In his story,"The Most Dangerous Game," Richard Connell illustrates the idea that in order to overcome obstacles, people must stay calm in tense situations. Connell presents this theme many times throughout the story through Rainsford. After Rainsford falls in the water in the water and struggles trying to swim at a quick pace the author states," A certain cool-headedness had come to him,it was not the first time he had been in a tight place,"(Connell 10). This quote shows that this quote supports the them because when Rainsford fell into the water he immediately started to panic and tried to swim at a very quick pace. When he calmed down and started analyzing the situation he began to swims lower and found land. This theme is also showed another
Throughout the past five years, I have indulged myself in a fascinating array of short stories. From stories such as “Rikki-Tikki-Tavi” by Rudyard Kipling to “Song of the Trees” by Mildred D. Taylor, to even ‘The Smallest Dragonboy’ by Anne McCaffrey, just to say a few. All these stories stood out to fascinate me in a variety different ways. They included thrilling adventures, saddening romances, murder, as well as out of this world fantasies. Out of these numerous stories, there is one that will remain a fascinating and thrilling story - that is ‘The Most Dangerous Game’ by Richard Connell. To me ‘The Most Dangerous Game’ encompasses multiple
In the short story, “The Most Dangerous Game,” Connell uses similes and metaphors to compare two concepts and create a more detailed description. The use of these literary devices suggest that Connell wanted to convey an eerie setting that shows its more descriptive surrounding.
Hook: Do you like books about the hunter becoming the hunted? Well you’re in luck, The most Dangerous Game is a short story that has the hunter becomes the hunted.
It had been a week since Rainsford managed to kill the nefarious General Zaroff. The challenging part was almost over or so it seemed. There was not a clear way for Rainsford to escape. As days passed, Rainsford tried to escape. He tried making a boat from driftwood that he found, he tried swimming, he even tried sending a signal by using a flashlight. Rainsford had become so desperate that he even tried some ridiculous plans like trying to pole vault across the ocean. As a result, Rainsford ended up having huge gashes in his left leg ,which got infected, and he had to amputate it. As days turned into weeks, and weeks into months, Rainsford had lost hope and became bitter.
Richard Connell's "The Most Dangerous Game" is a very exciting story of a manhunt. This story made me think about the morality of hunting: Humans are the cleverest creatures on earth, but does it give them a license to kill the other animals and even human beings weaker than themselves? I give below a short summary of the story to set the scene and then I will explore the ethics involved in hunting as a sport. "The Most Dangerous Game" presents the story of a hunter, General Zaroff, who finds hunting human beings as the most dangerous and fascinating sport.
As the main character of “The Most Dangerous Game,” Rainsford goes through the phases of the archetypal hero’s journey. For example, Rainsford is surrendered to water when he falls into the ocean, which can also be interpreted as Rainsford falling into his thoughts and subconscious, suggesting the idea that the entire story can be a dream. As an archetypal hero, Rainsford proves his perseverance when “ he [swims] in that direction, swimming with slow, deliberate strokes, conserving his strength. For a seemingly endless time he [fights] the sea” (28). Rainsford does not give up even when
In “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, General Zaroff is shown as insane, competitive, and mean. General Zaroff is shown to be insane in the story when he kills humans for fun. “It must have courage, cunning, and, above all, it must be able to reason.” (Connell 69).
However, there is another motif that recurs in the “Most Dangerous Game” that deals with the elements of fear since fear has been mentioned throughout the entire story to describe what Rainsford feels. This “fear” motif can be used to describe how we, as humans, are afraid of something that might happen in the future or how we are frightened about things that may chase after us and endanger us. For instance, in the story, it describe the fear in Rainsford by stating, “The Cossack was the cat; he was the mouse. then it was that Rainsford knew the full meaning of terror.” This quote shows how Rainsford was afraid of General Zaroff chasing after him or scared of being hunted by him, which is similar to how we are afraid of being chased by our
There is a legend that says a curse hovers over Ship Trap Island that causes people who inhabit the land to do evil things. Some instances have proven that theory. First, there was that Angolan dictator, who was overthrown, then came to the island to regain power. Secondly, there was General Zaroff, who believed that hunting humans was morally okay. Then, there was Sanger Rainsford. When he had first come to the island, he seemed as if he were a moral and just person. After defeating the General, he went on to establish a foundation that made sure equality and human rights were put into play. Ultimately, the foundation experienced a downfall: it was shut down.
Being lost in an island, hungry, and tired is not an everyday thing. So Rainsford being in that situation, had no other choice than except Zaroff’s generosity. Zaroff gave Rainsford clothes, food and, a place to sleep. Zaroff tells Rainsford to join him for dinner, and Rainsford went to the dinner room as told. Sitting down eating there meal. The two men’s starts a conversation and starts to talk about their lives. Zaroff learns a lot of things about Rainsford and so does Rainsford. Rainsford learns that Zaroff is a smart man and a hunter just like him, but Zaroff him hunting people is part of things that he hunts for. Zaroff on another hand learns that Rainsford is a pretty smart, educated man and lastly a hunter.4
In the book “The Most Dangerous Game” is about killing for game then being turned over and being the hunted here's some quotes and details what had happened. Who were the hunters in the story? The hunters were Rainsford and General Zaroff but the story turns. Who were the hunted in the story? Again the story shifts and everything changes. Do you agree with the original statement? The original statement was “The world is made of two classes -- the hunters and the huntees.” The most Dangerous game teaches us why not to hunt for sport.
In “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, Sanger Rainsford is shown as brave, athletic, and clever. Rainsford is shown to be brave when he take on the challenge of being hunted by General Zaroff. “I must keep my nerve. I must keep my nerve” (Rainsford 75). This quote shows that Rainsford is brave because he is trying to put his feelings aside and get through the game.
Finny breaking his leg caused him to change. In the beginning of the book, Fin always wanted to be active and even created a new game called blitzball, but he did not care about his academics. “In addition to my own work, I was dividing my time between tutoring Finny in studies and being tutored by him in sports.” (P. 63) Before the accident, Finny didn’t worry about studying and school, he just wanted to play sports, and get his best friend to play sports, so the boys tutored each other. After the accident, Finny became someone who tried to hide the truth with excuses to make himself feel better. “I’ll hate it everywhere if I’m not in this war! Why do you think I kept saying there wasn’t any war all winter?” (P. 190) Fin said the war wasn’t
In the story, The Most Dangerous Game, Rainsford gets trapped on Ship-trap Island and has no way to get out so he needs a food source to survive. He needs to hunt for food, he can't only eat plants the whole time he is there. Before Rainsford fell off the boat, he was talking to his friend about how “the hunter had his nerve with him to tackle [the animal] with a light gun” (Connell 22). Rainsford knows when a gun is too small to hunt an animal, it seems that Rainsford clearly knows a lot about hunting, considering he has been hunting his whole life. As Rainsford has been walking around for awhile, he comes across this huge mansion, he is invited inside and as he is walking “the hall [there] were mounted heads of many animals-- lions, tigers,
(reword MA)In “The Most Dangerous Game,” the story shows adapting quickly and having courage in a dangerous situation is crucial. (m1MA)For example, Rainsford had to adapt to being alone in an unknown place to survive after he went overboard. (m2MA)Rainsford is also able adapt by intelligenigence. He was able to figure, “Where there's pistol shots there's men, where there's men there's food.” (Connell, page 3) (reword MB)
