In Hamlet by William Shakespeare, he ask us to examine how the obligation of love was misunderstood, this idea is shown by how characters respond,interpret and understand the events and circumstances surround the main characters throughout the play. I will be discussing the misunderstanding of relationships between Hamlet and his mother Gertrude, and the relationship between Ophelia and Polonius.

In Act 1,Scene 2 Hamlet is shown to not understand why his mother Gertrude would marry his uncle Claudius. Hamlet does not understanding her judgement in marriage so soon after the death of her previous husband of King Hamlet. While in madness Ophelia was only able to communicate with the other characters such as Claudius, Gertrude and Laertes through singing lines from songs. These songs were often descriptive of events which had occurred in previous scenes for example she references Hamlet rejecting her and her father's death. These songs were also the only time in the play where she actually expressed her thoughts and opinions and whilst in madness was the only time we are shown to see her without following orders of a male. As a result of the death of her father she was unable to cope with reality without order from her father and ended up dying from drowning in a river.

This plays shows that the theme of the obligation of love is often misunderstood is shown to be a key idea in the film. It is shown in several instances such as Polonius ordering Ophelia to breakup with Hamlet for her own safety and also when Gertrude convinces Hamlet not to go to Wittenberg because she wanted to have a complete family. Both Hamlet and Ophelia thought that they were being too strict on them. These misunderstanding in the play have shown to affect every main character within the
