A learning experience When entering the double doors of the dojo you have no idea what you will be doing for this test until you actually do it. You just have to go with the flow and use the skills that you have learned over the years and years of training. That was the feeling I had when going for my first degree brown belt. I knew how these test work you start with basics which was the most easiest part of the test. Then there is the kata which is the combination of basics in a set. The last part of the test is ring fighting. This is where you have to fight three people in a row and the match won’t end until you can score the point on the other person. Seem pretty easy for a guy like me until you realize that I am well known in the …show more content…
The last part of the test was ring fighting and I was already fading. I Had a little bit until my match. I caught my breath and drank some water it was not enough to get me through. My match came and felt almost there but, not back to full strength. The match came I fought with what I learned over the years and my opponent had done the same. After the first minute of the fight all of a sudden boom a shot to head. The next thing I knew I was seeing stars. One of the sensei’s there was paramedic and knew what to do. He came over and asked me some questions and stated that I may or not have sustained a partial concussion. I needed to continue so I did. During as they were giving my opponent the penalty. Another problem arose, a drip of blood fell from my face. I made it clear that it had happened I took a tissue and rolled it up and put it in my nose to stop the bleeding. One of the other sensei’s there said it was a good look for me. I still kept going then won the match. That was it now the tricky part. Waiting for the results is always the part I forget about and fear the most. After a good solid twenty minutes all the judges had come back told everyone to get back in line. The lower ranks in the back went first which made tension in the front line very high. It finally came to me and I had done it somehow. I will remember that day because of one picture me holding my certificate and a piece of bloody tissue coming from my
This ceremony is when everyone is able to find out if they if they are a Top Ten or Top Three Qualifier for their specific competitive event. This process is done by displaying the Top nine thousand people at the conference. Finally, once all the qualifiers are on stage, the Top Three Qualifiers are awarded with their medals and everyone exits. I was feeling nervous at the beginning of the ceremony. This feeling grew stronger but before I knew it, it was time for Medical Photography to be announced. Before my eyes could even reach the bottom of the list my friends were jumping up and down and cheering for me! My name was on the Top Ten Qualifier List! I quickly gave my friends a hug and rushed to the stage. I waited in line with the rest of the qualifiers before we all could enter the stage. While we waited I could feel my heart racing as I thought about how many people I was about to stand in front of. I was so scared I was going to trip! Someone who looked very official came around to each of us to fix our hair and our blazers. As we entered the stage I felt the bright, hot lights flash us as the Top Three Qualifiers were announced. I was not in the top three so I exited the stage where I received a certificate and a
I quickly moved from the door to First Sergeant Attaway’s room. I arrived there before anyone else did so I started to make my uniform cleaned up and spotless, along with going over the questions I thought might have been asked. There was plenty and I was not really prepared as I wanted to be, but I was going to do my best. Everyone else started to show up, putting on their uniforms or cleaning their uniforms. The judges walked in and we lead them to where First Sergeant was. We then sent everything we needed to the gymnasium we were going to be in. The flags, the harnesses, the rifles, the stands, everything we needed was right there. We then started off with a little talk from First Sergeant then we started off with the color guards. One with and one without a saber. We then moved into a group marching with and without rifles. After that were the questions, and then he flags. The flags have been the easiest part, since the whole group you were in, which was five people this year, were able to talk and help each other. We finally completed the day. None of us embarrassed ourselves and we made it out without anything awful happening. We put everything away and then talked about what happened at both the practices and the auditions. We were then finally able to go
I couldn’t keep the disappointment off of my face as I stared at his. We both waited for the scores to be posted, expecting the worse. As soon as we saw a judge tape up a sheet of paper, we ran over to the mass of competitors. We both quickly scanned the sheet and stopped when we saw our names next to the number eight. I couldn’t hold back the screamed that ripped out of me as we ran to the holding room for the skills section.
Andria, Bailey, Elizabeth, and I shuffled to the side of the mat to do the stunt again like we were asked to. As we got ready to do the stunt again we all tried to encourage one another to do their best. Coach watched us do the stunt and we were
It began by having me attend every class the week of the test, writing a one thousand word essay, and taking a written exam the night before. The evening of Friday, around six o'clock, began the physical portion of the test by running ten laps around the Bryan Courthouse, totaling two miles, and ending that day with a ten minute horse stance. Lasting three and a half hours, everything else in between was purely physical and a "warmup" for the main event of testing on Saturday. We were questioned that Friday on why we were doing this and what for. My answer, unlike some, was to learn more so I could teach and help the ranks lower than me strive to become one of the black belts. We ended the night by having Sensei, Steven Franz, take us and our families out to dinner at Four Seasons across the street. I had very little to eat, as I was obviously fearing even more greatly the next painful day to
My most significant learning experience this month included becoming familiar with facilitating a group that is not psychoeducational. One group that I recently started facilitating requires more preparation than the previous psychoeducational group I had grown accustomed to. On February 10, 2016, I started facilitating a new group and during this group, participants are expecting me to have the answers to specific questions they have. Through facilitating this group, I have had the opportunity to understand the true essence surrounding of group dynamics I have learned that each group facilitator has a different style of leading, and each participant has different elements they bring to the group as well. In addition, it is beneficial to grow professionally and have new responsibilities within an agency.
Hearing the sounds of people breaking in half a wooden slab with their feet and cries being shouted out, I hesitantly entered the Dojo, placing my sandals in a cabinet. Dreading the smell of feet and sweat I didn’t enjoy coming. Not only was the smell bad but the physicality that was required was discomforting. The hits that my back and ribs received from missed side-kicks and jabs was unbearable.
Have you ever heard of the cub pilot? Well I learned a similar lesson in a different way. It was the first time I had ever taken a karate test.
Many people in history, as well as my mentors, have influenced my personal learning philosophy about early childhood learning.
Teaching and Learning consists of various different theories that educators may or may not feel applicable to their individual philosophy. There are bits and pieces of a variety of theories that many educators feel are important in the classroom. The purpose of this paper is to explain the personal learning theory and how it is applied in a classroom. After an educator takes the time to research and do further learning by reading a variety of written books, the educator may or maynot change things in the classroom or focus on a different topic that they had not previously focused on in the past.
Describe briefly how any idea from the article relates to a specific learning-related event or experience you had last term.
Since I was a young girl, learning was something necessary to do in order to mature into my own self. It's something us as humans do to evolve from our younger selves. From learning to talk, walk ,and read we learn many things throughout our lifetime to be the person we are today. Learning is the key to life. Learning makes us progress. Riding a bicycle was a learning experience that I might never forget it.
Participations in small in-class groups which purpose was to accomplish a task assigned to us by our Professor, were the most powerful learning experiences for me. In developing common focus, as stated in Gitterman and Germain (2008), members need to establish group rules and also remember to “build on one another’s contributions, identify and focus on salient collective themes, invite expression of differences” (p. 174), as well as welcome opinions which are contradictory or different from the majority.
In the reading Experiential Learning: Experience as the Source of Learning and Development by David Kolb (1984), he proposed that learning is a cycle process in which individuals learn through their own experiences in life. This notion of the learning cycle in which he was influenced by the ideas of three other theorists (Piaget, Dewey, and Lewinian) called it Experiential Learning Theory. Kolb’s theory was based on how people learned by imputing information and processing the information. Within this two abilities, there are four steps in which Kolb’s believe the learning process occurs. The first one he calls “concrete experience”, in which one actually does the learning right then and now. The second one is “reflective observation” when the learner thinks about what they did as a reflection of the experience. The next step is the “abstract conceptualization”, where the learner makes a generalization of the experience. The last step is “active experimentation”, where the learner puts to practice his/her understanding and adapts to it. The learner does this by taking all the first three steps of the learning cycle and seeing the results (pg. 30). Learning is a process in which individuals learn through trial and error. This process can then be reused with our prior experience to strengthen the outcome of our first experience. It is shaped as a cycle in the way we process information cognitively. This is how I understood of the reading on Kolb’s Experiential Learning Theory.
The learning experience should be that of a collective nature where students are able to indiscriminately relate to the information, re-teach the information and have a balanced incorporation of all the learning centers in society; including the home and the church. The goal of this incorporation is to create a balanced learning environment that facilitates holistic development in the young mind. As professionals entrusted with the shaping of young minds, teachers must facilitate learning and personal, spiritual, ethical and academic development. My philosophy for education is a multi-part philosophy that encapsulates the idea of holistic and inclusive learning. The philosophy caters for the overall shaping and development of the young mind and includes aspects of balanced training, incorporated teachings and it generally focuses on training students to become teachers.
