Known as Muhammad Ali he was born by the name of Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr. Muhammad Ali is known for his boxing career, but also Ali was a person who believed that war and violence was unjustifiable. As a fighter he took on some of the great names of boxing. To many, he is widely regarded as one of the most significant and celebrated sports figures of the 20th century. He was known as a very inspiring and controversial figure both inside and outside the ring. He was an Olympic and professional boxer and a man who campaigned for a social change.

In many states, he was banned from fighting. A federal court ruled that the ban on Ali in New York was against the law, and Ali was free to return to the ring. By standing up for his beliefs, Ali lost his peak years as an athlete. He was beginning to slow down. Ali was very popular especially among young blacks who loved what he represented-black pride, courage, and beauty. The Supreme Court voted that Ali was within his rights to refuse the draft and he would not be fined or sent to jail. Ali fought all of the big named boxers including George Foreman, Wilt Chamberlain, Jerry Quarry, Joe Frazier, Floyd Patterson, Bob Foster and Ken Norton to name a few. Ali was married 4 times. Ali’s famous catchphrase was “float like a butterfly, sting like a bee”. Ali talked a lot of trash to his opponents which was said that he taunted and baited his opponents.
