Soldiers are trained to view the enemy like beasts , but after the killing , they realize that they have killed a man just like them . For instance , “ The Man He Killed “ by Thomas Hardy is a poem about a soldier who kills another soldier in war . He says , “ Yes quaint and curious war is / You shot a fellow down / You’d treat if met where any bar is / Or help to half a crown .”(17-20). He says that he shot the soldier because he is my enemy ? Yes he is my enemy , but he can be my friend outside the war . Furthermore , Tim O’Brien in his novel The Things They Carried explains that how it feels after he kills his enemy soldier .
