The Most Dangerous Game starts with “Sanger Rainsford steaming south to brazil to hunt jaguars in the amazon with a fellow hunter his friend named Whitney.” Rainsford is a heartless hunter, who hunts for sport with his fellow friend. They hear shots fired in the distance but his friend is on his way to bed and “Rainsford falls off the yacht, but saves himself by swimming to the rocky shore of a mysterious island. He knocks on the door of a huge mansion on the island. He is welcomed in as if he lives there by general Zaroff, and a powerful servant, deaf-mute named Ivan.” He fed him and the “general explains how he is bored of regular hunting, and has a new way of hunting. He started hunting people because they get shipwrecked and have to play his game. “ He gives Rainsford a choice to play his game or Ivans game. He choose the generals game and he was only given a hunting knife. He survives all three nights, the first night he hid in the tree and the general did not find him. The second night he tricked the general and injured the general's arm so he went back to heal. The third night he made a trap in the Ground with spikes in it so when they fell in they will be stabbed. Rainsford gets back after not getting killed and fights the general and kills him. General Zaroff eventually sees Rainsford but decides not to kill him just yet and walks past the tree Rainsford was perched upon. Rainsford becomes an emotional wreck in the tree. He struggles to keep his nerve majorly at this point when he describes his current state when he says, "Rainsford held his breath. The general's eyes had left the ground and were travelling inch by inch up the tree. Rainsford froze there, every muscle tensed up for a spring. But the sharp eyes of the hunter stopped before they reached the limb where Rainsford lay." (Connell 231). One can just imagine how much stress and pressure was placed on Rainsford. Rainsford tries to stay calm but later has to remind himself to stay calm in order to conceal his location. Rainsford manages to escape the grasp of General Zaroff but comes across the deaf and blind Ivan with his hounds. Rainsford builds a pit in the ground that has stakes at the bottom of it. He lures the dogs and they fall into the hole. The next tactic Rainsford uses is when he sees Ivan and General Zaroff walking near his direction. He attaches a knife to a vine and Ivan catches it and dies. Rainsford still has to repeat the phrase, "Nerve,nerve, nerve" to keep himself calm (Connell 235). It had been a week since Rainsford managed to kill the nefarious General Zaroff. The challenging part was almost over or so it seemed. There was not a clear way for Rainsford to escape. As days passed, Rainsford tried to escape. He tried making a boat from driftwood that he found, he tried swimming, he even tried sending a signal by using a flashlight. Rainsford had become so desperate that he even tried some ridiculous plans like trying to pole vault across the ocean. As a result, Rainsford ended up having huge gashes in his left leg ,which got infected, and he had to amputate it. As days turned into weeks, and weeks into months, Rainsford had lost hope and became bitter.
Even though clearly distraught Rainsford was able to make key decisions to save his life. “Nerve, nerve, nerve” he panted, as he dashed along …. Then he leaped far into the sea.”(18). This quote tells the reader even while battling nerves and running away from a pack of dogs Rainsford was able to make a imperative choice to save his life. Rainsford survives the three days to beat Zaroff and win the game but still feels uneasy will not rest until General Zaroff is dead. “I am still a beast at bay,” he said, in a low, hoarse voice.” Get ready, General Zaroff.”(18). This quote discloses to the reader that Rainsford felt like quarry and wanted Zaroff dead and was not satisfied with merely winning the game.This quote also shows what kind of man Rainsford is and how he is willing to die for what he feels is right. Rainsford battled many trials throughout the story but somehow managed to make the best out of each one.
After the conversations between Rainsford and the General, Rainsford wants to leave, but can not due to the knowledge of Zaroff’s corrupt game; he ends up playing the amoral game for the preservation of his life, although he could lose it.
Rainsford return to the Mansion and begins to look around everywhere. He proceeds to the room with all the heads and begins laughing uncontrollably. Then he goes to the basement and sees a lot of dead bodies. They all appear to have been tortured and beat to death which was done by Ivan. Rainsford starts beating the bodies that are dead for no reason and doesn’t stop. He then heads back upstairs then grabs a drink and he sits down in peace.
So Rainsford and Zaroff starts and Rainsford jumped in front of him and pulls out his sword out looks at Zaroff and says “I am going to win this fight and get the excellent bed.” So once he says that to Zaroff he came at him with another sword. Zaroff swings first and he cuts his arm and Rainsford screamed out and said “OUCH!! YOU ARE GOING TO DIE!” So they continued to fight and then Rainsford called in back up and he called Mr. Whitney to the fight and he brought a lot of swords. Then they started to fight and Mr. Whitney help Rainsford. So he went to the other side to run up behind
Rainsford realized that Zaroff had been playing a game with him. When Zaroff had walked off, Rainsford steeled his nerve and moved on. Rainsford decided to set a trap for Zaroff. If Zaroff trapped in it, a dead tree would fall on him. Soon Zaroff's foot sat off the trap, but he leaped back and only his shoulder was injured. He congratulated Rainsford and told him he was returning to the chateau to get his wound looked at but he would be back. Rainsford fled through the forest.
Rainsford, a big game hunter, falls overboard on his boat and falls into the Caribbean Sea. He struggles to keep his head up but he manages to make it to the closest island shore. Rainsford soon discovers that he is on shipwreck island, a island that most people don’t escape. While he explores the island he runs into many life threatening encounters. In order to escape he will have to come up with good skills to keep him alive while he participates in General Zaroff’s game. In order to win this game he will have to hide in the jungle for three nights and to not get seen or caught, and if he does then General Zaroff, another hunter, gets to kill him. After running for two hours Rainsford realizes he must make the Zaroff’s hunt a more difficult. He set off to make a trail not even Zaroff could follow but, the General did indeed follow the trail. Zaroff allowed Rainsford to survive this event and live another day. Rainsford continues his transformation from hunter to murderer as each encounter with Zaroff becomes deadlier and deadlier. Rainsford uses traps to further escalate the violence aimed for Zaroff: first he injures Zaroff with a branch, second he kills one of the bloodhounds in a pit and then he kills Ivan with the knife tied to a branch. His understanding that Zaroff would not stop the hunt leads Rainsford to his final act. He kills General Zaroff in his bedroom and sleeps in his bed. The course of events transformed Rainsford, the hunter, into what he proclaimed earlier he was not, a murderer.
The next morning, Rainsford woke up in Zaroff’s excellent bed. With every wonder in the world thinking “how in the world did I get in General Zaroff’s bedroom.” As Rainsford starts to think what will happen if the General finds him in his bedroom, or what will he think he was doing in his room so he starts to run out of the room, as quick as possible like he’s never ran before. But before Rainsford can escape out of Zaroff’s luxurious bedroom he’s stopped by a random man named, who looks at Rainsford suspiciously so Rainsford begins to walk away quickly before Ivan who is doing his wake up call for the General notices that the General isn’t in his room. In the text, Rainsford was on his own whilst being hunted by General Zaroff. Readers formed a sensation of seclusion as they indulged in Rainsford’s thoughts. However, he never was actually alone in the film. There was always another character with him, which prevented a solitary mood from appearing.
He started cutting down trees with the knife that was on the trap during the fight. As he finished making the boat The General’s Son rushed outside to see what he was doing. The General’s Son then stated “Rainsford I want to challenge you with another game.” Rainsford was ready to leave. He had his boat set up, and he knew if he did not get out of the island fast he would soon be dead. He stated to The General’s Son “Ok I will stay and challenge you to another game.” Rainsford was shaking. He then made a plan. He thought to himself that he would stay until night time when The General’s Son was asleep, and then he would escape the island. The day went on. It was finally night time! Rainsford snuck out of the mansion. He went to go get the boat. When Rainsford got to where he left the boat he realized it was not there! All of a sudden The General’s Son started storming out in anger of the mansion screaming “I knew you would escape, I have an alarm!” Rainsford panicked. He then realized he would just have to swim out. He jumped in the water and started dog paddling as the waves violently hit him. The General’s Son started shooting. Rainsford was in the water really far out. He felt safe. Rainsford got on his back and started floating on the water. He found a big rock in the middle of the ocean and sat on it. He quickly realized that what he was sitting on was not just a rock. It was a piece of land! He started
As the two men eat Borscht, Rainsford then describes what his life has been before he meet Zaroff, but Zaroff hints that he has found a new animal to hunt. Rainsford was very confused not knowing it was him that was going to be hunted. Zaroff captures Rainsford and trains him for his experience for being hunted by Zaroff. When Rainsford escaped Zaroff he found him so quickly that Rainsford had to find a new place to survive. Zaroff has traps and hounds on that island that are chasing Rainsford and Ivan. Sadly the same hound that killed Ivan is now hunting Rainsford.
