In the story The Things They Carried Tim O’Brien didn’t mention anything about traditional war heroes. I think this was a great idea, because there are no traditional war heroes. A traditional war hero is someone who is fearless and someone who can’t be harmed mentally or emotionally. But in The Things They Carried the soldiers out on the front lines were emotionally and physically scarred. Tim O’Brien didn’t write about traditional war heroes, O’Brien wrote about normal people, people with different views on the Vietnam war, and how the war affected these people.

In Tim O’Brien’s The Things They Carried, he emphasizes a chapter on “The Man I Killed”, which describes the characteristics of a young Vietnamese man in which O’Brien may or may not have killed with a grenade. The novel is not chronologically sequenced, which leaves more room for the reader to engage in a critical thought process that fully bridges the author’s mind to their own. In O’Brien’s chapter, “The Man I Killed”, he attempts to humanize the enemy in a way that draws little separation between the enemy and himself by relating the enemy’s life prior to the war to his, and illustrates the war through the eyes of the soldiers who fought it.

O’Brien creates a fictional anecdote by claiming he killed a man in order to represent the weight of responsibility and guilt all soldiers experience regardless of their own involvement. The decisions a soldier makes in battle often cause immediate regret and guilt, O’Brien relays this immediate remorse when he describes the immediate emotions following the death of the enemy soldier. While reminiscing years later on the years he served, O’Brien remembers his initial thoughts after killing the enemy soldier, “I was terrified. There were no thoughts about killing.

Both of the men realize that the man they killed could've been a friend, and were someone who really wasn't the enemy. The relationship between these two stories is that war can tear families apart. The short story “The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien used many different types of literary devices. Imagery is used to illustrate the war in a descriptive way. Figurative and literal language is used to describe the things that the soldiers carried with them; physically and emotionally. Some of the things that the soldiers carried with them were symbols of luck. Personification was used when mentioning these good lucks symbols and it was also used to describe the dead. Alliteration was used in the short story to emphasize the sound of how fast life could end while being at war.

This book is an actual war story where it has numerous of stories about his experiences. But under all those harsh stories and events lies one of the most powerful forces, and that is love. Could it be that instead these stories are based on love and not war? When I say love I do not mean that they are all homosexual but rather they are best friends, battle buddies, loyal to each other. They may get into fights but they all have each others back at the end of the day and I’m going to go through three characters and how they connected with the author, Tim O’Brien.

PTSD is a disorder that can happen to anyone, but many see it diagnosed in war veterans, from the effects of war. Many authors use storytelling as a vehicle to convey the immortality of past selves and those who have passed to not only in their piece of literature but in their life as an author. In Tim O’Brien’s work of fiction The Things They Carried, through his final chapter “The Lives of the Dead,” O 'Brien conveys that writing is a matter of survival since, the powers of storytelling can ensure the immortality of all those who were significant in his life. Through their immortality, O’Brien has the ability to save himself with a simple story. Through snippets of main plot event of other chapters, O’Brien speaks to the fact the dead have not actually left; they are gone physically, but not spiritually or emotionally. They live on in memories as Linda lives on in the memories of O’Brien and as many of his war buddies live on through his stories. He can revive them and bring them back to the world through his writings and through these emotions or events he experienced with them and with their deaths can make them immortal. Through the reminiscent stories of Linda and O’Brien’s war companions and himself, O’Brien conveys that storytelling allows people to reanimate others who have died and past selves to create an immortality of humans.

The story “The Things They Carried” completely changed my perspective about the soldiers of the Vietnam war. Although I have always admired the veterans, I have never thought deeply about their experiences. This story does a phenomenal job of putting the war in perspective and allowing the reader to feel as though he witnessed the war himself. The story “The Things They Carried” was special to me because it made me appreciate the soldiers and servicemen of the Vietnam war.

War does not only destroy countries, they destroy the minds and bodies of soldiers as well. War can be a terrifying experience that can affect everyone. Soldiers are leaving their families, with the chance of not coming back, friends are turning against each other and innocent human beings are getting killed. Soldiers came back from war in a dehumanized state because of what they have witnessed and gone through. Liam O’ Flaherty, author of, “The Sniper,” chose to have an Irish sniper up against another sniper with the same skills, they fought throughout the night in a rather dangerous setting, causing them to be at risk of death or at the risk of losing their minds. In the short story, “The Sniper,” the author reveals the devastating consequences of war through the physical and psychological effects that the soldier suffers.
