Health complications in my youth and the frequent hospital trips from my vesicoureteral reflux that ensued showed me the fear that patients feel. This allows me to relate and understand what others are going through. This empathy will help me to maintain a desire to serve them, even when they are being difficult. It became my goal to become a physician and help patients like me to reduce the suffering and live healthier lives. This constantly motivates me and instills in me a desire to serve.

Through exploring other health care fields and shadowing osteopathic physicians, I have confirmed my aspiration to become a physician. A basic understanding and sincere interest in osteopathic medicine will allow me to be invested in my career and strive to be an outstanding osteopathic physician. By paying attention to patients sharing their current state, the physicians can gain a thorough understanding of the patients’ physical and mental well-being. From that, osteopathic physicians are then able to offer the correct treatments and propose lifestyle changes. My time conducting research at the UCLA Transplant Research and Education Center has vastly improved my active listening skills. By listening to patients talk about their thoughts and knowledge about transplant, I track their readiness for transplant. I also gauge their interest in various treatment options. This experience has made me comfortable working with a diverse set of patients across the country from different cultures and socioeconomic classes. In addition, I have been challenging myself to refine my Chinese and learn Spanish on my own to serve a larger patient base. A willingness and ability to serve any patient that asks for help will allow me to become a great osteopathic
