There are many heroes throughout history that are above average for what they do either for someone or for their attributes that help them have courage on the battle field. Some of my favorite heroes come from ancient Greece and Rome. The reason these types of heroes are my favorite is because not only do they show courage on the battlefield, but they also are good negotiators so that they can save lives from going to Elysium where they tend to live a happy and joyful life for those who were blessed by the gods and were heroic. There are four heroes that I am going to talk about in this paper. They range from Beowulf, which is Old Danish folklore to Achilles, which symbolizes an old Greek myth about being unstoppable in power. Then I …show more content…
Another way Beowulf is a hero is when Grendal’s Mother kills Eschere and Beowulf goes and avenges the death of the kings prized fighter.
Beowulf did many amazing things in his life that made him a hero. Not just in battle, but also with the citizens in the kingdom where he reigned. Those acts were consisting of slaying Grendal and his mother. As well as slaying a dragon that was terrorizing his kingdom even after it leaves him mortally wounded. His acts to the citizens included helping another king when the time came as well as when Beowulf protected his people from the dragon.
There is another hero that is part of society that shows courage and bravery in many forms that are required for a hero. The next person I am talking about is Achilles. Now Achilles belongs to another part of the old world, I am talking about Ancient Greece. Achilles did many amazing things that named him one of the greatest mystical heroes for ancient Greece.
The story of Achilles starts when he was supposedly born in the 1st century AD. The legend goes that Achilles was a half-blood, which back in those times meant half human and half god. It was said that when Achilles was a baby, he was dipped in the River Styx to try to make him immortal, but there is a disadvantage, you had to be connected on to your life line which is on a single part of your body. This part keeps you connected to the mortal world while the rest of your body wasted away.
There are many characteristics that Achilles
Taylor DavisKathleen Orfanedes8 Feb. 2018Is Beowulf a Hero? I would consider a hero as someone who being very brave, loyal, one who never gives up, and one who protects or saves others. I believe Beowulf has all of these traits. Beowulf is a hero because he fought off a lot of people for a town of people he did not even know and had never even met. He even came across the seas for them. He is very loyal because he was willing to risk his life for Hrothgar’s people day in and day out. Due to Beowulf’s loyalty, super strength and bravery to come fight off people, many people would say he was a hero. Beowulf is loyal because he did not even hesitate to go fight a huge monster that nobody thought he had a chance against. He went across the sea to a new country and knew nobody there and went to go save all of their lives just
Beowulf is a hero because of his actions in the novel. Heroic traits includes determination, physical strength, courage, loyalty, and leadership, which Beowulf demonstrated throughout the story. A quote from Beowulf shows an example of his determination, “…Fought with fate against him, with glory/ Denied him. He knew it, but he raised his sword/ And struck at the dragon’s scaly hide,” (Beowulf-Translator). Beowulf realized that there was a chance he would not win the battle, however his determination did not stop him from trying. Another quote from Beowulf shows his courage, “Alone shall fight for me, struggle for life/ Against the monster,” (Beowulf- Translator). Beowulf fought against Grendel without any weapons, just his
Beowulf is from a time where heros never die. They would live on through stories. There would be amazing tales, poems recited, and songs sung about what the hero had done. To be a hero you had to follow the Anglo-Saxon codes. Which meant showing respect to those who had raised you and in turn helping them when they are in need. It means proving yourself and doing what was expected of you, even when it is something like dieing for your people. To live on through stories, Beowulf fought because of his duty, for glory, and as a sacrifice.
The next example of Beowulf being a hero, are his acts of friendship. Beowulf is able to relate to the people more through his friendship. He shows this when he talks to the king and the king says, “Beowulf you’ve come to us in friendship, and because of the reception your father found at our court” (Beowulf 222-223). This shows that the king was very grateful that Beouwlf made the journey and as a result the king saw Beowulf as a great friend. Beowulf shows his trait of friendship by coming to save the people of Hrothgar even though he did not have to. He wanted to because the people of Hrothgar are his friends and wanted to get rid of Grendel. All of these characteristics and examples show that Beowulf is a true hero by showing his trait of friendship.
As Beowulf lies at rest, the question must be asked. Was he a true hero? Wanting only to help the towns people and keep them safe? Or just a mighty man wanting to be king, loathed in fame and riches? That is something that may always stay
Beowulf, an epic hero, is significant and glorified because of the heroic endeavors that he performs in. The poem stated, "They extolled his heroic nature and exploits and gave thanks for his greatness, which was the proper thing for a man should praise a price whom he holds dear and cherish his memory..." (II. 442-445). After defeating both Grendel and Gendel 's mother Beowulf was praised for it and defined as a true hero. The character, Beowulf, terminated a dragon who was woken by a goblet and was later wounded, threatening his life. For his everlasting bravery, the people of Geats and Danes admired him for his superhuman actions. Beowulf was noble to his people, so everyone set him out to be a
When labeling a hero, society seeks out certain traits or variables they find important to fulfill this job. “We look not only to public figures, but we look more broadly across culture, for the kind of values that we think are important during a time of crisis” (Cannon). The modern day hero has evolved based on the needs of the people of the time. For example, in the year 1200, war was fought by man-to-man combat resulting in great warriors to be viewed as heroes. However, in today’s society, the requirement of a hero has changed. We depict them based on the lives they have saved and how they have accomplished that deed. Many times, martyrs are considered heroes because they have died for the people they have protected, but not all heroes come face to face with war. They may be off site hidden from the battle grounds, while still fighting for our lives. Two outstanding heroes in history are Beowulf, King of the Danes, and Achilles, an important warrior in the Trojan
Beowulf should be considered a hero because he killed 2 monster and later on as king of the Danes he killed a dragon.
“We look not only to public figures, but we look more broadly, across the culture, for the kind of values that we think are important during a time of crisis” (Cannon). The heroes in today’s world are quite different from those of the past and those of the future. Currently, a hero could be anyone you look up to for both the right and wrong reasons, whereas formerly, heroes were people who were looked up to due to their miraculous actions. Along with this, most of our heroes today are unsung and anonymous, unlike in the past. Beowulf was the greatest hero of his time, and so was Achilles. Beowulf was a respectable, brave, and loyal man who is important for the reason that he saved Hrothgar’s kingdom from the monster Grendel, and Grendel’s mother. Achilles on the other hand was fearless, motivated, and a risk taker while fighting in the battle for what he believed in. Both leaders have heroic traits, but they vary
Beowulf embodies the Anglo-Saxon concept of a hero by taking and accepting all challenges. In the text it states, " My job is to watch the waves of the raider, any danger to Danish shore." (Beowulf, pg 19.) We can see how Beowulf treats his heroism as his priority. Also, Beowulf has a lot of strength, making him the best to defeat the evil.
Heroism in Greek mythology has slowly amended over the centuries and this leads to our modern day heroism. Many heroes in Greek mythology have shown to have unique abilities, but this writing isn’t about that. These heroes have many similar characteristics as our modern day heroes. I want to inform to whoever reads this, about the differences between our modern heroes with the heroes of Greek mythology. Each perspective is different from one another,so I may not be wrong or right.
People see him as a hero before he ever does anything heroic. Beowulf in Grendel is no hero regardless of the outcome of his actions, for they stand with all the wrong intentions behind them.
The word heroism brings to mind different things to different people. This is because people tend to have different concepts of heroism and what it means. The definition of heroism has changed a lot since ancient times and will continue to change. Despite these changes, there are a few things about heroes that will never change. A hero can be described as a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. Both ancient and modern day heroes are idealized for possessing these traits. Heroes, no matter from what time period, will always be powerful, strong, brave, and valued.
Society a hero had many defying qualities. A hero had to be of noble blood. He had to be loyal, brave, have supernatural strength, and the desire to do well no matter the risk against their life. Beowulf showed his loyalty and desire to risk his life for
Therefore heros today like there are firefighter, paramedics and other first call to an accident. Heroes today help other people not themselves. Unlike greek heroes they only thought for themselves and not other people.
