My Hero: The Dungeon Quest

Labyrinth is an adventure musical fantasy film about a young girl’s journey to rescue her baby brother. Jennifer Connelly plays Sarah Williams, a young girl with an active imagination stuck in the twilight time of a girl becoming a woman. Trapped at home while her brother, Toby, cries endlessly, Sarah says, “I wish the goblins would take you away right now.” To her astonishment, David Bowie’s character, Goblin King Jareth, grants her wish and whisks the babe away to his magical realm. Sarah immediately regrets what was said but can not take it back. Jareth makes a deal with Sarah. If she solves the labyrinth in 13 hours, then she may have her brother back. If she fails to reach the goblin castle and win her brother back within the bargained

The Hero’s Journey can be found in various films including “Big Hero 6”. If you have already seen this movie then you will know how Hiro, our main character, progresses throughout the 12 stages of the hero’s journey. In this movie Big Hero 6, Hiro Hamada shows what it means to be an epic hero throughout his journey with his diverse group of friends to save his world. In Hiro’s ordinary world, Hiro, who graduated from high school at 13 and is very smart, bot fights in a dark alley.

Within any story, the hero must contain three integral qualities: he or she must be the apparent protagonist of the novel, he or she must commit oneself to noble qualities and doings without exception, and he or she must be figuratively or literally invisible.

Yet for many mermaids swim their thoughts, princesses get swept of their feet, and lions roar to their loyal place in the animal kingdom. There is no doubt that today’s entertainment has most of its touch using classical influences. Walt Disney has produced animated films that have captured the heart and imagination of audiences of all ages around the world through the magic of storytelling and imagery. Many of us appreciate the imagination and magic that Disney puts into its animations with out knowing they are based off of classical and traditional storylines

“A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself.”(Joseph Campbell). Joseph Campbell showed how important hero’s are by creating the Hero’s Journey and that you can be a hero just through writing and showing it through different characters. A hero shows that you can help other people to make the world better

In 2014, I attended the Hero's journey summer program in hope to discover myself and to become a better man. My father who has attended the program many of times introduced me to the foundation and thought I should give it a try under the Young Men’s program with 8 other teens from around the world. Nervous but also excited about discovering who I truly was and what brotherhood really meant I found myself becoming the best of friends with these guys for 7 days. During the trip I learned that in relationships it is not only about how much you have in common, but that you trust each other and can work together as one. I could not tell you those guys last name or their favorite video game but I can tell you that I knew they had my back no matter what.

I decided to go through the front door and I saw my mom Neith and my dad Ra in the kitchen making some Konafah. He went to his room and he saw my brother on his way, Ramses was in his room working on a new design to help out our parents.

There I was sitting at the table eating what the nuns like to call food what just looked like to me slop I was sitting with my friend Felix. He came across a carrot and it was a full-size carrot he just sat there and stared at it not even touching it if he did not hurry up and I was going to grab it and eat it.

The Hero’s journey, or in its more correct terminology the Monomyth is an object from the area of comparative mythology. Its definition in the most basic of forms, it is a pattern or outline that is used in storytelling, usually the myth. This pattern is found in many famous pieces from all around the world. In the book The Hero with a Thousand Faces from 1949 by author Joseph Campbell, this pattern is described in detail. Campbell describes that numerous myths from different times and areas of the world seem to share an identical structure in their storytelling. He summarized this with a well-known quote found at the intro of his book:

Throughout the history of epic literature, heroes have been an integral part of many different cultures. Some of these heroes are fierce and powerful, renowned for their skill in battle, while some others and clever and cunning, able to talk their way out of any difficult situation. These traits usually emphasize the values of the cultural from which the hero came, and depending on the culture,traits viewed as heroic may drastically differ. Although there exists a plethora of traits any one hero may have, there are three core characteristic that, in my opinion, a hero must have to be considered a hero: the courage to face hardships, the willingness to make major self-sacrifices for the benefit of others, and most importantly, the dedication to do what it takes to reach their goal.

Heroes are prevalent in everyone’s life. Whether someone’s hero is a living person or a fabled character from a movie, everybody has come into contact with some sort of hero. In fact, the concept of heroes has existed for hundreds of years, dating all the way back to Ancient Greece. Over time, heroes have drastically changed. As society has evolved, our heroes have evolved with it. Their goals and motivations have changed to coincide with the views of modern society. Modern day heroes have less selfish motives, better qualities, and are portrayed differently than ancient heroes.

Sunday mornings, with the sun shining through your garage window, as sweat drips down your face and gets into your eyes. Grease on your hands, spending time with your’e  car and what your making it become. That's what a car enthusiast fenes for. Spending time with your pops, problem solving, working hard together and bonding. Or maybe you're with some of your buddies who are also into cars. Teaming up too break nuts loose, or putting the car back together to witness the end result of what you all accomplished. It's all an art form, and to the average person it just sounds like hard work, and they're right it is. Therefore for us car guys, it's something much more than that.
