Heroes all contain many different personal traits and backgrounds. A character named Odysseus from the Odyssey was a hero in many ways. Odysseus, King of Ithaca, along with his 3 ships of men were sent to fight in the Trojan War in Troy. Their objective was to save Helen after she was kidnapped. The war was a great success, but when they tried to get home the found themselves stuck at sea. Odysseus was a hero because he was a leader who steered his men out of trouble. He had great skills and was very intelligent. Odysseus is a king with great leadership. In the tale of The Odyssey, Odysseus awakens to Lord Alcinous' island. There, he experiences a gathering of women. The king's daughter, Nausicaa, was found in the gathering. Odysseus finds himself naked …show more content…
Despite the fact that he got them into a struggle, he put his uses his leadership and intelligence to get away. Odysseus and his team was caught in the cyclops' give in. The cyclops' name was Polyphemus and he was the child of Poseidon. As a giant rock was in the way, there was no chance they could move it without Polyphemus. Rather, Odysseus thought of an arrangement. He told the cyclops, "Cyclops, attempt some wine"(Homer, book 9, line 256). Making the cyclops alcoholic and as he fell a rest, Odysseus gouged his eye with a wooden lance. Despite the fact that a portion of his men kicked the bucket, they made it out of the buckle and proceeded with their trip. Odysseus demonstrated extraordinary courageous qualities, yet in the meantime demonstrates the attributes of a one of a kind person.
At the point when somebody's life involves death, you would wish to be a hero. In the play "12 Angry men," composed by Reginald Rose, is what happened. When someone is about to lose their own life, you wouldn’t want that person to face death if they were innocent. The play happens in the courthouse gathering room, where 12 Members of the jury are stuck in a room, on a sweltering summer day, and
In my eyes a hero is a person who shows courage, is humble, does not give up, and is someone everybody can relate to. The protagonist in “The Odyssey” by Homer, Odysseus is a hero because although he is emotional throughout the book and lets his emotions take over his actions, he displays immense courage and perseveres through his journey and hardships.
Since the cyclops’ vision is impaired, Odysseus “tied them silently together, twining/cords of willow from the ogre’s bed/then slung a man under each middle one/to ride there safely, shielded left and right/So three sheep could convey each man” (Homer 500). Odysseus possess the trait of cleverness which is demonstrated through his quick thinking and by only using using the resources available to free his men from Polyphemus’ grasp. He is a man to be revered because he uses his cunning skills to help others reach safety. Odysseus is also the last man to exit the cave because he puts their lives before his. He is also willing to take the responsibility and consequences of their actions. For example, if the cyclops were to notice him he would force his men escape and leave him behind to be devoured. Odysseus is a hero, for his willingness to put his companions’ lives before his own and use of his wits to save those around him.
A hero accepts who he is as an individual, but strives to change himself for the better. In the epic poem, The Odyssey, by Homer, the main character Odysseus is a valiant king who embarks on a life-changing voyage. While traveling from Troy back to his home in Ithaka, King Odysseus overcomes daunting obstacles, and in doing so discovers his place in the world. Odysseus is truly a heroic figure because he demonstrates courage, improves his character, and wins the support of the gods.
Joseph Campbell once said, “A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself.” True heroes are those who do something for others rather for themselves, Odysseus doesn’t exactly show this trait in The Odyssey. In The Odyssey, Odysseus along with his men try to go back home to Ithaca but due to Odysseus nature, only he actually returns alive. In Homer’s The Odyssey, Odysseus proves he is not a hero because he is arrogant, secretive, and unfaithful; resulting for readers to believe that every action has an consequence.
Odysseus’s escape from the Cyclops is one of great intelligence. A Cyclops is a giant one eyed monster. Homer said, “The booming voice and the very sight of the monster filled us with panic” (IX, 256). From the first moment Odysseus and his men set eyes on the Cyclops they know they are in trouble and will not be able to get out easily. The Cyclops, Polyphemus, eats two of Odysseus’ men from the start. As soon as this happens, Odysseus
Moreover, the ancient Greeks held intelligence in high regard; so Homer made the decision to make Odysseus capable of solving complex problems in a creative manner. This intelligence is quickly shown when Odysseus creates a plan for him and his men to escape the cyclops cage. The stone in front of the entrance was monumental in size; something Odysseus and his men could never move without extreme aid. Therefore, he decided to manipulate the cyclops with wine into a languorous state and blinded him with a flaming stake. When the cyclops, Polyphemus, awoke he immediately cried
Being a legitimate hero is not all about having the extraordinary supernatural powers commonly seen on television. Heroes are people who aid others, often putting themselves at risk to do so. They made the decision to fight, not necessarily physically, for their values. Odysseus, the main character in The Odyssey, should be considered a hero. He put his own life in jeopardy to protect his men from the supernatural threats that they faced throughout their journey. Odysseus should be regarded as a hero because he is brave, clever, and cautious.
Do you know anyone who wants to fight for ten years? One man was willing. He was a determined man who was willing to face a lot of challenges to return home. He was the great Odysseus. A hero is a person who is loyal, determined, and brave. Heroes are role models that anyone should look up to. Also, they will sacrifice themselves for something they think is important. Heroes are favored by others. Odysseus is an epic hero from Ithaca and has a wife named Penelope and a son named Telemachus. Odysseus was a Greek soldier and fought in a ten-year war called the Trojan War, which was fought outside the walls of a great city called Troy, and he was trying to get home for ten years. Throughout Odysseus’ journey, he shows many heroic and flawed traits. Although he had many flaws, he is a hero.
There are many different ways that a hero can be described or imagined. Everyone has their own ideas of what makes someone a hero. Also, for many heroes it is debatable whether they really are a hero. In The Odyssey by Homer, translated by Robert Fitzgerald, Odysseus is one such debatable hero. Odysseus is a hero because he is brave, level-headed, and he shows faithfulness and respect to important figures in his life.
A Hero is someone who is looked up to by people, does things people remember them by and does things for other people. By today’s standards, odysseus is a hero. The reason why odysseus is a hero is because he is looked up to by many people, and he has done many things people remember him by. Throughout Odysseus’s journey him and his men encountered many things for people to remember them by and look up to them.
He was often displayed with heroic qualities, facing each obstacle head on with little fear. However Odysseus was flawed, with emotional constraints of a human he often took risks just to please his pride, this lead to disasters that could have been avoided. An example of this occurred after blinding Polyphemus, Odysseus and his crew paddled off to sea but Odysseus could not leave without taunting his victory. He yelled out to the Cyclops, which made it even angrier. Polyphemus took a mountaintop and hurled it at Odysseus and his crew, nearly beaching them. In response to this Odysseus yelled, “Cyclops, if a mortal man inquire how you were put to shame and blinded, tell him Odysseus, raider if cities, took your eye: Laertes’ son, whose home’s on Ithaca!” (Page 13). Polyphemus then prayed to his father Poseidon dooming Odysseus to never be able to return home. Occasions like this showed Odysseus’s imperfections. But his bold fearless character was quite prevalent for an immense amount of the story. When talking to Polyphemus clever as he was he told him his name was nohbdy. As a result when the Cyclopes got stabbed in the eye he cried out, “nohbdy, nohbdy’s tricked me, nohbdy’s ruined me!” (Page 13) this did not alarm anyone to come and help him. By doing this Odysseus saved most of his crews lives and helped them return back to their ship safely, which showed a high amount of valor and also his

What makes a hero is determination, perseverance, and bravery to accomplish a goal. Odysseus embodied all of these traits in the epic The Odyssey written by Homer. Odysseus was the king of Ithaca and he left for the 10 year long Trojan war, leaving his whole kingdom behind to defeat the Trojans. After about 20 years he makes it home and takes back his kingdom.Throughout his journey he faced many perilous encounters. Odysseus is considered a hero worldwide.
Odysseus: a hero in every way. He is a real man, skilled in the sports, handy with a sword and spear, and a master of war strategy. Most of the challenges and adventures in his return voyage from Troy show us this even if we had no idea of his great heroic stature and accomplishments in the Trojan war. I found in my reading of the Odyssey that most of the trials the gods place upon him are readily faced with heroic means. These challenges are not
