Social Media Affects Typewriters to computers, telephones to smartphones, written letters to communicating through social media such as snapchat and instagram, demonstrates how times have changed with communication. The earlier generations growing up had to use their imaginations and creative minds in order to be entertained. Playing outside with friends, building forts, and playing school were some of the many favorite activities of children. Today, you see smartphones in the hands of young children, changing children's ideas of fun. Now it is a struggle to find someone that is not a registered user of some type of social media website, such as snapchat, twitter, facebook, or instagram. A study from Nottingham Trent University, looked at earlier research of personality, psychological characteristics, and social media use. They found that the addiction behaviors are indeed there when it comes to social media. People tend to try to hide emotions through posting "happy all the time" pictures and it makes them feel much more safe. This created problems such as, feelings of neglecting personal life, mental preoccupation, mood modifying experiences, and much more (Walton). So as a result of so much technology and phone use, the generation has drastically changed. Mental Health To begin with, mental health can be greatly affected by social media. Mental health issues have gone up in the last century as the social media hype has grown. According to child psychotherapist Julie Lynn Evans, the rise in numbers of anorexia, cutting, and depression, all stem from the effect of social media (Liu). From all the pictures posted online, it can pop different thoughts into a person's head. Feeling left out, feeling like you and your life aren’t good enough, or comparison and jealousy are all things that come up when speaking of social media and mental health.
