members and senior-ranking official. Conformity and obedience are both social behaviors that are influenced by those around us and determines our behavior in social situations. When we change our attitude or behavior based on those around us, we are conforming to their behavior. When we obey what we are told, by what we perceive to be an authority figure, we are being obedient. Conformity and obedience can have positive or negative results on our lives, depending on the situation and the individuals involved.
Following orders is of the utmost importance in the military. Obedience is what enables the military to operate in an organized and effective manner which is clearly very important during challenging military situations. While an individual can question the notion of obedience in daily life, this luxury is often not available in the military where the grand goals and aims require smooth internal functioning and hierarchical coordination. Conformity is defined as a change in behavior, beliefs, and attitudes due to group pressure perceived as real (encompassing the presence of others) or imagined (encompassing the pressure of social standards) (Myers, 2010, p. 192). The concept of conformity is a powerful influence on the tendency for people to arrange their thoughts, perspectives, and ideas with others, especially when in a group. This takes away from a person’s individuality because they want to feel accepted by others and therefore, a person will accomplish this basic need of approval through conforming.

Culture of a nation is manifested and influenced by a number of factors. National psyche and traits being the most pronounced ones. Military culture , to a certain extent , is in harmony with the national culture, however, it has its own impulses and dynamics. It incorporates obedience that curtails individual freedom or at times it may be at tangent with the socio-cultural values of a society ; Military culture of British – Indian Army ,as inherited by us is a case in point here. Philosophy of our present military outlets draws strength from history , organisational infrastructure , uniform , traditions social moorings and a host of other factors which , despite numerous changes , is still undergoing the process of evolution.
People have been changing their behavior or obeying someone else’s commands for years. This continues today in our everyday lives. Conformity and obedience seem similar but differ in several ways. Conformity is defined by psychologists as a change in behavior or belief to accord with others. Similar to this, is obedience. Obedience is defined acting in accordance with a direct order or command. Normally people conform to reap a reward or to avoid punishment. In pyschology conformity can be descibed as an indiviual’s tendency to follow the unspoken rules or behaviours of the social group to which he/she belongs to or wants to be apart of. Many psychologists including , Jenness (1932), Sherif (1935) both experimented in psychology, investigating conformity and group pressure. For some, conformity is an unthinkable evil in American society. All individuals living within a community conform in some way to social norms, yet to label someone a conformist is akin to labeling them ignorant and unoriginal. However, conformity - and its associated impacts - are as integral to the functioning of society as the principles of nonconformity.
