The European Colonization of the Americas initiated in 1492 when Spanish explorer and navigator, Christopher Columbus sailed the sea to the New World. Their main motivation was to probe new trade routes, spread Catholicism and earn recognition and stardom for discoveries made similar to the findings that came from the conquest of the Aztecs and Incas. The English then established permanent settlement in the New World and interacted with the indigenous people that were already living there. This was found to have a detrimental effect on the Native Americans because Europeans brought dangerous diseases such as smallpox to the Americas. Also, natives were imperialized, forced to give up their vibrant culture and take up the lifestyle of the Spaniards.

While we can’t deny the fact that the Columbian Exchange had a lasting impact on the New World, many of its effects were negative rather than positive. The introduction of European diseases devastated the Native American population, along with the terrible conditions they were forced to live in. Additionally, the Europeans did not treat the Native tribes as people, but rather as savages who could be used for labor.

Native Americans had inherited the land now called America and eventually their lives were destroyed due to European Colonization. When the Europeans arrived and settled, they changed the Native American way of life for the worst. These changes were caused by a number of factors including disease, loss of land, attempts to export religion, and laws, which violated Native American culture.

From all that Native Americans onced lived all over the West were now living on reservations. The Natives suffered at the Sand Creek massacre, which killed over 200 Native Americans. Also another battle that affected the Native Americans negatively was the Battle of Little Bighorn. The Europeans encountered many sophisticated Indian cultures and some owe their survival to the Natives. The Europeans introduced the idea of “ownership of the land” to the Indians. Of course, tribes fought over territory to hunt, fish and occasionally practice agricultural on, but the idea of “ownership” of land was something they didn't comprehend. For some Indians the land was considered sacred, the idea of agriculture was thought of as insulting to the Earth, and many aspects of nature. For the Indians, things in nature like rivers, ponds, and even rocks, were like the saints in Christian cultures. Even after they had made deals with the Europeans for the purchase of land, they didn't understand what they had done and that led to further conflict. Europeans also changed their barter system. They had built complex economic relationships with other tribes and understood commerce as it existed in their barter and exchange system. Europeans had a destructive impact of this trading culture, trading different things than the Indians were used to and also through the use of currency.

The exploration and settlement of the Americas by the Europeans had devastating effects on the Native Americans. As Europeans began to explore the Americas and form settlements a great majority of them saw the Native Americans as savages and pagans that needed to be civilized. As exploration and settlements expanded the Native American population and culture was decimated by disease, war, loss of land, the exploitation internal feuding among the tribes and enslavement.

The exploration of the Europeans to the west changed the civilization in the Americas. A main staple in the settling of the newcomers was the relationships that the Europeans had formed with the foreign Native Americans. These would end up turning sour because of expansionism, intolerance for the native culture, and new diseases that the Indians had never been exposed to. The relationships not lasting can be most clearly seen between the Europeans and the Native Americas in New England, and the Spanish southwest.
