The overall tone, mood and atmosphere of Wilfred Owen’s poem, ‘Dulce et Decorum Est’ is a mix between sadness, chaos and anger. A wide use of diverse similes and hyperbole has been used in Owens poem to create a mood of sadness. Owen has also added an atmosphere of chaos in his poem, he has achieved this by the use of movement and hyperbole. Another mood seen at the end of Owens poem is anger, he has portrayed this mood of anger through the use of content and imagery. Through a combination of these poetic devices create an overall tone, mood and atmosphere of sadness, chaos and anger. An example of imagery used in Owens poem is found on line 6, ‘But limped on, Blood-shot’ This quote from the poem shows that the soldiers were all injured and tired. This creates a mood of anger by showing that there was no mercy on any of the soldiers that were sent out to war. By slowing it down, the reader feels a mood of anger, towards the people who sent them and the ones they are fighting. The comma that has been used makes the pace slow, making it very intense and adding to the mood of anger. The words ‘blood shot’ shows that they were in a lot of trouble, either in pain or incredibly tired. It is clear that Owen has used the imagery in his poem to show an atmosphere and mood of anger. Owen has used a variety of diverse content adding to the mood and atmosphere of mood throughout his poem. This has been noticeably used in the last stanza on lines 25-27, ‘My friend, you would not tell with such high zest to children ardent for some desperate glory, the old Lie, Dulce et Decorum Est Pro patria mori’ This quote that Owen has used in his poem, shows how angry he is towards the government for lying to all the people, saying that is it good and proper to die for your country. Owen says that it is ‘the old lie’ because the government has been saying this for a very long time, and he says that it is now time for it to stop.
