The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) is ever evolving. It has continued to adapt in the world of healthcare which has transformed since its introduction in 2004 (1). A doctorate in nursing first began as a research-based has now evolved to include a focus on nursing practice (4). The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Position Statement on the Practicing Doctor of Nursing, October 2004 stated,
The term practice, specifically nursing practice, as conceptualized in this document refers to any form of nursing intervention that influences health care outcomes for individuals or populations, including the direct care of individual patients, management of care for individuals and populations, administration of nursing and health

I believed that five years reasonable length of time to develop and sharpen my skills, and I would be an experienced competent nurse. According to the Benner’s Nursing Theory, competent is a nurse that has work in the same area for two to three years that understands the long-term goals to achieve great efficiency and organization(4). Therefore, I have worked in area of medical cardiology with medical diagnosis consisting chest pain, myocardial infarctions, atrial fibrillation, and heart failure for five years. One of the unit’s goal is to provide adequate education to heart failure patients to reduce readmission. I have worked with the Clinical Nurse Specialist to educate nursing staff on the Heart Failure Pathway created to ensure adequate, effective treatment and education is delivered to heart failure patients. Thereby, reducing the probability of readmissions. I served a Unit Council Chair to help educated staff ways to reduce falls on the unit, assist with audits to retrieve unit data on adherence to hospital policies to reduce catheter associated urinary tract infections and hospital acquired pressure injuries. This experience along with obtaining a certification in Cardiac-Vascular Nursing made me a competent nurse now transitioning to level of …show more content…
The decision was confirmed by the APRN Consensus Model and algorithm in the American Nurses Association American Nurse Today January 2018 article. The algorithm was designed to help nurses select an area of advanced nursing practice concluding Family Nurse Practitioner for me. Although, this will challenge me to acquire additional skills in caring adolescents, I look forward to acquiring additional skills to provide a holistic care to individuals. The family environment is one area of the holistic approach that I hope to impact as FNP. Family members play an essential role in helping to improve individual healthcare. This was seen first
In the article written by Ford, (2009), the doctorate of nursing practice (DNP) has an important role to play in the current health care system which is constantly changing. As healthcare around the world is transforming, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) 2011 report mentioned that in the United States, Advanced practice nurses play a vital role in the rapid complex changes based on the full extent of their education and training. This article describes some of the positive role of the advance practice Nurse as a facilitator in the regulatory and policy developments. The Advance practice nurse participates and provide cost-effective care models that will improve the access and quality of care of the population. Another positive area for the APN in this current healthcare system is health promotion, health maintenance, and prevention. In this evolving health care system, it gives the Advance practice nurse the opportunity to set up acute and primary care settings that will positively impact health care delivery as they meet the needs of an expanding, aging, and chronically ill population. All over the world, the NP’s role has developed and is beneficial to health care systems and health care consumers. As Advance practice nurses we must use this great opportunity to advance our role and work with others to improve and transform health care globally. DNP graduate 's role is include leadership, research, practice, education, and
According to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (2015) the traditional roles of the advanced practice nurses include nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, nurse midwives and nurse anesthetists. Therefore, the impact of the research on the practice of the preparation of DNP nurse educator requires education in evidence-based practice, quality improvement, leadership, policy advocacy, informatics, and systems theory. Furthermore, transitioning to the DNP as a nurse educator does not change the current scope of practice of the Advance Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) for their current roles. The transition of the DNP better prepares APRNs by utilizing new models of the care delivery system and growing complexity of health
The role of the DNP is to be committed to one’s practice career, and be focused toward improving patient care and outcomes, as well as population health. The role of the PhD prepared nurse is to dedicate one’s practice to research which is focused toward developing new nursing knowledge and answering scientific inquiry (AACN, 2014). The DNP and PhD programs are both difficult and challenging, both are committed to research, one degree is not better than the other, both are terminal degrees (Baker, 2014).
The early portion of this course took us back in time when the concept of advance practice nurse started and how it has developed throughout these years. Learning about history of APN helped me understand the circumstances and original purposes of using nurses as primary care providers. Although health care has changed profoundly, the history proved that one thing has never changed, and that is nursing has been an important part of health care. There are many new innovations emerged in nursing: new technology, new evidence based practices, new policy, and so on. As a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP), I will be employing these changes when providing and improving patient care.
To reflect on the recommendation by the IOM and the consensus by American Association of Colleges of Nursing (ANCN) to elevate the educational level for the advanced practice nurses to increase patient healthcare quality, safety, and positive health outcomes are the DNP essentials with healthcare policy and competencies that are relevant to advocacy (Melnyk, 2013). According to Potempa (2011), the DNP essentials are relevant to DNP graduates, as well as the DNP students to be prepared to involve proactively in the healthcare policy preparations and implementation in all system levels. In addition, it prepares the DNP nurses to lead and provide a critical boundary between the research, policy, and practice (Melnyk, B. M. (2013). Therefore, the
Advanced nurse practitioners (ANP) can be found in a variety of settings. In the clinical setting, they are attending to children who have health care needs distinctly different than other age ranges, adults who are experiencing symptoms that can be addressed on the spot, and the elderly who have specific needs that require expertise in the area. Family nurse practitioners (FNP) are able to cover health care needs of the young, old, and in the ages between using efficient, effective, and professional strategies based on nursing guidelines, policies, and laws. Nursing services. Guidelines determine the course of action FNP. Policies are the principles that denote prudence. Nursing laws reflect the specialized care, skill, and expertise
As a child, I dreamt of having a career in a medical field. Throughout my late elementary and middle school years, I wanted to become a Pediatrician. I remember this one memory from when I was younger. I was at a local Pediatric office getting my yearly checkup done and thought about how I wanted to be like Dr. Hletko (my family’s Pediatric Doctor). He has been my doctor since I was born. Anytime I was sick, he would be there to diagnose the problems and prescribed me my antibiotics to get better. Not only did he help me get better, but he also helped so many sick kids get healthy and I aspired to be like him one day. As I got older and started high school, I changed my career choice and wanted to become a Nurse Practitioner (APRN). APRN’s
Nurse Practitioners (NPs) are advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) that are prepared beyond primary nursing education and trained to provide specialized care directly to patients (Christian, Dowder, & O’Neil, 2007). In practice since the development of the first NP program in 1965, these healthcare providers play a progressively significant role as primary care providers for millions of Americans nationwide (The American Association of Nurse Practitioners [AANP], 2015). NPs must hold advanced degrees and complete extensive acute and specialty care preparation to officially practice (2015). NPs have traditionally trained to achieve their Master’s in Nursing Science in order to apply and test in this examination (Kleinpell, Scanlon, Hibbert, Ganz, East, Fraser, Wong, & Beauchesne, 2014). However, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) has recommended a new standard: nurses must obtain their Doctoral degrees and practice as Doctors of Nursing Practice (DNP) instead of just obtaining the minimum Master’s degree and practice as NPs (2012). It is believed that the education of DNPs is more easily compared to the education of other healthcare providers (2015). It is
Although the American Association of Colleges of Nursing clearly defined the role of Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree in 2004, some confusion about the academic programs still exist. The role of both the DNP and PhD-prepared individuals is to improve the quality of health care and the health of population through the use of the best evidence when assisting them in making decisions about treatment options. Melnyk, B. M. (2013). According to the national leaders in major healthcare fields, mentioned a gap between research and practice and the importance to apply research findings and engage in evidence-based practice. In order to translate this knowledge, the clinician must understand the healthcare delivery in order to help narrow the research-to-practice gap and transform health care. DNP-prepared nurses are trained to reduce the research-to-practice gap. Because most nurse lack knowledge to critically appraise research studies and the skills to effectively implement evidence-based practice (EBP) in their clinical settings.
In its Position Statement on the Practice Doctorate in Nursing, American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN) recommended that the DNP should become the graduate degree for the current Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) roles of clinical nurse specialist, nurse anesthetist, nurse midwife, and nurse practitioner. Therefore, the DNP will be the educational requirement for APNs by 2015 and will coexist with PhD programs. Although PhD prepared nurses will continue to perform research and disseminate findings, DNP prepared nurses will apply and evaluate these findings in the clinical setting. In this manner, the two degrees work together to improve patient outcomes rather than threaten each other’s existence. Additionally, two terminal degree paths are expected to attract more students by offering the opportunity to focus on either clinical practice or research (AACN, 2011).
With the healthcare system continuing to advance, DNPs in clinical practice is expected to take on more significant roles in problem-solving and advocacy, as well as teaming up with other specialties and medical professionals. This increased responsibility comes with higher pay rates and opportunities for advancement, especially as existing DNP holders start to retire. According to the AACN, during the time year of 2015-2016, the number of students enrolled in DNP programs increased from 21,995 to 25,289, and the number of DNP graduates increased from 4,100 to 4,855. (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2015). The DNP degree prepares nurses to provide patient care at the highest level of education and practice. Programs have two entry
The healthcare profession is an ever evolving world that has changed greatly over the course of history in response to the needs of the communities and world at large. Gone are the days of doctors traveling to homes and communities near and far to provide a service. So much of the care provided now is driven by policies, legal agenda and financial impact. As a result of the changing dynamics within the healthcare industry, the roles of medical personnel have transformed into something once unfathomable. Nursing is a key area where significant changes have been observed over the last half century. Due to the ever increasing number of patients within the healthcare system and a physician pool that is not growing at the same rate, there has
The definitions of Advanced Practice Nursing have continued to be developed and defined in a variety of ways over time. The definition of APN had become critically essential more than ever as the significant increase in need of APN and the impact of APN’s part in healthcare environment. The definitions provided by the United States Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) DNP Essentials, the APRN consensus model and Hamric, Hanson, Tracy & O'Grady in textbook have similarities and distinctions.
The State of the Union speech was spoken very well by President Obama and has impacted me in many ways. The first thing that caught my attention was when Obama talked about the war in Iraq. As a six years veteran, I have seen a lot of my friends come back with extreme levels of mental and physical pain. Obama addressed that in nine years of the war, for the first time there is no military personnel fighting in Iraq. Another issue the President menschen about the war in the Middle East, was the death of Osama Bin Laden. The President told everyone that Osama Bin Laden is no longer a threat to the United Sates. Finding Bin Laden and being able to capture and kill him seem like an
“Advanced nursing practice is the deliberative diagnosis and treatment of a full range of human responses to actual or potential health problems.” (Calkin, 1984). Advanced nurse practitioners attempt to maximize the use of knowledge and skills and improve the delivery of nursing and health care services. The field of advanced nursing practice differs from basic practice as the former requires clinical specialization at the master’s level. At this level, nurses become expert practitioners whose work includes direct and indirect patient care. Direct patient care involves caring for patients and their families; this is the focus of my section on nurse clinicians. Indirect patient care includes work as an educator, researcher, and a
