My journalistic experience has been a learning experience that I have enjoyed. I have been in convergence media for my school for two years, and I don’t regret it at all. If it wasn’t for Ms. Roni Henderson, I would have never discovered what I want to do in life, as quickly as I did. My goals for the future, is to become a video editor for sports(ESPN) or the news. I want to gain so much knowledge that I learn how to expand what I can do to for the whole world to see. Activities I have done in high school includes: Student Government, Cat program(engineering program), Honors English (9th grade), Track, Church League Basketball two years(champions 2 years), bronze on workkeys test, convergence media award, participated in news show events,
In the city of Los Angeles is Fremont High School, and unlike most schools in the country, this one runs on a three-track schedule, meaning that it is open year round with short numerous breaks throughout the year. The school contains 3,300 students in attendance year round and being that the school is lacking in funds and hindering the students from following their dreams, this is very impactful on a large amount of people beause it lacks also preparation for college. In the article, “Fremont High School”, Jonathan Kozol examines the conditions of Fremont High School from the perspective of the students, and teachers alike. He uses statistics that have been submitted to the courts during depositions and student recounts of activity. Jonathan Kozol uses persuasive techniques such as ethos, logos, and pathos in the article, “Fremont High School”, to persuade the audience, members of society, that they can help by providing funds, because of the lack of funding it has caused a disservice to the students, causing students to struggle with following their dreams.

Nowadays it seems there is a constant riff between those who love social media and those who do not; usually between older and younger generations. The classroom, emblematic of this struggle, is where the appropriateness of social media comes into question. Jane Mathison Fife, a professor at Western Kentucky University wrote, “Using Facebook to Teach Rhetorical Analysis,” in Pedagogy argues that frequent Facebook users have strong classical rhetorical analytical skills relating to Ethos, Logos and Pathos. Rhetorical analytical elements were originally described by Aristotle as the writer’s credibility being ethos, an appeal to emotion being pathos and evidence and reason as logos. Like most successful authors, Fife employs the use of rhetorical elements. Throughout the article, she excels in establishing pathos during the beginning of her paper which helps her connect with the audience and establish a good ethos; however, she falls short in building logos as her paper lacks organization and using evidence from familiar sources.
In his article “If Technology Is Making Us Stupid, It’s Not Technology’s Fault,” David Theo Goldberg effectively informs the reader about the effects that computers in the home and school environment could have on the future education of the coming generations. Goldberg achieves this by executing defined organization and adding unique comparisons about the potentially crippling effects technology can have on a society when put into the wrong hands.
In this lengthy article “Guns Don’t Kill People, the Mentally Ill Do,” that was published in the Townhall Daily, the author, Ann Coulter, argues about a major prevailing issue today, gun control. She believes the problem isn’t the guns themselves, but the mentally disturbed people. Coulter credits the declining mental health system as the main setback. She supports her argument by providing tragic examples from mass shootings that took place in the past. One example was the 2011 shooting that took place in Tucson, Arizona where the shopping mall shooter, Jared Loughner was so obviously disturbed that he stated “If I stay long enough to make the
In the past, I have done many research papers for science, history, and English classes. For my AP English classes, I learned how to identify rhetoric and analyze how it affects a piece of writing as a whole. In chemistry and biology classes, I researched a certain chemical reaction and wrote a paper on why that happens. In AP US History class I spent hours on learning how to write a grey area thesis and finding evidence to support both sides of an argument. A strength I have as a writer is that I have experience in doing research in most fields of study. I took various AP classes in high school and have written papers in most of them. A weakness that I have as a writer is the inability to use concise and precise diction. I feel as though I
The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass is an autobiography in which Mr. Douglass tells his life story. He was born into slavery and experienced many harsh realities that shaped his life. Frederick Douglass was a free black man at the time in which he told this story. He is writing to his audience to inform them about slavery. His claim is that slavery is bad and must be stopped. His experiences help form his rhetoric as a credible speaker; His use of pathos truly develops the negative emotional and physical aspects of slavery on slaves.
Transferring to California State University, Sacramento was the most optimal decision that I have made recently this year and so far, it has been an enjoyable yet compelling one because of the helpful environment around me. Compared to the other two colleges I attended in the past in Stockton, California, I believe Sacramento State University has better resources and opportunities to grow as a student. Some of the resources I have utilized here are the Writing Center and PARC, but I plan to branch out and explore many others I have heard about. Although my major is Mechanical Engineering, I still have other classes that I am required to take in order graduate in Spring of 2020, such as English 109W for my undergraduate GWAR. Before entering English 109W, my mind was set on just completing the course and getting a good enough grade to move on to my Writing Intensive course, the last English class I would take in college. I thought that my writing skills were above
In issue three of writing identities, we have learned that tone shifts or changes in different rhetorical situations. A rhetorical situation is basically an event that consists of at least one person trying to change the perspective of another person. Looking at the definition, is it true that the tone changes in different rhetorical situations, depending on what is happening and what is being discussed in that period of time.
This year I got a chance to be on a team of four undergraduate students to represent UBC at Intercollegiate Animal Welfare Competition at Ohio State University. The competition is in November and we are raising funds to help us get there.
As supported by Jay Heinrichs in his book, Thank you For Arguing, rhetoric being a vital skill later in life,. Rhetoric is an important skill because use could become a constant in our lives. A vast array of rhetorical skills can help a student obtain and keep a job once they land in the working world. Therefore, a keen eye and ear for rhetoric can be an invaluable tool in obtaining one’s goals in life.
Effective rhetoric is essential in order to properly communicate whatever message one may be trying to share. Rhetoric is considered effective if it attracts an audience and aligns their opinion with the message you are giving. In our groups case the message we are trying to share is attempting to unite the student body and the administration of the University of North Dakota and strengthen the communication between them. By doing research on the topic and releasing a communications plan on what we think can help alleviate the issue we hope to accomplish this goal of unification. Being a part of this group I created two genres that were outlined in the communications plan and by using different forms of rhetoric I hope to be successful in bridging
In ‘An Overview of Rhetoric’, Herrick describes rhetorical discourse as being ‘situated’. That is, it derives from what Bitzer refers to as the ‘rhetorical situation’, which he defines as the set of circumstances producing a rhetorical discourse. While this definition may seem self evident, with reference to the work of Vatz, it draws and important distinction. While Bitzer asserts that it is the rhetorical situation which produces rhetorical discourse, Vatz argues instead that it is rhetorical discourse which constructs the rhetorical situation. In other words, the rhetorical situation is a manifestation of rhetoric than rather its impetus, the implication of this then being that rhetoric becomes merely a mode of representation rather than
As to the teaching at Grace, we see it's current condition as the result of men filling a role that they are neither gifted for nor received a call by God's people to fill; coupled with the neglecting of seeking out a pastor but rather choosing to be a self-shepherding flock, and so deprive ourselves off the blessing of obedience to God in that area and working of His Spirit amongst us through a pastor. It is this seeming deliberate absence of a pastor that prompts us to visit other assemblies of God's people.
Rhetoric is a course in which students are taught the values of persuasion. And yet, behind this course is the utmost power to corrupt the world, changing it into a world of our own policies. This power, even though seldom discussed, has lead to many intriguing discoveries. One such discovery is how people are able to shape the world they live in simply by choosing the right words. Therefore those who would want the world to be a better place must protect this power. If in the wrong hands this power could cause serious damage. Several authors have striven to protect rhetoric and its power. Few agree on the matter of defining rhetoric, but they know that they must protect rhetoric from dark souls. A single definition of rhetoric must maintain a simplistic nature while incorporating every aspect of rhetoric. However, I argue that rhetoric is a means of persuading audiences of a situation and a particular reality through language and personal appeal. In order to prove this definition I will discuss how rhetoric creates a situation, the shaping of a different reality, the audience, the use of language, and the personal appeal. Finally, I will demonstrate the absolute need for rhetoric.
