Marriage and friendship are shaped by boundaries and expectations. Throughout Othello, there is disturbances or problems that interrupt the rules and expectations of relationship which also affects how the play progressed. Since most of the play is taken place in a battle field instead of a domestic setting, it created an environment that does not fit with traditional setting of relationships and marriages. In Othello, there are two types of marriage that are established “the dynastic or lineal marriage and the “companionate” or affective marriage.” (Tvordi para 3). Both marriages can be traced back to different religions and can be based off a legal contract. Othello and Desdemona’s marriage displayed the non-lineal marriage, where it crossed the lines of class and race and brought up the “anxieties about the disruption of the dynastic line” (Tvordi para 5). It brought up the fear of that Othello and Desdemona will cross the boundaries of races and have biracial children. Othello and Desdemona does not seem to be in love or lust with each other. Even when they were explaining why they were in love with each other, it can only be described as admiration and pity. Desdemona’s father, the senator, also mentioned that Othello only wanted the idea of Desdemona and does not actually love her.
