Setting
1. The Setting of the book Native Son takes place in southern parts of Chicago in the early 1900’s. The setting is known because the main character has talked about many places in Chicago and it is a time where black people are not treated equally in America.
2. The setting is extremely important because it shapes the Main characters way of thinking and why he does certain actions during the book. The
Setting is very important because without the setting there is no initial story. As a reader a person cannot read a story without it having some sort of time frame or having a reference to where the story took place. The setting also shows that the characters in this story have to undergo different problems than other people in the world for example, “…complaining about the drought
Setting has a major impact on a story; it sets the theme and mood or feeling.
1. What do you find is the most crucial in the plot in Chapter 1?
The settings are used appropriately to the characters. For example the Hamilton’s land is completely dry of any water, but Samuel is one the kindest man in the county. Adam Trask’s land is full of water, but goes through a rough time and does become depressed for a time. Also for Cathy as it describes the different places where she goes that reflect her strange and manipulative personality. All of these settings help you see the difference between good and evil. The rooms in which certain things take place help add to the effect for certain events.
Setting is where a story take place. It's important because it makes conflicts possible, and moves the plot forward. Setting influences conflict, and conflict impacts the character causing plot progression. For example in Tangerine, because Tangerine has lightning strikes, muck fires, and sinkholes this has caused a lot of conflict that changed characters, and developed the plot, which impacts the novel. Setting in a piece of literature impact the overall experience a reader has with literature, and if the story took place elsewhere then the whole story would be different since characters would respond differently. For example, to me the setting in Tangerine impacted my experience since knowing the place I could predict would could possibly
In chapters 1-14 of the autobiography Black Boy by Richard Wright, the story takes place in the Jim Crow American south. Richard grows up with a father who soon abandons him and strict, religious elders. His family is overcome by poverty, so Richard struggles with both figurative and literal hunger. As he grows up, he moves around to different places with family and realizes the harsh meaning of race. He finds himself working for white people and discovers a lot more about his personality in the process. Luckily, Richard is intelligent and is able to move to Memphis where he has more freedom. There, he makes plans to travel north to Chicago.
The setting can affect the character by putting the character in a place where he or she is less comfortable with. This can affect them by having to face more struggles throughout the book. Also, it can cause them to become more comfortable with change as the novel progresses. This setting can also impact the main character because if the setting is not well chosen then the book will not turn out how the author probably planned. By this I mean, it can affect the plot, theme, and conflicts in the book. Conflicts can occur with the setting if the story does not line up. Finally, the novel’s setting contributes to the conflicts and problems that occur within the characters lives . With the setting the character may interfere with problems along
One of the first ways that the setting has an impact involves the character. For example, early in his trip the man realized that he has misjudged how cold it
There are 2 ways to look at setting in the story, we can look it as a
B1 Create a new setting and describe how it would change either the plot, the characters or the mood of the story.
When choosing a setting, an author must consider an environment in which the characters would be well suited. The setting itself can determine the mood or tone of the story. Without settings, most literature would be descriptive dialogue. Settings can also give the reader an idea of the context of the reading. With the importance of settings, they can often have an abundance of symbolism along with them.
Native Son, by Richard Wright, explores racial prejudice in Southside Chicago in the 1930s from the life of Bigger Thomas. Bigger held a job of a Chauffeur to a rich white family; the Daltons. In merely a day, Bigger faced with Mary, a young white women, and Jan, a believer in Communism. From accidental actions, Bigger suffocates Mary, ending up killing her. From then on, his whole life revolved from running away from the police, or it means certain death for a black man. As he runs from his fate, his plans to make money from this disaster ruins him, to the point where he could no longer trust his own girlfriend; inevitably killing her. Reporters soon figured out the Bigger murderer, and so his life of running ended. Scared of white people
The setting in a book is so important it can make the plot more exciting or very long and dreary. The setting can make or break the characters in the book. When the author does not explain the setting every well it can make the reader confused as to what else is going on in the plot. In Cress there are examples of an exciting setting, how the characters develop, and how the great detail of the setting is explained.
5. State the setting and describe how the setting affects the plot and/or major theme.
Native Son is a fictional book written by Richard Wright and was published in 1940. To truly understand the meaning of a book, I believe it’s important to understand the author. Upon further research, Richard Wright was a black author with a fascinating past. He was born into extreme poverty in the southern state of Mississippi. At one brief point in his life, he was forced to stay in an orphanage and he even dropped out of high school. One of the most fascinating pieces of information that I learned about Richard Wright was that he was apart of the communist party before he began to write novels. Wright even wrote articles and stories for communist magazines. The book that I read, Native Son, was written with the help of the Guggenheim
