Moral relativism is the view that moral decisions are true or false. If the world has one thing in common, it is disagreement. Because of this, it is easy to wonder if there are any truths behind our moral claims. Since it seems everyone believes that their morality is correct, it seems arrogant to believe that out of the many ideals, there is the correct one. There are many arguments against moral relativism. These arguments against relativism point out some of the issues it has. Morals are universal truths. They should not rely on current social impulses.
Different societies exhibit very different moral values. The refusal to acknowledge that there are universal moral values shared by every human society and that we should refrain from passing moral judgments on their beliefs and practices other than our own. Different cultures believe different things. You will see that morality will vary more and more the further you travel. These differences are what define these groups of people. Not only are these morals what define the lives of everyone, but they are also what places the meaning behind those people’s lives, whether what background they may come.
There are some moral values that societies share just because they are necessary for any society to continue to exist. We need to place an importance on life and telling the truth, for example, without these morals; murder and lying in a society will eventually fail.
