Odysseus As A Hero

A hero is someone who has outstanding courage and recognized by others. In the Odyssey, Homer talks about the difficulties the character Odysseus faces on his way back home from Ithaca. Homer appropriately depicts Odysseus as an epic Greek hero because he is clever, wise, loyal and his helped by Athena throughout his difficulties. Odysseus drives his men by utilizing crucial cleverness instead of strength alone, so as to conquer the cyclops. Odysseus is trapped in a cave with the Cyclops who are keeping him there stuck. Odysseus eventually, the clever man he is, tells the cyclops his name is “Noman” and then puts a burning timber in front of them, eventually, making them go blind. Therefore, Odysseus deceives them and says, “ in my heart I laughed, my name, that clever notion, so deceived them… I was planning how it all might best be ordered that I might win escape from death both for my men and me… Then to to my mind this seemed the wisest way” (113). Using Odysseus's cleverness, he knows he needs to still get out of the cave. After all, Odysseus did what he had to do to escape even though if it meant to kill someone. As a clever Greek God he took one of the most valuable possessions that cyclops praise, that is, the rams. Odysseus and his men cling on to the bottom of it and wait for the cyclops to release the rams, Odysseus explains “furst from the beneath the ram I freed myself and then set free my comrades” (114).
