In the research of an african ostrich there are many well known facts, and facts that could not have been known by just looking at the animal. Many people think that the ostrich is just an awkward looking bird, but really it is one of the most unique. It has traits that are unlike any other birds, and it also has very saddening consequences of these very rare characteristics. The ostrich is not as popular as it used to be; nowadays its popularity is based on the ostrich as a whole, and not just on its feathers for clothing designs. The ostrich has interesting features split between the male and female, it has a very saddening background, it has very unique actions, the ostrich is also a farm animal in some cases, and it even has special abilities …show more content…
Edgar Williams has stated,“Without the need to keep its mass low for flying, it has evolved long muscular legs” (Williams). Since the ostrich does not use its wings, its legs have become the strongest part of its entire body. II. Ostriches used to be very popular to society back in the 1800’s through the 1900’s, and they were used for many different things such as: clothing, food, and for sport.
III. Ostriches act very different in many different circumstances; the women do their job and the men do theirs.
IV. As strange as it might be, the ostrich is a farm animal. “There are 3,000 ranchers growing around 300,000 ostriches in several states like Texas, California, Arizona, Indiana, and Illinois.” (Watson, “Ostrich Farming Grows in Popularity”) This was stated by Mac Young, the executive director of the American Ostrich Association; it shows that multiple ostriches are on farms, and that it is very common in some states.
It is even said by the national wildlife federation that “an ostrich drumstick weighs as much as 15 pounds. That’s like eating a whole turkey! But most people prefer ostrich steaks, roasts, or burgers.” (“Ostriches Odds and Ends”) This shows that ostriches are very big, and that their legs are very
The researchers presented New Caledonian crows with a bucket filled with some food in an attempt to document how they went about selecting tools. The bucket was placed in a well, and pieces of straight and hooked wire were placed before the birds.
The first way, people noticed the everyday things is that the government banned DDT, the pesticide that was used to kill insects, was killing the eagles food chain. For example, in the first passage in paragraph 4, it says that “while it did kill pests, DDT also got into the food chain and eagles ate contaminated fish and other pray.” And in another sentence it explains how DDT was also harming the eagles eggs, so it was harming their babies too. This example shows that
The only marsupials (pouched mammal) native to the United States is Didelphis virginiana, the Virginia opossum ("Read eBooks online | World Heritage Encyclopedia | Didelphis virginiana," n.d.). This marsupial, also known as the possum lives throughout Central and North America, from Costa Rica to Ontario, Canada ("ADW: Didelphis virginiana: INFORMATION," n.d.). The word, opossum, comes from Algonquian wapathemwa meaning "white animal" ("Read eBooks online | World Heritage Encyclopedia | Didelphis virginiana," n.d.). This marsupial has a sad life cycle, interesting evolution and a sad structure and function. Surprisingly, this marsupial is often hunted down for food supply
Full-grown Bald Eagles have wingspans up to seven feet. They fly up to 30 miles an hour and can dive at 100 miles an hour! Eagles feed primarily on fish, supplemented by waterfowl, and carrion. The Eagle is one of the biggest and the strongest and what could possibly be more American than that! The adult bald eagle is a striking dark brownish black bird with a white head and tail. Juvenile birds are a mottled brown with white blotches. They do not obtain the full distinctive
The semipalmated plover is also from the Order of the Charadriiformes and are also of least concern. These can swim short distances across small water channels or inlets during foraging while on migration. They can also run several steps while stopping, staring and quickly snatching its prey. Stops, stares, then quickly snatch its prey. They prey on insects, marine worms, crustaceans, and small mollusks in open sites near sub-arctic lakes, in and around marshes and rivers, inland on dry and gravel or sparsely vegetated sites. They breed during the months of March to June and is known to inhabit North and Central America as well as western Caribbean. The osprey are from the Order of Accipitriformes and are of least concern. Their size serve
Its name means swift or speedy thief they actually have feathers you might think of it as a giant chicken, but it's only about knee high to an adult human it's only three feet tall and six feet long. some scientist believe that birds are dinosaurs they both have wishbones and relative bones and have hollow bones, and they're both covered in feathers, the dinosaurs couldn't fly because they weighed too much. There's no evidence that they lived in packs they supposedly lived solitary, they to weapons to kill their prey as they used their single curved hind claws. But they also had their very sharp teeth and hands and its favorite lunch is the protoceratops, and they might have been warm-blooded like our mammals
The structure of “The Osage Firebird” is a narrative passage. In addition to this this text also uses chronological order an example of this is “Born in 1925” the author uses this to show how much time passes in the story. It also uses some cause and effect an example of this is “As a child, Betty Marie Tallchief listened for hours to her grandmother’s stories of fire spirits and animals that could talk.” This is the cause and the effect. “She never forgot the tales, or the pride, that she learned at her grandmother’s feet.” She took pride in her heritage.
Ringneck Pheasants only weigh two to three pounds. The females are very blandly colored in order to blend in, but the males have browns, yellows, oranges, and sometimes a dark green. The ring around a Male ringnecks’ neck is a pure white like the spots on their wings, although their long tails are dark colored. They are considered the most commonly identified
Number Eleven: They Have a Lot of Feathers. Obviously, with such long wings and large bodies, you would expect an eagle to come with plenty of feathers. But you might not guess that they have a total of 7,000.
Osprey are equipped with the best of nature's fishing abilities. They have strong wings, long legs, reversible outer toes, spicules, and long claws. All of which aid in the catching of fish.
Prior to the 1990’s the golden eagle didn’t exist on the channel islands probably because of the existence of the bald eagle on the islands ( they competed on the same habitats). The bald eagle prevented the golden eagle from nesting on the channel islands and unintentionally saved the lives of the island foxes. In the 1960s the pesticide DDT was introduced into farming and contaminated the fish that the bald eagle was feeding on, between the 1960’s to the 1990s bald eagles became endangered because of the pesticide. Bald eagles came to consume DDT because of how carelessly the humans used the pesticide, as a result the population of the Bald Eagle dropped dramatically. Ranchers from the mainland started bringing sheep and feral pigs to the
Barn Owls Appearance Tyto tiabla, commonly known as barn owls, have heart-shaped faces with low profile bodies. They are typically 34 centimeters wide by 40 centimeters high, and weigh about 570 grams. Barn owls are bilaterally symmetrical, meaning the left side and right side of the body is equivalent if divided in half. They have very sharp talons and large wing spans. When combined with their short tails, barn owls have a unique, floating flying style.
Red-tailed hawks average between 48 to 65 centimeters in length. There wingspan is approximately 4 feet,or 122 centimeters. There is sexual dimorphism in size, females are 25% larger than males. This kind of sexual dimorphism, where females are larger than males are common in birds of prey. Wow! That is pretty amazing.
The ridges that run down an alligators back are made of individual bones called scutes that collect sunlight and transfer the energy directly to the animal's bloodstream.
A bird 's breastbone, or sternum, is shaped like a keel to attach the powerful wing muscles. The bones of a bird 's wings are surprisingly small compared to the size of the wing. All the bones and muscles of the wing are in the front and covered with feathers that protect and streamline the wing. The actual flight feathers are attached to the wing within little pits in the bones.
