“Once you start asking questions, innocence is gone,” a famous quote by Mary Astor, an American actress. This quote means that innocence is where you blindly believe what you have been told by others without questioning their answer. Innocence is also considered to be naive, not knowing a lot of things. Little kids are considered naive because they just go along with you, tell them and they don’t question what you have said to them. Innocence i would say is also kind of like trust, you have to trust someone not to question them or argue with them. Innocence is believing what you are told and not questioning why? or what? Innocence is physical, emotional and social, it all depends on the person. A person could be physically innocent and not know a lot of about the physical body or about physical activities. A person could be emotionally innocent, by not know how they feel and choosing to believe that their feeling are what other people tell them to be. Innocence cannot be regained because once you begin to question everything and everyone around you, that habit just stays and is hard to get rid of. Even though you may not say the …show more content…
Innocence is when you believe what you are told and ignorance is when you blatantly choose to avoid the truth of the situation. Innocence is not purposefully meant to be about not knowing things, it could be genuinely something a person doesn’t understand. Innocence is not the same for everyone, it depends on the person and who they are as a person and it is not good to be innocent and it is also not bad to be innocent. Everything depends on your personality, character, and surroundings. Innocence in daily lives is significantly different to innocence in a court/jail. Innocence is a court/jail could be a big deal such as a life or death situation and innocence in daily lives could be something extremely simple and not
While sex is an act of love and trust, a lot of people throw it around as though it were a football. Many people regret their first sexual encounter because of who they did it with or because they weren’t ready, but they continue to perform the act because they feel that since they already lost their innocence, there is no use in staying abstinent. However, just because one has had sex does not mean they have lost their innocence. Sex is an act of growing and learning, not of losing self-respect and innocence. Sex should be seen as a natural act of mankind that one should not be ashamed of; however, it really depends on who the person is and how they feel about themselves. Through the stories of The Epic of Gilgamesh, “Degradation in Erotic Life”, and “Sex”, the reader can see that the act of sexual intercourse will not cause a loss of innocence as long as one is confident in themselves.
Yes I believe you have to leave some of your innocence behind when you grow up. It doesn't matter the age you are and what the situation is. There are certain things that everyone learns at different times and some things you learn might make you feel guilty. If you might of did something wrong and you have to admit it, your innocence will be lost when you get asked that question. We think of innocent when we are not guilty for the situation, but if we are your innocence is no longer with you in a way. You will always be innocent and guilty at the same time you might have not done something then but you might later or the other way around.
The Fall from Innocence is the loss of one’s innocence, or purity as the result of maturity or newfound knowledge. Mason Cooley, an American aphorist, once said, “Innocence is thought charming because it offers many possibilities for exploitation.” It is very needless to say that innocence is a valuable shield to a person that keeps that person free from sinful acts and evil demeanors. John Knowles exploits the archetype of the Fall from Innocence to show Finny’s reaction
Innocence to many people can be defined as someone who has no guilt or shame and who is pure and uncorrupt. At times, this childhood like manner is loss for an abundance of reasons one can not control, whether it is because of a pain experienced off a struggle, or simply because one grows old and just experiences life with all its life changing moments. In my opinion, innocence is something that should be cherished as long as possible. Scars are sometimes left, imprinted deep into our skin, changing a person for good. In the book All Quiet in the Western Front, this could clearly be seen throughout the whole story about how these characters, Paul and his friends, go through many challenges that they did not expect,
Recommendation to the South Should the South leave the Union? Yes, the South should leave because the events of the 1850s are only making the disagreement on slavery worse. For example, some events that should convince the South to leave the Union are the Compromise of 1850, the Fugitive Slave Act, Uncle Tom's Cabin, the Brooks-Sumner Affair, and the John Brown's Raid on Harper's Ferry. One event why the South should leave the Union is because of the Compromise of 1850.
Innocence in life is always hard to keep and is usually not wanted back until it is too late. We are always in want of knowing more but when we finally reach that point of knowledge we finally realize that we have lost our innocence doing so. The theme of loss of innocence in this novel is well portrayed and is given many angles. The novel really shows the bad reality of losing one’s innocence to time and curiosity. Although it is all a part of growing up and maturing through living, I really do have to think back and make the conclusion that innocence is
Loss of innocence is when someone, sometime in there life suddenly realizes all the evil, pain, and suffering in the world. You can see lots of loss of innocence that Esperanza has throughout the book. For example at the beginning of the book in the chapter “Boys and Girls” Esperanza explains that the girls and the boys are so far apart that they live in separate worlds. In her words “The boys in their universe and we in ours.” At the beginning of the book she is so oblivious to the world, she thinks that the boys and girls live in different ones. Esperanza begins to lose her innocence in the chapter “Cathy Queen of Cats”, when Cathy tells Esperanza that she is going to have to move because of all the bad people moving to Mango Street directly after she had just moved in. This is when Espranza first started to realize that the world might not be as she first thought it was. She starts realizing that her world of candy corn and gumdrops might be worse than she thinks it is. Esperanza realizes that in Cathy's eyes she sees Mango Street is “getting bad” becuase of families like Esperanzas. In the chapter “Louie, His Cousin & His Other Cousin” Esperanza losses a little more of her innocence when she sees one of Louie’s cousins pull up in a stolen Cadillac and the cops book him. In the chapter “Marin”
Characters lose their innocence throughout American literature. What exactly does “losing their innocence” mean? Losing one’s innocence can be seen as a character maturing. A character may lose his/her innocence in ways including the viewing of a traumatic event, especially one that will scar his/her life forever. Losing one’s innocence can also be caused by losing one’s trust in someone whom he/she once trusted, catching a glimpse into the “real world”, or performing an act of immorality. The recurring theme of loss of innocence, as seen throughout American literature and reality, can affect a person and the people around him/her both negatively and positively. As a result, the audience can see the character mature through losing hope of dreams, becoming an outcast of society, gaining a new perspective of ideas, or gaining confidence. Negative and positive effects falling onto characters as a result of a loss of innocence can be found in works such as The Scarlet Letter, The Great Gatsby, To Kill a Mockingbird, Of Mice and Men, and The Hunger Games; this theme can also be seen in real life through the effects of children exposed to violent video games.
The first experience that Baby has which causes her loss of innocence is her first exposure to the
If innocence is not present in an individual it cannot be protected. An individual of this kind makes choices that effect how corrupt they can become. Dick Hickock had a loving family, who supported and loved him as he grew up. Even though he was in a nurturing environment that protected him from the corrupt society around him, he still became a criminal. This shows that innocence, if not present in the first place, cannot be salvaged. After passing “hot checks” he was put in jail where his jealousy of
Innocence is something that can only be lost once. Within both The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver and Brave New World by Aldous Huxley there are various characters that lose their innocence in very dramatic ways. A character can lose their innocence due to the death of someone else. They can also lose their innocence by just being looked at from a different perspective by others, this can be seen through the characters Bernard and Rachel. ADD ANOTHER TOPIC Someone who has lost their innocence changes their personality and perspective on life, which results in them acting in situations differently than they would before.
Holding onto Innocence is like trying to hold on to someone that is on the verge of passing, you can try your best and sometimes they do live but a lot of the time you can’t and losing the person changes you. Because you are hit with things that break your innocence and just growing up slowly makes you lose your innocence it makes it very hard to hold on to. For example “ Her hardest hue to hold” is trying to show that “gold “or innocence is the hardest characteristic to keep. In the outsiders Ponyboy tries his best to keep his innocence even if he doesn't show. When Johnny is on his deathbed he weakly says to ponyboy “Stay gold, Ponyboy. Stay gold…” and passed away. This left Ponyboy and would leave many others determined to keep his innocence and try not to get in trouble. Also when Johnny picked up a broken bottle to scare Soc’s away he picked it up and threw it away showing he still was still a kind hearted kid under all of the inadequate things he did. You are given innocence as a child, only some can hold on to
First in the novel Candide the neoclassical age defined innocence as ignorance and experience as knowledge. Meaning that when you are born you are a blank slate (innocent) but life will write on you (experience). If we examine the etymology of the character’s name “Candide” we learn that his name came from the Latin word “Canidum” meaning “white, pure, and honest” which implies innocence. From the beginning of Candide, we see how naïve and innocent the character is .He lives in the Barons castle with the nicest things, unaware of the outside world. Most of Candide’s ideas of what the outside world was like was from his mentor, pangloss whose philosophy is the best of all possible worlds. Until he is faced with real world problems such as hunger and human cruelty after he is kicked out of the castle. Candies first example of innocence is when he leaves the Barons Castle “Candide, ejected from the earthly paradise wandered for a long time without
All babies on Earth are born innocent as they have not yet been exposed to impure, sinful, or immoral events in life; they are likely to lose their innocence during some time in their life, and once innocence is lost it can not be regained. Elie Wiesel lost his innocence when he was fifteen years old during the Holocaust. He describes his journey in his memoir, Night. Although Elie survives the Holocaust, he never truly escapes it as his memories stay with him forever; his most vivid memories are to come from the events where Elie lost his innocence. Throughout the memoir, Elie mentions experiences that caused him to have a loss of innocence within his faith, dignity, and family loyalty.
Innocence is something that people lose as they grow older from childhood into adolescence and then into adulthood and get more exposed to new things as they grow up. Innocence is important in the novel because it was the one thing that Holden was trying to hold on to by trying to save another person’s innocence but is also trying to lose his own. There are situations where there would be a loss of innocence and would influence Holden because he is transitioning from different stages of his life. In a coming of age story, losing innocence is a sign of growing up and change. This is seen through characters that have effected Holden in a way, just like how Allie’s death showed him the harsh reality of life, and symbols like the record he
