Overcoming Obstacles

Learning to deal with and overcoming adversity is what made me who I am. Every challenge and every difficulty I’ve successfully confronted in my life served as a way to strengthen my will, confidence and ability to conquer future obstacles. A famous quote I liked came from Herodotus, the Greek philosopher, who said, "Adversity has the effect of drawing out strength and qualities of a man that would have lain dormant in its absence.” When I responded positively and constructively to my biggest challenges, the qualities of strength, courage, character and perseverance emerged from deep within, because I am human, it was very easy to get caught up in the self-pity, unfairness of life, or the “why me?” trap. When I did think like that, I learned that I failed to recognize the opportunities for wisdom and growth that accompanied adversity. However, as soon as I allowed myself to think more clearly, I was able to let go of self-defeating and unproductive thoughts and get down to the business of dealing with what was happening before me and what can happen for me in my future. My failures and setbacks have nothing to do with me being a menace to society instead I had to realize it’s something every human being goes through. It’s a part of life and has everything to do with being human. Circumstances to me now mean nothing. Limitations don’t hold me back.

Life is full of obstacles and everyone goes through different problems. There are two possible outcomes to every problem: one is success and the other is failure. Often times, people face failure and just give up on that challenge. Others use that failure and work hard to reach success. As for me, I did face failure but that did not stop me from climbing over obstacles and persevering in the face of challenge and adversity.

Hardships have the power to make a break a person, as Roman poet, Horace, once said, “Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant”. Everyone has or will have to face adversity at some point in their lives, it is a universal truth. Although misfortunes usually have a negative connotation, depending on the struggle and how one deals with it, it is likely the person will come out of misfortune better prepared for the world. Contrastly, if a person never experienced any hardships, they would lack a sophisticated understanding of the world and lack the ability to handle difficult situations. Adversity gives people strength they can not obtain with success.

The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?

The late psychiatrist Elizabeth Kubler-Ross said: “The most beautiful people I’ve known are those who have known trials, have known struggles, have known loss, and have found their way out of the depths.” This inspirational quote suggests that adversity provides people with new opportunities and can drive people to improve their life. Adversity comes in numerous forms, such as emotional, physical, and financial. Individuals have a choice to learn from adversity or allow it to break their character. However, certain types of adversity, such as severe chronic conditions or diseases, do little to improve character and the human condition. There are many things that can hold people back from goals that they are determined to accomplish. Despite these hardships and dilemmas that we face, if we have fight in us and the correct work ethic we are bound to succeed. I personally have faced my share of obstacles in my life and have been through plenty of hardships. However, I always overcome them in one way or another. For example, when I first walked the halls of Harlingen High School I entered as a shy but ambitions freshman with a lot of friends and unfortunately a lot of enemies. I was always put down due to play playing ability in band. I constantly tried to get better and better and that’s when freshman region auditions came along. Additionally, he also developed a deep talent for public speaking, as his “I Had a Dream” speech shook the nation during his legacy and it still does, even today. Even despite his struggle with adversity, Martin Luther King Jr. is a figure who was able to overcome his hardships and it was because of these hardships that sparked a truly incredible leader. In addition to Martin Luther King Jr., scientist Isaac Newton endured many hardships as well. As a child, Newton never did particularly well in school and he also was often teased and bullied. For anyone this is difficult, but instead of retaliating physically to these bullies, Newton decided to outperform them in school.

It was Benjamin Franklin who said, “Out of adversity comes opportunity.” An opportunity for one to develop, grow, and for one's great abilities to be showcased. I concur with Horace Mann, in that facing adversity allows individuals to flourish and achieve success, as compared to prosperous situations where one’s capabilities may be hidden.

THE well one more obstacle i became over was to become good at wrestling and i actually started practicing and my coach believe me and one my last tournament i got second place in my tournament and they were all proud of me How i overcame my obstacles was i just kept doing what i needed to do to become successful and i didn't do it by myself i had many people to help me friends family and sometimes people that i don't know and i just never stopped when i was tired or was done with it but people showed me that never give up on your dreams and i just thought of what the prize at the end of the road would give me and it gave me stuff that will help me in life Well one obstacle was that i had to bring up some of my grades and if any of my friends

A grieving widow and mother finds out she has cancer. She worries about her family and who will take care of them. She wonders how she will pay for her medical expenses. Above all else, she wonders how this adversity fits into her life. The word “adversity” has a negative connotation when in many circumstances adversity gives rise to experiences that can change a person’s life and character for the better. The Roman Poet Horace once said “Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant.” His words are proven time and time again through the many challenges that life throws at a person. Different types of challenges, including physical and mental adversity, give way to amazing strength and courage and open the door to new opportunities.

All in all, life is comprised of challenges, experiences and achievements; all of which are the foundation that in essence construct one’s path to success. In my lifetime I have experienced tough and difficult challenges. At times these challenges became unbearable and made me feel like the odds were against me which might have been reflected in my grades. However, all these adversities, troubles, hard times, or problems I experienced are the backbone of my success as a human being and have built me into the strong, tenacious woman I am today. I have used these misfortunes as building blocks on my road to character development. I have been wrenched out of my comfort zone, sometimes with no solid ground to stand on, which has led me to make some much-needed changes in my life. Obstacles and barriers are in our everyday life. But it is what we do and how we react that helps us grow. Some are small causing short disarray while others might change a person’s life. In my short seventeen years, I have found the most difficult obstacle I have had to encounter was my parents divorce. I was mere 10 years old when my parents separated. It definitely took a toll on me. Often times I felt cold, alone, and broken. My mother scooped me up and put me back together. One obstacle that I have had to overcome in my life, is being African American. Unfortunately, in today's world African Americans are still disrespected and stereotyped just because of the color of their skin. Personally, I choose to ignore the stereotypes because of the fact that I know that I am better than that. Instead of being focused on how others may characterize me I focus on who I am, and continue to do the things that make me unique. Due to the fact that I focus my attention on academics and sports, I was awarded the Dome award by the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) for being an African American that excels in both sports and academics.
