When the British settlers arrived in America, in 1607, it was realized they did not have enough food or supplies necessary to survive. The settlers received help from the Native Americans and even though these people were essential for the survival of these foreigners, they were soon enslaved and killed. Many documents in American history have said every man is created equally, and mistreatment is not acceptable, but American actions throughout this time period do not reflect these ideas. These British natives had just been freed of the monarchy in their country, yet soon after their arrival, the settlers began to declare themselves the authority figures in America, leaving everyone else below them. Olaudah Equiano's The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano best exemplifies this idea through economic factors, the widely accepted inhumanity towards African Americans, and shows how documents written with these American ideals in mind only apply to the people of the same race and gender of whom these documents were written by. Thomas Jefferson did not believe in racial equality, and thought that blacks were intellectually inferior. However in one of the most important documents in American history is the Declaration of Independence written by Thomas Jefferson himself, he says ”We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by there creator...” Jefferson knew that his ownership of slaves contradicted his principles. What Jefferson wanted most was for slaves to one day be free, he wanted them to go back to Africa. He refused to grant freedom to his own slaves because of their significances to his wealth, but overall he condemned slavery.

The video titled Africans in America: The Terrible Transformation thoroughly reassesses the history of slavery. The documentary tells of how slavery was brought to America, and of the conditions under which these slaves were forced to live. The trade that began in Africa was not initially focused on trading humans, but rather on gold. Gradually, the British took control and started trafficking Africans to their colonies in America. The conditions slaves lived under changed drastically from the original conditions when they first arrived to America compared to years after the slave trade had been functioning. Throughout Jefferson’s notes, Jefferson goes on to explain that he understands that the very concept of slavery goes against his philosophy in which he instilled into the Declaration of Independence. As one of the father of our nation, we the people should expect our leaders to uphold certain standards when it comes to human rights of their vary nation. To quote our fathering document, the Declaration of Independence, “We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness…” This however, brings up the point on whether or not Jefferson viewed the African slaves as “all men.” In the excerpt from his notes, Jefferson discusses that he believes that slavery should not exist but he also believed that once a slave is free, he or she can no longer live in the same society as one who which they have slaved for.
They did no more work than the other people in the village did. Their clothing, housing, food and mannerisms were the same as the people who owned them. European influence started to affect slavery in Africa and it was now becoming an enterprise rather than a legal system for punishment. Traders would come to Africa selling goods to these people, who did not have access to these goods before, in exchange for slaves. These traders would bribe chiefs of tribes to go out and capture neighboring villagers in exchange for goods, encouraging the kidnapping and enslavement of fellow Africans. "When a trader wants slaves, he applies to a chief for them, and tempts him with his wares." This was all a part of the European Triangular Trade. Goods were brought to Africa in order to trade with the Africans. Slaves were then shipped to the Americas to produce more goods to be sent to Europe in order start the whole trade cycle again.

The first Africans brought in more or less as an experiment. Africans tended to share the same resistance to diseases that Europeans did, they were familiar with the types of farming and crops, and they tolerated the hot conditions well. Originally, it was a matter of a ship going to western Africa and attempting to capture or trade for enough slaves to fill their holds. As the trade increased, it was impossible for the Europeans to capture enough slaves on their own. They began to work with African agents, that tribal leaders captured prisoners from other tribes to sell to the Europeans. This became a big and efficient business, carrying millions to the west. As the Europeans set up colonies in America, they brought the plantation ideas with them, which led to the need for labor hence they tried to enslave the Native Americans to work in their mines and fields. America is like a small child that has still yet to learn the rules of its’ common house. Discovered in the late 1400’s, America has taken centuries to develop into the standing country it is today. The great nation has overcome much in the last 600 years. Among many things vanquished throughout time, slavery has arguably taken the most consideration amount of time to overcome. Slavery was introduced to the fresh ground of America, specifically Virginia, in 1619. European land owners used Africans for labor and eventually pleasure. Masters mistreated slaves and lacked respect for the African race because of their skin color. This was the beginning of the the long dispute of slavery and racism. Elizabeth Keckley, author of “Thirty Years a Slave”, tells the story of her life as a slave and the strengths and struggles of moving on from captivity. William Wells Brown begins “Clotel” with the brief story of how he escaped slavery. As the writing progresses, Brown tells the story of Clotel, one of the alleged children of Thomas Jefferson that lived in slavery for most her life. Both writings give insight of living in slavery during 19th century America, and the difficulty in a country that is in the middle of overcoming enslavement. To some degree, citizens of America still feel the shackles of past bondage today. In the late 1700’s, the Second Continental Congress met, announcing that the thirteen colonies were at war against Great Britain for independence. During this time, the
