Carl Linnaeus was born on May 23, 1701, in Småland, Sweden. Linnaeus adored plants, even at a young age. His father Niles, an amateur botanist, taught Linnaeus basic botany. Linnaeus primarily went to Uppsala University to study medicine, botany and he eventually wrote a thesis on plant sexual reproduction. Linnaeus then went to Lapland, and after six months he had discovered about 100 plants. He then set out for the Netherlands to get his doctoral degree at the University of Harderwijk. After that, on 1735, Linnaeus published his first edition of Systema Naturae, which fully introduced Linnaean taxonomy. Linnaean taxonomy was partially discovered before by Gaspard and Johann Bauhin 200 years ago, but Linnaeus was the first to use it consistently
“I am Laerte’s son, Odysseus./Men hold me/formidable for guile in peace and war” (Homer 488). It is evident that the author of the famous epic poem intended to portray the voyager, Odysseus, as a valiant and compassionate person. However, one may believe that he is a foolish man who delayed his own journey home. In the epic The Odyssey by Homer, the main character, Odysseus, is a hero because he always tries to keep his thoughts on home, he keeps his crew focused on the next task, and he is intelligent to win the gods’ favor. Odysseus is a hero because he never loses sight of his homeland during his tedious travels.
“Now shrugging off his rags the wiliest fighter of the islands leapt and stood on the broad door still, his own bow in his hand” (Homer 557). In epic poem The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus is a hero because he makes a clever decisions by gaining a close connection with Circe, he is cautious for he built his bed out of an olive tree, protecting his family from imposters, and he is cunning, for he allows his men to successfully escape Polyphemus’ cave.
Around the 1200 B.C., Odysseus was sailing the Mediterranean Sea for the purpose of reaching home. In his long narrative poem, The Odyssey, Homer conveys how Odysseus desperately wishes to go home to Ithaca. However, he faces brutal treatment and obstacles from several different antagonists, and more obstacles appear when he reaches home. Odysseus came across many external conflicts, which he dealt with intelligence, determination, and loyalty.
Although Odysseus is one of the most well known greek heros in the world, he is also very controversial among the people as well. In the book, “The Odyssey” written by Homer, Odysseus made some choices that makes the readers question his role as a leader. In “The Odyssey”, it tells the story about Odysseus’ long journey home from the Trojan War. Along the way, Odyssey has extended his times away from home by making unintelligent decisions that led him to encounter one disaster after another. Although Odysseus has some positive attributes, he is a poor leader for the following reasons: he is too cocky and overconfident, he make careless decision, and finally, he is very selfish.
Joseph Campbell once said, “A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself.” True heroes are those who do something for others rather for themselves, Odysseus doesn’t exactly show this trait in The Odyssey. In The Odyssey, Odysseus along with his men try to go back home to Ithaca but due to Odysseus nature, only he actually returns alive. In Homer’s The Odyssey, Odysseus proves he is not a hero because he is arrogant, secretive, and unfaithful; resulting for readers to believe that every action has an consequence.
Spider-Man is your average modern day hero, he is a citizen who was bitten by an unusual and peculiar spider which gave him powers and abilities such as being able to shoot webs out of his hands and climb walls without the need of any equipment. And Odysseus is a Greek hero who was strong, heavily favored by the gods, and could take down any and all challenges he´d ever have to face. And if you ever compared the two you would see that both characters are extremely different. Why you would see this is because we know that Spider-Man is a modern day hero, but can we consider Odysseus as one. My answer to this would be NO. Society today would not consider Odysseus as a modern day hero because of many reasons. One would be that he doesn´t show
In Greek literature of mythology, we have examined Odysseus. Students and scholars alike have held debates about Odysseus. The discussion is whether Odysseus was a true hero, as read in The Odyssey. There is abundant supportive evidence to verify all sides of the debate and opinions held about Odysseus. Odysseus had encompassed many qualities that I believe make him a hero. The qualities he embodied were mental strength, physical strength, and spiritual strength. I would like to advocate for why Odysseus was a hero.
“Are you flesh and blood, Odysseus, to endure more than a man can? Do you never tire? God, look at you, iron is what you’re made of” (12.162-164). In the epic poem, The Odyssey by Homer, the focus is on the journey of Odysseus, the island of Ithaca’s king, after he defeated the Trojans in a war that spanned ten years. He travels far and wide in an attempt to get home to his wife and son, but is repeatedly blocked from doing so by gods, nymphs, and monsters alike. He’s a skilled warrior that fears next to nothing and this poem follows him as he uses these facts to his advantage. Odysseus is persuasive and clever and refuses to shy away from a challenge that requires either one of these characteristics.
Throughout The Odyssey, the audience often feels sympathy for Odysseus and his men: our idealistic minds want to root for the long lost king to make it home to his true love and his kingdom. His return home takes priority in our minds, causing us to root for the fall of anyone and anything that may come in between him and his happy ending. At a closer glance, however, it seems that Homer does not want us to blindly root for the human adventurers. It may be his intention to reveal the humanity and redeeming qualities of the so-called monsters in the epic. In Book 12, lines 251 to 256 of his epic, Homer demonstrates this point with the following simile, describing sea monster, Skylla, capturing six of Odysseus’ men out of their ship:
Some people would like to have Odysseus as a father, however I’m not one of those people and I don’t understand why would anyone want a father like Odysseus, he not a good father nor a respectable husband, because a good husband won't sleep with two other demi-goddesses (Circe and Calypso), and he wasn’t put in that situation by accident, although polyphemus wanted to eat them as a leader he should've thought of the consequences before he took action, he had to keep in mind that he was poseidon’s son so instead of trying to run away he decided to become violent, so he did that to himself by blinding Poseidon’s son Polyphemus the Cyclops, which made Poseidon angry which caused a delay to his return home.
Some may believe a hero is a person who fights evil and saves people. In reality, it is more than than that. A hero is someone who fights for what they believe in, they are courageous, fight for the greater good, and above all, would sacrifice their life to save the lives of many. For example, in The Odyssey, a hotshot is shown in the life of Odysseus. While many believe Odysseus was a great figure and leader, he was far from that. He failed his crew, and for one reason only, he was not the chieftain his men needed.
Do you know anyone who wants to fight for ten years? One man was willing. He was a determined man who was willing to face a lot of challenges to return home. He was the great Odysseus. A hero is a person who is loyal, determined, and brave. Heroes are role models that anyone should look up to. Also, they will sacrifice themselves for something they think is important. Heroes are favored by others. Odysseus is an epic hero from Ithaca and has a wife named Penelope and a son named Telemachus. Odysseus was a Greek soldier and fought in a ten-year war called the Trojan War, which was fought outside the walls of a great city called Troy, and he was trying to get home for ten years. Throughout Odysseus’ journey, he shows many heroic and flawed traits. Although he had many flaws, he is a hero.
In Homer's The Odyssey, Odysseus shows time and again his heroic characteristics such as, courage, leadership, and cleverness that prove him and others to be a hero, even today. Odysseus’s goal is to return home to Ithaca after fighting in the Trojan War, but is forced to overcome obstacles set throughout his journey designed to make him fail. Odysseus uses his heroic traits to conquer these obstacles. The same traits that make Odysseus a hero are also present in many of the people who are labeled as heroes today. For example, Martin Luther King Jr., an undeniable hero, is courageous, a leader, and clever. Odysseus’s courage helps him to stay determined while he propels himself through bumps in his journeys on his way home.
According to the article “What Really Is A Hery, Anyway”, Arhur Ashe stated, “Heroes are people who transform compassion into heroic actions.” Heroes can be an ordinary person who helps you throughout life and can lead you on the best path of life. They can also be a special person who is there for you in the time of need. Odysseus is king of Ithaca and a man of honor to the Ithaca people . Odysseus goes on an journey but on his journey he tries to get back home , but on his journey home he cheated on his wife and didn’t care about any of his crew members that came with him. In result of the things Odysseus does he is not a modern day hero.
Each individual encounters people, monsters, and events throughout life that influence actions and decisions; impacts of influences are exhibited in both Odysseus life and my own. Influences establish strengths of character, which determine response to situations and emotions such as distress, exasperation, and pleasure; each character strength is distinct to an individual whether a hero from the battle of Troy or a student from a small town. Strengths of character assist in the process of overcoming obstacles that are a part of life each day as insignificant as being unable to pass an exam or as strenuous as embarking on an epic journey across miles of waterways and land to return home. Everyone will encounter influences and obstacles that
