Being a dentist I am directly involved in medical field. My area of specialization usually gets me into situations where I frequently encounter challenging human relation incidents. Such incidents require careful handling and open minded approach, which or else, might lead to a poor human relation experience. The fear of the common public towards dentistry often persuades them to do a research in the internet or to seek advice from peer group. Such researches often results in false conclusions and ends up the person in a dentist’s clinic with wrong attitudes. These situations often lead to challenging human relations encounter which if not handled in a professional way, occasionally ends up with a negative result.
One such experience I personally had to confront with was when a person walked into my clinic saying he is having an oral cancer. I was junior dental surgeon then, doing my internship in the Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology, in a hospital back in India. Before beginning the check up I asked him few details about his complaint, from which I found out that he had come to this conclusion based on his internet researches and not based on any previous medical checkups. Furthermore on examination I could find out that the issue which he was mentioning was just a case of ‘cheek biting’ and not oral cancer as he was had concluded from his research. I explained to him my findings and that what he had found from internet is wrong.
He was not convinced by my
The dental hygienist is expected to respect the diverse values, beliefs, and cultures present in individuals and communities. When providing dental hygiene care, dental hygienists must support the right of the individual to have access to the necessary information and provide opportunities for dialogue to allow the individual patient to make informed care decisions without coercion (ADHA Policy Manual, 2016.) It is important for the oral health care provider to focus on the needs of the patient versus their own needs or those of the practice. It is also important that every patient be treated with the upmost respect regardless of race, color, age, gender, ethnicity, social class, disability or oral conditions. The patient must also be respectful towards the provider and dental team and what they are doing to improve the patient’s oral health. This balance allows the patient and provider to both be
Along with dental procedures, I observed various work dynamics while shadowing. I realized that social responsibility, leadership, teamwork, and communication are all important factors in a dental office. I am thankful for my past experiences that helped me to develop all of these skills. While shadowing I saw that it is crucial for a dentist to communicate not only with his staff but also with his
While most of the patients I interacted with were seeking non-dental care, I met patients who were seeking care to health conditions that stem from their oral health such as oral abscesses, which our team was unable to treat except for prescribing antibiotics or painkillers. I encountered similar situations when I shadowed physicians in the emergency room of hospitals, observing a variety of craniofacial disorders originating from a preventable tooth decay. From these observations, I learned that patients often did not receive treatment that addressed the root of their problems: their oral health. As the result, I learned that many physicians saw the same patient repeatedly for problems that would otherwise be easily prevented through proper preventive dental care. Determining to address the unmet needs for accessible preventive dental care, I decided to pursue a career in dentistry so that I can provide a positive and meaningful impact to the underserved community on their oral health and ultimately their overall
Dentistry, in one form or another, helps abate feelings of hopelessness and accountability that occur during periods of confusion. Not only are they knowledgeable about specific nuances that accompany oral hygiene, but they are also very good communicators. During my interview with the interviewee continually stressed the importance of communication. Communication is imperative in many respects as individuals seek closure within the context of an uncertain world. As she indicated throughout the interview, dental hygienist helps to facilitate a healthy exchange of both concepts and notions to an already emotional individual. This is quite important as the dentist can
In clinical settings next fall and spring I intend to use research methods to assist my patients in achieving patient’s human needs. Before starting to work on the patient the treatment plan based on each patient’s need will be developed by me. As a dental hygienist student I would provide efficient educational methods by administering evidence-based facts when preparing individualized patient-centered
I feel the knowledge I have acquired from both private and NHS dentistry lays a solid foundation to build upon at university level study. Ten years of employment has shown me the importance of maintaining appropriate personal and professional behaviour; I am aware that I am constantly representing the dental profession, even outside the workplace. I embrace being patient, positive and productive and found an optimistic, constructive attitude can encourage great team work with colleagues, to deliver the best service, particularly in a patient setting. In recognition of my professionalism, I was given the responsibility of the in-practice training of three trainee Dental Nurses and commended on my efforts to provide them with a thorough understanding of working in surgery. In further appreciation of my commitment, I was selected by management to assist a European Economic Area national dentist, who relied on my knowledge of NHS dentistry to support him, in his Vocational Training Equivalent
As a dental hygiene care provider (DHCP), the dental hygienist provide her services to a range of different clients. Canada is a cultural mosaic country, that opens its door and opportunities to many different individuals, which makes it a multicultural and diverse country. The mission of a dental hygienist is to implement the codes of ethics (beneficence, autonomy, integrity, accountability and confidentiality) when interacting with clients and their families as well as to implement effective interventions as a dental hygienist (educator, researcher, administrator/manager, clinician, public health , oral health promoter). It is very important for dental hygiene to be sensitive, aware, have knowledge, skills, and to be competent to work with client from different cultures, and to work effectively in cross-cultural situations. Dental hygienist should be in a continuos
In this POW we have to describe what we would do once we complete high school and move out, we have to explain what part time job we get, how much we pay for bills, groceries, transportation, and where we live at. When we do this we can have roommates to help pay for items, or we can be alone. In order for this to work we can’t go over our budget with or else it doesn’t work.

Health care has been an issue for the United States of America for multiple years. Dental care, a topic that does not get much attention because people believe it is trivial, plays a major part in people’s lives, particularly children. Gerard van Honthorst’s The Tooth Puller shows a dentist pulling a patient’s tooth with five observers watching. Van Honthorst shows how in awe or scared people are of the dentist. There is a negative outlook on dentists and dental care: people are afraid of the dentist giving them their negative connotation, while dental care only causes pain in many people eyes. There is a problem in the health care system and improvement in the system is needed because health care is a right for every citizen, especially dental care. The United States of America’s government should allow dental therapist to conduct the procedure that normal dentist conduct for free for children under the age of twelve. The government should fund the teaching, training, and employment of dental therapists to care for underserved people.
Not just in the ghetto study case, the sociological science today, no matter qualitative or quantitative research, has developed a complete set of research methods, including questionnaires design, statistics, literature reading, high-technological software and so forth. Though hiring people, researchers even could accomplish a complete study, completely isolated with from interviewees. This sorts of methods were refer as ‘skin trade’ in John O’Neill’s sense. The sociological dilemma is just like dentist’s dilemma. As a mouth-miner he is employed in a dark hole filling cavities, stopping odours, uprooting and removing debris. To save face as a professional it is essential for him to spend more time on the surface than in mouth-mining. Thus the office decor, receptionist, nurse, and para-surgical front of the dentist’s suite furnishes the necessary
The social interaction is an integral part of everyday life of each individual, which is learned from the early childhood and is innate in its nature. It includes the social exchange of information, the ability to communicate, decide, and take responsibility for one’s action. The routine work of healthcare professionals includes the information exchange on an everyday basis. The excellent knowledge of primary disciplines necessary for the practice is crucial for the healthcare professional; however, one can encounter the difficulties without the deeper understanding of ethical principles of communication in the healthcare environment. The book “Health Professional and Patient Interaction”” by R. Purtilo, A. Haddad, and R. Doherty introduces the readers with the basic ethical principles and behaviors in the healthcare setting. The key points that the healthcare professional has to practice to achieve success and harmonic professional relationship with the patient are: respect in all circumstances, the ability to listen, the readiness for challenges, and care with empathy to the patient situation beyond any limits.
This reflection acts as my fourth reflection since I have started my internship at Comfort Dental under the Guidance of Dr. Trino Nuno. The semester is coming to an end, and I have enjoyed my time at Comfort Dental., I previously had a clinical and administrative internship at Smile Works Dentistry in Rockwall, Texas and I can now tell you that my experience at these two dental practices was incredibly different. At Smile Works, I quickly got used to the way the practice was run because it was not that complicated and I only had one doctor’s schedule to manage. However, at Comfort Dental I still struggle with managing day-to-day functions. The reason I struggle is that Comfort Dental has three doctors and a lot more staff. Also, the computer system that I mastered at Smile Works is not the same computer system that they use at Comfort Dental. I got the chance to use all to same skills in this internship. I answered phones, checked that patient’s insurance plans are eligible to be billed and scanned paper documents into a hard drive.
I’m currently worked at a dental office as a part-time dental assistant. My superior would be my boss/dentist of the entire office. Yaned is my clinical colleague in the office for about 2 years. Brenda is the receptionist for the office; she is also one of my close friends.
As an Oral Health professionals (OHP) we should be able to analyse a critical incident with positive and negative feedback, in order to improve ourselves both professionally and personally (Mofidi, Strauss, Pitnet, & Sandler, 2003). On one particular day during the practice in the simulation (sim) clinic, I had accidently prep the cavity on the wrong teeth. The objectives for having daily practice in the sim clinic, was to allow learning experience from my mistakes and able to relate them into the actual scenario. It was the most influence experience to me and I was able to learn how to deal with situation straight away.
