Galen’s medical research was only directed and focused towards animal anatomy, with his observations on animal bodies. Furthermore, his research results in irrelevance and ineffectiveness for the human body. The Renaissance period was an important historical event, as within this time, many new and exciting discoveries were made. Islamic physicians shared their understanding of anatomy and their herbal remedies in which other physicians added to, which resulted in better, more effective cures. Asia brought cures too, such as Quinine, which is used as a preparation in the treatment of Malaria and it comes from the bark of Quina Trees. Another example of anatomical research from Asia is Laudanum, which is based on opium. Laudanum, was used a painkiller in which the use of, spread quickly. Paracelsus, a Swiss-German physician discovered a cure for the deadly disease Syphilis. His cure involved taking measured doses of mercury compounds internally. Another key person in the medical developments of the Renaissance period was William Harvey, an English physician. He was the first person to understand the whole system of blood circulation in the human

The Renaissance was a period in history that began in Italy dating back to around the 1300s. It followed The Middle Ages and was considered a time of “rebirth”. The people of Europe increased much interest in learning, in the arts and in literature. It also provided the world with a big advancement in science and technology. People questioned old beliefs and were able to turn their miseries into optimism. The Renaissance changed man’s view of man in at least four areas: art, literature, astronomy, and anatomy.
The Renaissance is a period in Europe, from the 14th to the 17th century, considered the bridge between the Middle Ages and modern history. It started as a cultural movement in Italy in the Late Medieval period and later spread to the rest of Europe, marking the beginning of the Early Modern Age. The Renaissance changed the view of man on the world from how man viewed the world during the middle ages. The Renaissance was the period of advances in the fields of arts, culture, philosophy, humanism, science and economy. The invention of the printing press helped spread literacy and made ancient texts, which were previously only available in Latin or Greek, that the common person didn’t know, available in languages that people could understand. The Renaissance’s Humanism ideas made everybody question previously accepted knowledge which eventually lead to the scientific revolution.
During the Renaissance there were many great scientific discoveries. An example of one of these discoveries can be found in document 7. In this document, Johannes Kepler explores the theory that planets may orbit in a geometrical pattern. To this day, it is known that this claim is true, and Kepler made this discovery without modern day technology. During the Middle Ages there was little focus on scientific discovery but seemingly everyone was interested in science during the Renaissance. Another example of significant scientific discovery during the Renaissance is found in document 6. Document 6 consists of sketches of the skeletal and muscular system from Leonardo da Vinci. In the Middle Ages, most people were not aware of the structure of their bodies but this was discovered during the Renaissance. Without the scholars and scientists of the Renaissance, the structure of the human body may still be a undiscovered. In addition, our treatment for various ailments may not be as sophisticated and complex. The scientific discoveries and the revival of education during the Renaissance contribute to the distinctness of the Renaissance just as much as the humanist
William Harvey published the book called “An Anatomical Account of the Motion of the Heart and Blood in Animals” which was officially published a fair time after the other two’s books. He proved that the heart acts as a pump by recirculating the blood, and showed that the blood flows around the body and is carried away by the arteries and is carried back into the heart by the veins. This had a limited impact because likewise to Vesalius, it did not make anyone healthier at the time, and it made more of a long term impact on medicine. He had not found a way to practically cure people because he had just made a book to further people’s knowledge on how the body works. Although his book is very useful for us nowadays, at the time people would not know how to approach it, and really wouldn’t make much of an impact on the people’s health.

Galen’s model was proven wrong by Renaissance anatomists. Despite Galen’s model being used for so many years, Vesalius proved the vena cava could not have come from the liver. Realdo Columbo’s experimentation also gathered information about the heart. It was revealed that the systole phase of the heart is active as it constricts and pumped blood into the arteries while the dystole phase is the inactive phase of the heart (“About William Harvery”). Harvey, inspired by Vesalius’s discoveries, later discovered the process of blood circulation in 1628 (“Renaissance medicine”).
Many things changed from Medieval Times to the Renaissance. The catholic church saw it’s reign secede and individualism increase in the minds of the people of the time. Many ancient civilizations, such as the Romans, Greeks, and Egyptians, pushed medical knowledge forward until the Middle Ages, when medical knowledge was believed to have slowed down. However, that is not the case. The Middle Ages were a time of change and improvement, they shaped the modern world. The Middle Ages revolutionized medical practices, physicians linked filth to the spread of disease, many practical diagnoses and treatments for common illnesses were discovered, and medical training programs in universities became well established.
