Head trauma from concussions can be extremely detrimental to a person’s body so that such things as death can occur. Everyone knows that concussions are not a good thing but not everyone knows how severe they actually are. Concussions are becoming an epidemic in sports and a solution should be drawn up to help the players in sporting activities. The public needs to be more aware of the severity that concussions provide to the body. The definition of a concussion is simple. A “concussion occurs whenever a child’s mental status changes as a result of trauma” (Concussions in). Trauma can come from a variety of instances, and of course none of them are good for the body. Sustaining a concussion can and will cause neurological problems that will hinder your body’s performance in the long run. For the “athletes who sustain concussions are tested again, typically within 48 hours of the injury at regular intervals afterward” they are in trouble (Concussions in). They have suffered a very severe injury that can hurt the way they live their lives. The tests at regular intervals will help them to remain steady and if anything is severely wrong the test should be able to see the problem. An article was talking about someone and it said “his son spent the following four months in rehabilitative therapy [from concussions]” and some people can spend more than that (Valentini). Obviously an injury that involves spending four months in rehabilitative therapy is going to be a severe injury, but most of the people would never even have the word concussion cross their mind when contemplating rehab. A concussion can be more severe than the public originally thinks. Multiple concussions can be much worse than a single one. “Cumulative sports concussions are shown to increase the likelihood of catastrophic head injury leading to permanent neurologic disability by 39 percent” (Sports). The more head injuries an individual suffers, the more severe the symptoms can become. Permanent brain damage would scare anyone, so something needs to be done about it.
