It was a pleasant surprise seeing that NightCrawler was one of the film choices for this psychopathy paper, I saw it in theaters when it was originally released and it has been one of my all-time favorites ever since. Even after rewatching it countless times since, the movie still never fails to keep my attention. One thing is for sure, Jake Gyllenhaal’s character, Louis Bloom, is a bona fide psychopath. I will go into greater detail about the reasoning for this later, after discussing what exactly being a psychopath entails and the different traits that are used to characterize them. Believe it or not, many people in today’s society cannot really distinguish between the two terms, psychopath and sociopath. Back in the early 1800s, the doctors that were working with mental patients began to realize that some of their patients who appeared outwardly normal had what they termed a “moral depravity” or “moral insanity”. These patients seemed to have no sense of the rights of other people, or even of ethics in general. The term psychopath was initially applied to these individuals around the beginning of the twentieth century. In the 1930s, the term switched to sociopath to focus more heavily on the detrimental effect that these people can have on …show more content…
These items are as follows: glib and superficial charm, grandiose (exaggeratedly high) estimation of self, need for stimulation, pathological lying, cunning and manipulativeness, lack of remorse or guilt, shallow affect (superficial emotional responsiveness), callousness and lack of empathy, parasitic lifestyle, poor behavioral controls, sexual promiscuity, early behavior problems, lack of realistic long-term goals, impulsivity, irresponsibility, failure to accept responsibility for own actions, many short-term marital relationships, juvenile delinquency, revocation of conditional release, and criminal
A psychopath is a person that meets certain traits such as, showing no emotion, display of irresponsibility, and is developed by their sense of nature. In four articles, “What Is a Psychopath” (1) by William Hirstein, “Psychopathy: An Important Forensic Concept for the 21st Century”(2) by multiple authors, “Criminal Minds Are Different From Yours, Brain Scans Reveal” (3) by Clara Moskowitz, and “Jim Fallon: Exploring the mind of a killer” (4) by Jim Fallon, all have a common theme of a person can be deemed as a psychopath if they meet certain criteria for traits. Psychopaths are generally known to be “emotionally shallow” (1) and that they show a “lack [of] emotion” (3) meaning that they don’t appear to wear their hearts on their sleeve and
When most people hear the word psychopath their mind forms a picture of a wild-eyed, rambling, lunatic who is often restrained in a straitjacket. The media has helped this belief along the way with slasher horror films and grisly CSI episodes depict these strange humans. However, the average psychopath is much harder to spot than most people believe. In fact, most of them are extremely difficult to distinguish from ordinary humans. They outwardly appear normal and many do not find it difficult to blend into common society. They can interact with others, hold successful jobs, and effectively keep themselves out of trouble. Most are not the sadistic killers many people think they are. Psychopaths are people born with problems (Bartol 105) or

The 20 traits and behaviors that are assessed in the PCL-R are conning/manipulative, grandiose sense of self- worth, glibness/superficial charm, lack of remorse or guilt, lack of realistic, long-term goals, shallow affect, impulsivity, irresponsibility, pathological lying. As well as, failure to accept responsibility for ones own actions, revocation of conditional release, criminal versatility, parasitic life style, callous/lack of empathy, poor behavior controls, promiscuous sexual relations, early behavior problems, many short-term marital relationships, juvenile delinquency, and a need for stimulation/prone to boredom (Hare et al., 2006 p. 63).
One of Shakespeare’s most acclaimed works, Othello, delves into a wide range of themes. The play tackles issues of race, gender and encompasses ideas of jealousy and deceit. Shakespeare also brings to life a variety of well-constructed characters. Iago, the deceitful antagonist, can easily be identified as the liveliest and most complex character in the play. His devious nature raises the question of whether or not he is a sociopath. Sociopathy is a mental disorder in which an individual’s moral depravity poses a threat to society. The Psychopathy Checklist, commonly known as the PCL, constructed a list of criteria used to diagnose sociopaths. These criteria vary from irresponsibility
Psychopathy is a personality disorder defined with symptoms that include the inability to experience empathy or remorse, reduced concern for others and, antisocial behavior. Psychopaths are thought to be loners and antisocial but most psychopaths can appear successful and normal externally. Not all psychopaths grow into criminals or serial killers. An example of one of the psychopaths turned serial killer is Jeffrey Dahmer. Dahmer’s murders included violent sodomy, necrophilia, dismemberment, and cannibalism. As Dahmer committed his horrendous crimes he lacked remorse and acted on impulse, classic signs of psychopathy. Although it may seem obvious to some that the brain of a psychopath functions differently, one important question to ask is how exactly a psychopaths brain is different compared to a normal brain.
A psychopath is very reactive and will blow their cool because of little things and no doubt assault the person they are reacting to. The antisocial tends to have short lasting relationships if they are capable of having a relationship. The psychopathic incapable of having long lasting, close, warm and responsible relationships with people in many ways. The adult will habitually lie and cannot hold a job for long. The sociopath can seem charming in superficial social interactions but repeatedly hurt, anger, exploit, cheat, rob, harass or injure them. The actions a psychopath no matter what laws they break, whoever they hurt, whatever trouble they have to deal with they do not feel bad. When a sociopath is punished they have no feeling of regret because no matter how cruel or selfish the behavior is they feel it is justified. People like us give the sociopath little sympathy because they hurt people so bad, but their illness is recognized as somewhat of an explanation of why they do it. The idea of the disorder is no excuse for their behavior that results from it. The sociopath is very intelligent and knows how to manipulate people into thinking they are normal.
Society's view on psychopaths and sociopaths is highly influenced by movies, social media and even books. Often these two disorders are considered the same but in reality are completely different. Psychopaths and sociopath are integrated in society to a certain extent which leaves no true definition in a person's mind. They are very different but same in some similar aspects.
A psychopath is someone who is suffering from a chronic mental disorder with abnormal or violent social behavior. Much like a sociopath, who is someone with a personality disorder manifesting itself in extreme antisocial attitudes and behavior and a lack of conscience. A psychopath and a sociopath have many things in common about them. They also have a lot of differences as well. Both, psychopath and sociopath, are well-known disorders around the world.
The concept of psychopathy originated in the 1800s to describe individuals that consistently failed to conform to societal norms and exhibited antisocial behavior that did not fit the concept of mental illness of the time period. While, psychopathy was a common term used to describe individuals suffering from this disorder other descriptions were coined such as “Pinel’s term “manie sans delvie” meaning mania without delirium in the 1700s, to describe patents whose ‘affective faculties were disordered’” or Pritchard’s term “moral insanity” (Ogloff 520). In the 1930’s Partridge argued that psychopathy was a social rather than a mental disorder and proposed that the concept of sociopathy be introduced as a more accurate description. The American Psychological Association adopted Partridge’s term for their Diagnostic and Statistical Manuel in 1952. However, in 1968 the American Psychological Association changed the diagnostic label from sociopath to “personality disorder, antisocial” for the Diagnostic and Statistical Manuel – II that continued through to the DSM - III in 1980 and the DSM - III-R in 1987 and the DSM - IV in 1994. Today the Diagnostic and Statistical Manuel categorizes antisocial personality disorder as a personality disorder and it is named as such. Unfortunately, not much research has been conducted
In today's society it's very common to come across a movie featuring mentally unstable people. Hollywood portrays sociopaths and psychopaths as simply sick people. Many people don't even know the difference between the two and even believe they’re interchangeable. Others don't even know what a psychopath or a sociopath is. If you google what a sociopath is it tells you a person with a personality disorder manifesting itself in extreme antisocial attitudes and behavior and a lack of conscience. As for psychopath google says a person suffering from chronic mental disorder with abnormal or violent social behavior. People may not realize it but there's an extreme difference between the two.
Psychopaths are people who are classified as having a personality disorder and show signs of having anti social issues when dealing with large groups of people. The true definition of a psychopath has been debated but for know it is classified as “ entail persistent behavioral deviancy in the company of emotional-interpersonal detachment”(Christopher J. Patrick ). This means that psychopaths can “exhibited impulsively violent behavior while otherwise appearing sound in mind” (Christopher J. Patrick ). They do not exhibit any emotions when dealing with remorse or empathy.
Recent research into psychopathy in Britain and America have conducted studies from scientist who believe that they’re close to discovering the root cause of the condition. They are now able to look inside the brain of a psychopath. This discovery from scientist suggest that psychopaths are born not made. Their condition is the result of a specific malfunction of the brain. The complexity of psychopathy has made it difficult to treat. General public has a perception of psychopaths but are unaware that their psychopaths among them who are non-serial killers. One in every 200 of the population is psychopathic and the vast majority are neither criminal or in prison. Psychopathy who engage in crime,
Of all the psychiatric disorders, none are more chilling to the world then the psychopaths and sociopaths. These two disorders, categorized as antisocial personality disorders, bring about the absolute worse people and killers that the world has ever known. The infamous serial killers, the people who do the unimaginable, were all psychopaths. The ability of these people to do what they do and know that what they are doing is wrong, is perhaps one of the most chilling and shocking characteristic of these people. Psychopaths and sociopaths are very often thought by most to be the same disorder, yet they are different when classified by many psychiatric researchers. The people classified as psychopaths and sociopaths are separated by one main difference, and that is if they were born with a lack of the ability to empathize or if they were affected as children in a traumatic environment. Although both of these horrible disorders derive from a different area, the reality is that they are unpredictable, undetectable and most importantly, they can be very dangerous.
Criminal psychologist Roger Hare has compiled a checklist of traits that may or may not manifest themselves in psychopaths and sociopaths. Not all of them have to be present in order to determine if a person is psycho- or sociopathic. Both disorders are strongly marked by a propensity towards violence, lack of remorse, and indifference to ethics, laws, and others’ rights. They can be prone to boredom and engage in risky, impulsive behaviors in order to alleviate it. Behavioral issues may present themselves throughout childhood and adolescence.
“Psychopathy is a personality disorder characterized by an inability to form human attachment, aggressive narcissism, and antisocial behavior defined by a constellation of affective, interpersonal and behavioral characteristics, most of which society views as pejorative” [1]. Some of these characteristics include irresponsibility, grandiosity, cunning, deceitfulness, selective impulsivity, sexual promiscuity, lack of empathy, etc. People who are psychopathic display not only antisocial behavior but also emotional impairment such as the lack of guilt. They are able to prey on others using their charm, deceit, violence or any other methods that allow them to get what they want. A strong feature of most of the behavior
