In Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey, Odysseus is the hero of the story. This essentially means that he has heroic and human traits. This includes weaknesses and strengths. Homer gives Odysseus heroic traits like intelligence and pride, but also some human traits such as stubbornness.
And although book nine is a perfect example of Odysseus using his skills, Homer actually directly states his clever behavior. “He has a scheme already in his mind- and what a man he was for schemes and battles.” (Book 14, l. 35-36) This explains his quick thinking, especially in all the tough situations the son of Laertes has been in throughout his epic journey home. No wonder he has the goddess of Athena by his side and in his favor.
Moving on from strengths, one

In the epic Odyssey, Odysseus has many defining characteristics. His most distinguishing traits are strength, courage, and confidence.
When people think of a hero, they think of a tall, handsome, loyal, brave, and a type of man that could do no wrong. The “hero” that is portrayed in the Odyssey is a man named Odysseus. This “hero” may be tall and handsome, but he is often arrogant, disrespectful, conceited, and rude. Odysseus consists of positive and negative characteristics that is shown in the text by Homer. These characteristics impact the characters day to day, or in the book’s case, the quests. In the Odyssey, Homer values the characteristics hospitality and cunning, but he objects bad leadership.
In homer's Odyssey the main character Odysseus is a person who only tries to help himself. Although he earns the trust of his men while in Troy, he loses it on his perilous journey home. Many times in the epic he manipulates others, commits foolish acts and is full of hubris. He tries to take shortcuts and as a result of this is men are killed and his boats destroyed. He plays with the lives of his men and he is punished for it. Odysseus is not a hero because, he is foolish, lacks faithfulness and is consumed by his Hubris and selfishness.
"If I play a hero or a good guy, I'll try to find his darkness or his flaws." -J. Kinnaman. (Brainyqoute.com) As Kinnaman mentioned, there are almost always flaws in a hero, and these defects usually make the story more interesting. (Knowing a protagonist's defects is helpful to follow the story, because they usually propel the tension the story.) (-- removed HTML --) , an ancient Greek epic poem written by Homer, the protagonist attracts readers by showing not only his heroic qualities but also his shortcomings. The poem is mainly about Odysseus, a victorious general of the Trojan War, going back to his beloved homeland Ithaca after the brutal battle. For generations, heroes have always fascinated people and people have strived to achieve certain qualities of their heroes. In Homer’s The Odyssey, Odysseus is considered the hero of the story. While Odysseus does demonstrate some qualities that are not heroic, he is still defined as a hero because of his better, more heroic qualities in which he is far superior in than any other man. The qualities in which define Odysseus as a hero are courage, intelligence, and leadership.
The epic, The Odyssey, centers around Odysseus, whose disposition can be controversial. Like all heroes, Odysseus displays both positive and negative characteristics, which determine whether he is a admirable figure or not. In my opinion, the parts of his character that are commendable outweigh his lesser qualities, making him an honorable role in the poem. Odysseus’s three main favorable attributes are his cleverness, his determination, and his leadership.
A Homeric epic hero is considered to be above a normal human being. The traits of a typical epic hero are strength, loyalty, courage, and intelligence. In fact, the Macmillan Dictionary for Students defines a hero as "one who is admired and looked up to for valor, achievements, and noble qualities" (483). Odysseus fulfills all of the requirements for an epic hero and more. He demonstrates his ability to be an articulate speaker, and his poise aids him on his journey. His endless curiosity has gotten him into dilemmas, while his superb displays of strength and cunningness have helped both him and his crew escape danger. His arrogance sets him back, but his loyalty is what drives him forward on his long and treacherous expedition. In the
Throughout the battle and the journey back to Ithaca, Odysseus faces many complications, and he is able to apply his bravery and intelligence to overcome the obstacles. To survive the deadly situations he comes across, he has to devise many solutions for the achievement of his goals and escape death. For instance, he faces a life-threatening obstacle during the Trojan War. The severity of the situation triggers him to come up with a strategy of the Trojan horse that allows him to succeed in the situation: “…they decided to resort to a trick thought of by Odysseus..." (12. 218). Another serious instance where he demonstrates his diligence during the journey was when he was trapped Cyclops' cave together with him men. His intelligence was revealed as he applied his leadership skills to unite the men to fight the common enemy by reminding them of how they had triumphed before by working together as a unit. To plan for a safe escape, he made a strategic more. "Friends, we're hardly strangers at meeting danger and this danger is no worse than what we faced when cyclops penned us up in his vaulted cave with crushing force! But even from there my courage, my presence of mind and tactics saved us all" (12. 226-230). This trick was influential in helping them reach the green island quickly and safely. The ability to plan

What characteristics should a powerful hero demonstrate? To me, a powerful hero is someone who is brave enough to make decisions that does not always benefit oneself but the people in their surroundings. In Homer’s epic poem “The Odyssey” Odysseus exhibits many heroic qualities. Although he made various mistakes, for example when Odysseus’ men died in the episode of “Scylla and Charybdis” Odysseus’ men died in a battle against the sea creature due to the fact that Odysseus forgot to remind his men of what was yet to come. Similarly, our modern day hero, Kobe Bryant, a recently retired professional NBA player for the Los Angeles Lakers, shows similar leadership qualities. He like Odysseus, he is determined and selflessness.
In greek mythology, a hero encounters many different types of challenges. In the novel, The Odyssey, the author Homer displays the heroic protagonist Odysseus as brave and confident. These heroic traits help Odysseus fight his internal thoughts and battle external problems, such as goddesses and other mythical creatures. Odysseus’s brave trait shines most when he encounters two goddesses. Wanting immoral love, Calypso, who is a nymph, keeps Odysseus on her island.
How does Odysseus’ traits pertain to modern-day heroes? What traits does Odysseus show in The Odyssey which makes a hero? Odysseus heads to go fight in the Trojan War. Winning the way, Odysseus starts his journey home. On the journey, he faces many disputes heading to Ithaca.
The epic poem The Odyssey, written by Homer, centers around the main protagonist Odysseus and his long journey back home. Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, returns home after defeating the Trojans in a ten year war. On his way back, he angers Poseidon, god of the sea, by blinding his son, Polyphemus the Cyclops. Due to Odysseus’ actions, Poseidon refuses to let Odysseus reach home, and Odysseus and his crew are forced to go through a series of obstacles throughout the epic. Through this adversity, Odysseus must show his heroic attributions in order to survive. Homer portrays Odysseus as a hero by giving him characteristics such as: craftiness, loyalty, and bravery.
Another case that defines Odysseus’ intelligence is when he defeats his wife’s suitors. When Odysseus was gone on his twenty year voyage, those that lived in Ithaca started to believe that he was dead but his wife, Penelope, thought he was still out there. The suitors want to take her hand in marriage, so she decides to have a strenuous final test to decide who will be worthy enough to be her new husband. This test is to see if any of the suitors have the ability to string Odysseus’ old bow and shoot twelve iron ax-helve sockets in a row. Before this, Odysseus sailed home and had flown under the radar as a

The hero of The Odyssey, Odysseus, although is not. Odysseus is a very unique hero because; he does not posses some of the same attributes that many other heroes’ have, for example, preference to strategy over power, devotion to family, and versatile leadership qualities over his men.
