Oprah: A Triumphant Individual Oprah Winfrey completely encompasses the cultural narrative of a triumphant individual. A cultural narrative is a socially transmitted narrative that is retold and evolved throughout history. Within these narratives are values and beliefs that are passed down throughout one’s life. A triumphant individual’s narrative is one of a self-made man or woman who demonstrates how conviction, determination, and risks can lead to success. Even if this is the case, the same effect is present. Her stories have already been heard and have impacted her viewer’s lives. So much so, that disagreement about her childhood does not affect her influence upon others. She still climbed to the top of the media world, she is still the Oprah Americans adore. Her rise from poverty is intensified, while the credibility of certain details of her poverty is downplayed.
Oprah was raised in several homes during her childhood, in account of her mother being an unwed teenager. She was raised by many, including her grandmother and possible father. When she was nine, and living in Milwaukee, Oprah was sexually abused by a cousin. After that, she was constantly abused by two other men. At the age of 14, she gave birth to a premature baby that died a month later.
The death of her baby boy seemed to ignite a fire underneath Oprah. Shortly after her son’s death, Oprah interest in the media career increased. At only nineteen, she became the youngest and the first African American woman to anchor Nashville’s WTVF-TV. After her debut, her career spiraled into a spur of promotions after promotions, eventually leading up to Oprah hosting her own television talk show. Oprah became a college student at Tennessee State University and began working part-time at a local radio station in Nashville as she continued to go to school and still working part-time at the radio station, she received an offer from a local TV station WTVF in Tennessee as an evening reporter/news anchor. This could not have been further from the truth, as Oprah was able to create her own format for excellence in all forms of media, not simply talk or television. Hattie laid the foundation of Oprah’s career when she taught her to read the Bible. At the age of three, Oprah spent hours reading Bible stories to the animals on the farm.
