Moral principle and value in Youth Sports There are many different ways to view competiveness and moral value in youth sports. Some many think the methods used in most cases are not in the best interest of the child, while others feel that the structure of how children compete in sport are preparing them for the world ahead. Which ever side of the spectrum you are drawn to really doesn’t hold much meaning if you are able to address questions concerning moral value and moral principles. So, for this paper we will discuss three questions to help us best understand what our goal of society is in having youth sports. First, what are the moral issues that surround sport specialization at an early age? Secondly, what is the impact on a young athlete’s moral development when winning is emphasized by adults? Third, what moral principles do we need to implement in order to foster a healthy youth sport experience? Youth sport specialization has been seen as a moral issue in society for some time now. According to a study published in the Journal of Sports Sciences, “young athletes who competed in three sports at are 11, 13, and 15 were significantly more likely to compete at an elite national level in their preferred sport than those who specialized” (Reed, 1). Secondly, from an article published in 2012 by the Journal of Sports Science, “young male athletes who participated in multiple sports were found to be more physically fit, have better gross motor coordination, more explosive
