We, as humans, become good people by following a general set of rules known as morals. The book The Giver by Lois Lowry, explores a community where everyone is the same; therefore, when a child is given the job to keep the memories of the past, he becomes the receiver. he is burdened greatly, causing him to demonstrate courage and bravery. The main character “Jonas” gives us rules to live by, or morals, also known as themes. The book mainly demonstrates these two themes, “never give up” and “to feel joy you must first feel sorrow” The first theme is “never give up”, this is shown multiple times throughout the book. First, the theme is shown when the giver tells of the previous receiver requesting her own release, but “Jonas, would never have…

Everyone is to act the same in this book. Every person is assigned a job when they become a twelve and they are to work at the job until they go to the house of the old. This book is explained by Lois Lowry the author is explaining a whole different world than ours in this world he describes a person called the giver who is the receiver who hands off the job to Jonas one of the main characters who asks the receiver about all his memories and about what his job will be like. Jones had become the receiver. the giver gives him training and tells him what memories were like, the giver tells him why were like giver tells him why were like.
In the novel The Giver by Lois Lowry, the receivers are the only people who have feelings and memories. The elders are the people who choose what the best is for their people in the community and sometimes they go to the receiver for help on making the right decisions. The people from the community do not see color, or have freedom on making a decision for them. There is no love, feelings, and grandparents. Jonas is assigned to be the next receiver of the community; He was trained by the giver, who transfers memories of the pain and pleasures of life, who also shows him the truth and reality that is hidden to the community. Jonas’s community does not represent the ideal of society because there are no choices or distinctions between men
The setting of The Giver takes place in a fictional community known as the “Sameness”. Life here is supposed to be "perfect" because there is no pain or suffering. They don’t have to take
A book named The Giver by Lois Lowry published in 1993 teaches many life lessons that everyone needs to learn in some point in their life. In this novel it is about a twelve year old boy named Jonas who realizes his perfect society isn’t so perfect. When he was picked for the New Receiver of Memories he learned things that were hidden from the people of the community. The more Jonas learns about the past the more he wants to change how the community sees the world. In The Giver, the author uses an image of a utopia, the people in the community, and The Giver to develop the theme that emotions are needed in life.
The dystopian novel, The Giver by Lois Lowry is about a boy called Jonas becoming the new Receiver-of-Memories. Throughout the novel, the protagonist, Jonas matures as knowledge is gained, and begins to understand the deepest, and darkest secrets of the community he lives in that is seemly 'perfect'. The author has successfully analysed a variety of social issues present in today's modern world in the novel. Some issues implied are: lack of individuality which allows for easy control, the abandonment of emotions and the importance of memories.
President Ronald Reagan once said that,”Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it to our children in our bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected and passed down for them to do the same.” President Reagan would have been miserable living in the world as it is portrayed in “The Giver” by Lois Lowry. In the book there has been a utopian community built for people so that they have no freedom and no individual thoughts. Everyone is exactly the same. Everyone takes a daily pill which eliminates any memories, pain or stress. The protagonist named Jonas is chosen to receive all the worlds memories and figures out that everyone he loves has no feelings or independence. He decides to risk everything
Being unique is valuable. In the science fiction novel, The Giver, Lois Lowry uses Jonas to show that being unique is valuable. In the beginning of Giver, everyone in the community is the same and they have followed very specific rules or they will be “released.” The message of the novel, Giver, is being unique is valuable.
Honor and power are extremely different things. Honor is when people respect you and power is having control over others. Examples of this in history is the Ancient Japanese emperors. They were honored as important figures in Japanese Government but they had little power in the empire.
The Korean War split a unified country, creating two drastically differing sides. South Korea is seen as an economic power and a hub for advancement and innovation; on the other hand, North Koreans have suffered from detrimental social reforms. Under the strict regime of dictators Kim-Jong Un and Kim-Jong Il, personal freedoms have been stripped from the North Korean people, turning North Korea into a world-renowned symbol of poverty and suppression. Had these reforms not occurred, would North Korea be seen under such a negative light? The Giver, a dystopian novel written by author Lois Lowry, attempts to explain such a situation.
Henry David Thoreau, an American abolitionist once said, “Disobedience is the true foundation of liberty. The obedient must be slaves.” What Thoreau is claiming is that the people who are following the laws are the ones who are slaves while the individuals who rebel are the ones creating freedom and liberty. With the exercise of disobedience, progress is made in the society which could not have happened without the destruction of order. Disobedience should not be deemed as an act of wrongdoing but a necessity required to push forward.
The difference between honor and power is substantial in my opinion. Honor is earned, unlike power that is forced. In my first source The Giver by Lois Lowry states, “‘But sir,” Jonas suggested, since you have so much power--” The man corrected him.
Imagine living in a community where everything's the same and no one has any memories from the past. In Jonas’ community that’s reality. Jonas, like everyone else, didn’t know there could be a choice of being different, until he became the Receiver. Jonas receives knowledge about the past and wants to make a difference in the community. In the novel, The Giver, Lois Lowry shows knowledge is the key to creating differences in a community.
In the novel, The Giver by Lois Lowry, the author makes it clear through the main character Jonas that freedom and safety need to find an equal balance. Lowry shows the importance of deep emotions and family through Jonas. Jonas becomes the new receiver of memory and learns about the past. He also learned about the way it was when people knew what love was. Jonas’ father releases newborn children because they don’t weight the correct amount of weight or they don’t sleep well through the night. Release is a nice way of saying kill; the people of the community don’t know what kill means. They don’t have the freedom to expand their vocabulary. Lois Lowry makes it clear that safety has a negative side and you need that you need freedom to
The Giver Theme How much bravery would it take to leave home and go into the unknown. In Lois Lowry's book The Giver Jonas has to make that decision to help change his community. Lois Lowry explores theme in The Giver by making Jones brave and thoughtful which is good to live by. Jonas learns how to be brave by receiving the memories form The Giver which help him learn to make choices.
Although very well written and puts forth a point to be thought over, I will rarely recommend this book to another. Lois Lowry produces a novel that puts forth a hypothesis how our society will act in the future. Albeit, Lowry tends to paint the society as immoral while being unable to fabricate adequate supporting evidence. She utilizes Jonas as Christ-like figure who is moral against an immoral society to throw away any notion that Jonas' society was good. I am highly against the use of this novel in the middle school english curriculum as this indoctrinates Jonas' moral to developing minds.
