What would life be without the people who love you surrounding you at the greatest moments in life? What would life be with only one chance to make everything perfect? In the novel The Summer My Life Began written by Shannon Greenland, we find many themes within the depth of the covers. However, two in particular stand out to me, they are, everyone deserves a second chance and family is forever. In this book, Elizabeth Margaret--better known as Em--, the protagonist, pretty much has her life planned out ahead of her by her strict, serious parents. That is until she gets the chance to visit her Aunt Tilly, who has been hidden from her all her life, for the summer. When she takes up this offer, she learns a lot about herself and her family. Everyone deserves someone to love and care for. This is why it is important to keep family close because family is forever. We can clearly see the theme family is forever throughout the novel, and especially on page 12 when it says, “ ‘No she does not want to visit her aunt for the summer,’ my mom answer for me. ‘She has an internship at the firm.’” We can see this theme displayed, because Em’s mom answers for her, which proves that she doesn’t trust her decisions, and just assumes what she really wants to do. If she were to let Em answer the question, we would see a little more respect for Em, and we would see how they are a good trusting family. However, Em’s mom doesn’t seem to understand how important family is, and how they are forever, and this is why Em and her sister aren’t very close to the rest of the family. Also, we can pick out this theme again on page 217 when it reads, “She hugged me snug against her as if she hadn’t been hugged in years. It was hard to believe that as of yesterday I had been lied to all of my life, my aunt was my mother and my mother was my aunt. ‘I’m sorry,’ I started, ‘for being so immature yesterday, I know how hard telling me must have been.’ ” We can see the family is forever theme clearly weaved in these words because after Em finds out that her Aunt Tilly is actually her mother, she gets away from everything for a day or two. However, when Em comes back and reunites …show more content…
These themes weave perfectly into the plot and complement the character traits. As the book goes on, we see how second chances impact the relationships the characters have with each other, and with family is forever, we see how important it is to care for others. These themes are very important life messages that I will live by for the rest of my life, and I will feel satisfied when I take the themes right to the
In these four chapters there is important theme that stood out to me and how it made a more important meaning in their respective chapter. The three themes is sorrow, regret, and overcoming that was very important for the soldiers to feel to move on in life.
The first theme, war cannot change who a person really is at their core. Throughout the book there were several incidences where this theme was important, such as when Ben tries to make Ringer smile despite being in the middle of the end of the world, when Cassie and Sammy reunite, he goes back to his five year old self even though he was in boot camp for months, and lastly Cassie and Evan flirt
I would choose this theme over any other countless themes since Dallas and Florida, “The Trouble Twins” of the Boxton Creek Home have been searching for a family for 13 years, only to end up depending on each other, and not letting anyone in, both emotionally and socially. Well, that was until Sairy and Tiller took them under their wing, as their own-birth children. Tiller and Sairy have made a parental bond with “The Trouble Twins” and Dallas and Florida created a daughter and son bond with “the old couple.” Along with the importance of family, Trust was also another major theme in the book. Florida and Dallas have been through so much since they passed along to different foster parents, from being locked in basements to hours of hard labor. They were never able to witness what it would be like to acquire loving parents, so they could never trust anyone, even if they really wanted
Two Themes- The first theme in my book trailer is, “Losing someone close to you can be hard.” As humans, we all struggle when we lose someone or something we love. It takes us awhile to move on but each and every day it ends up being a little better. Oakley went through this in my book she lost her brother which was also her best friend. For Oakley, it took her a long time to move on and be happy again. The second theme in my book trailer is, “ The love for your family helps you.” When you go through hard times your
Also another theme would be about money because in the story as you can see Walter needs the money to open up his liquor store and Beneatha needs the money to go to college, and Mama who want to buy a house instead of living in a place where it’s so small and having to share a bathroom with the neighbors.this all shows money problem, each of them has a dream they want to achievel but they can’t, just like how Beneaths dream was to become a doctor but it’s not going to happen because they lost the money.
The array of themes lead to the idea of female independence and individuality. Throughout the novel, the themes of identity, feminism, and marriage and love come together to empower women and give them a
There are different themes focusing on the book, they give to the plot and development of the characters. The themes that were introduced include the power of friendship, let go of the past and believe in the bright side of life. In the book, the relationship between main character Sally and her friend Brydan is mentionable. It displayed that a true friend will always be there for you no matter what happens. Secondly, the theme, learn how to move on from the past is showed from the conflict in Sally’s family. “‘We all lie’, said Dusty, ‘to stop the hurt from
How do these themes apply to your life? What is the author saying about the subject matter?
The theme in a story contributes to the overall message the piece is trying to convey. The author can include thematic aspects in many different areas within their work to tie even the smallest of details to the theme. The character’s name in the story of “A Worn Path” is a great example of the theme being represented by character’s name and the traits it represents. The theme of “A Worn Path” is that love and persistence will endure (Kirszner & Mandell, 2012) all struggles and the age of time. The narrator is careful to use the elements of symbolism, changes in the main character, and the events in the story to remain true to the theme of love and persistence.
1 example is when they find out a way to escape. When they start to find out some things out about a camp, they find out something. They think that their parents is somehow can send things to the camp to help them escape. If they can put the things together they can find a way to escape. It supports the theme because they have hope to escape. They believe that they can escape and they have a little hope and they need hope to help them get out of Camp Kendle.
The theme is revealed very well by reading the book not outright said by one of the characters. This is an interesting thing about the book making you want to read
To begin with, one major theme that continuously played a part throughout the entire book is sadness. The main character, Sal, see that sadness is everywhere in America. It occurs to him in his dreams, in the people he meets, and in the places that he goes.
The theme of this book for me is Family and survival. I think that these are the themes of the book because it is talking a lot a bout the family. I think that this book is all about survival because it is teaching us a life skill that we should learn and the author does not tell us. And that is how Ms. Puente told us that a theme can only be a theme if it is teaching you a life lesson and survival is a life lesson that we should learn. And we could use the theme for our life we can learn how to survive in really difficult occasions. And family and survival can be a theme because it is something that the author has not talked about at all it is just showing it but not saying that the theme is family and survival.
The orientation of the story around the family produces the theme of the novel, that inner demons and fears can destroy us. There are many passages that demonstrate this theme throughout the novel, and prove that it is the most prevalent theme. This plot is similar to the plots of many of
The central theme of the plot is survival. The characters learn to adapt to their surroundings. Through each there is a different outcome. Yet the characters try to stay sane throughout the novel.
