Currently, in the pet market, a very prominent issue is present. Should private citizens be legally allowed to own exotic pets? Owning exotic pets is dangerous, expensive, and cruel. The average human should not be allowed to own exotic pets. In the first place, owning an exotic pet can be a risk to your safety. The size of the animal does not determine how dangerous it is. In the article “ Do You Really Want A Baby Tiger?” the author Mia Lewis states “It's not just big cats, poisonous snakes and chimpanzees that can be harmful- even smaller exotic pets can cause serious injuries.” How dangerous exotic pets can be is just another reason why they should not be owned by private citizens.
Along with being dangerous, exotic pets are also very expensive. Buying exotic pets is costly enough, but they also require a great deal of money to maintain. A strong, large, sturdy habitat must be built for the animal along with buying large amounts of food. On page 7, paragraph 3, Lewis states “ If keeping a dog can be time consuming and costly, that's nothing compared to a adult lion or chimpanzee.” Aside from the cost of keeping a exotic pet, they need lots of of time and frequent attention that most people simply don’t have. The average civilian does not have the time or resources required to humanely keep a exotic pet. Although most exotic animals are bought and sold while they are young eventually they will mature and become very large. Many people end up releasing their exotic animals when they become full grown because they become incapable of caring for the animal. If the animals are kept, they are often kept in cruel cages where they are neglected. Mia Lewis states “ In this environment they have no opportunity to practice most of their natural behaviors.” (pg 7 p 3). Exotic animals are not able to freely hunt and breed when kept in cages.
